For those who don’t know, I am apart of my student union at my university. It was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made in my university career. I’ve met so many new friends, and have had so many tremendous opportunities to meet and network with industry professionals. This past Thursday was one of our biggest events for CMNSU. For the past few months, our events team has been hard at work planning this formal with IATSU, another student union in our university. We finally saw it come to life on Thursday in downtown Vancouver, where we all went back in time, and partied like Gatsby! Also, the following pictures weren’t taken by me, so I would like to give credit to my friends (Sheryl, Rachel, Natalie and whoever the camera person was hehe) for taking so many pictures! I had such a hard time choosing which ones to post.
The reception began at 6pm. While we waited for the doors to the ballroom to open, us girls definitely took the opportunity to take as many pictures as possible, here is one of them! Everyone looked so pretty that night.
Here is the last picture we took while waiting to get into the ballroom. Once the doors opened, it was the funniest thing ever.. everyone ran frantically, screaming, and laughing hysterically to claim seats. There was no assigned seating, it was just first-come, first-served. It reminded me of a Black Friday sale where the staff open the doors, and everyone runs in frantically for no reason, just for the thrill and because every other person is doing it. After opening remarks from CMNSU and IATSU, dinner was served! Everyone was so hungry, our table asked the servers for extra bread.
What do girls do when waiting for food to arrive? Chat & take #selfies! I will probably include a food review of the hotel’s food in a separate post, but basically, it was a 3 course meal. Everyone had tomato/basil soup and a berry custard for dessert, but for the main course, you could choose between salmon, chicken, or a vegetarian option.
There was also a mini bar outside the ballroom. There was a featured drink called the “notorious”, it was so good! I forgot exactly, but I know it had alize, peach snapps, pineapple juice, and orange juice. So yes, it was very very girly and fruity but it was also so good!
At the end of the dinner, we had a illusion/magic show from the guy in the middle. He was SO GOOD, he left everyone in shock with his tricks. A basketball came out of his notepad, for crying out loud…like WHAT? How did he do that?! He also had a great sense of humour!
While the dance floor was on, we also had a photobooth. All the props were made by our event coordinator, they were so pretty and professional looking! Here is one of the pictures from our photobooth.
A few of us from the team stayed around a bit after the event was over. One of my friends decided to not use the coat check, and ended up losing his jacket so we spent quite a bit of time with our phone flashlights looking for his jacket. It ended up being stashed behind the stage in a tiny black ball, lesson learned kids, use the coat check! I also took some of the balloons home with me just because. Hey, I liked the colour arrangement okay!
Overall, I had a great night with my CMNSU family, plus other lovely people. It’s truly amazing and makes me happy to be able to work so hard on our events and initiatives, but be able to be such a close group of friends that love to have fun as well. Hard work definitely pays off. I used to be the typical commuter student, didn’t bother to get involved in anything but honestly, I have no regrets in getting involved. I’ve grown and learned so much, both professionally and personally and I’m proud to call these people my friends.
