Curiously Carmen

Do Chay

March 21, 2020

Disclaimer: In light of COVID-19, I just wanted to say that I am doing my part and social distancing. Luckily, I have some drafts saved up before this whole craziness began so please don’t attack me for posting restaurant visits before this began.

I know that you may want to go out and have fun, but it is crucial that we distance ourselves to slow the spread of the virus and flatten the curve before it gets worse. Yes, you may feel fine but you could be passing on the virus to someone who is immunocompromised or elderly that may not survive this virus.

Do Chay is a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant that has been on my radar ever since it opened last summer. While looking for a place to have dinner with Avocado before this whole COVID-19 fiasco, I suggested this place because she is my buddy for trying vegetarian/vegan restaurants with!

Do Chay is the sister restaurant of House Special in Yaletown. I remember reading that the owners of Do Chay had another Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver, but didn’t realize it was House Special. Tbh, if I knew it was House Special, I would have been less inclined to visit because House Special was disappointing.

Anyways, Avocado and I totally underestimated the atmosphere in here. We both thought, for some reason, that it would be a low-key, casual family-owned style restaurant. When we walked in, it was quite bougie and hipster. But after I found out that they were the same owners as House Special, it made more sense.

Ginger lemonade soda: I wasn’t going to order this, but it looked really good when I saw the bartender make it for another table. The selling point to me was how I saw her freshly squeezing lemons into the drink. The drink was really good if you like ginger-y things like I do!

Black truffle tofu: I was sold when I saw this on the menu as I am a huge fan of truffle! However, we both found this dish pretty disappointing and our least favourite of the evening.

We were under the impression that it would contain truffle oil to give it that wonderful truffle aroma, but it didn’t. The tofu was just your ordinary deep fried tofu with soya sauce, and not worth $8.

I would skip this because the other dishes were a lot better, as you’ll find out.

Coconut rice cakes: The coconut rice cakes were unlike anything I’ve had before. They were made with coconut milk and lightly pan fried. Usually rice cakes are chewy and dense, however the coconut rice cakes were slightly crispy on the inside, and creamy in the middle with a fragrant coconut taste.

To elevate the dish even more, the coconut rice cakes came with an ‘ish sauce’ which is a vegan fish sauce. The ‘ish sauce went perfectly with the coconut rice cakes and I found myself savouring every bite of this.

These are a must try because I’m not sure where else you could get these!

Satay noodles: The noodles came with a spicy peanut and sesame satay broth. Since the dish is called ‘satay noodles’, it could be interpreted as a stir fry but that was not the case.

It was very saucy, warming, and filling. The noodles soaked up the delicious broth.

Curry bowl: The rice curry bowl was warming and delicious as well. There was a very mild spice to it and was quite creamy. I loved the addition of the deep fried curly yam strings on the top! It gave the curry more excitement and some fun texture.

Overall, we left very satisfied with Do Chay with the exception of one dish. The food here is made with quality and care, and you can really taste it. Compare to Chau Veggie Express which is another vegan/vegetarian Vietnamese place nearby, Avocado and I both liked Do Chay more as we found the dishes more innovative and had richer, deeper flavour.

Do Chay is on the pricier side so I don’t see myself coming regularly, but it’s a great spot for something different and/or if you’re a vegetarian or vegan. Definitely don’t miss out on the coconut rice cakes!

Ricky’s Cafe

March 18, 2020

Disclaimer: In light of COVID-19, I just wanted to say that I am doing my part as a responsible person and social distancing. Luckily, I have some drafts saved up before this whole craziness began so please don’t attack me for posting.

I know that you may want to go out and have fun, but it is crucial that we distance ourselves to slow the spread of the virus and flatten the curve before it gets worse. Yes, you may feel fine but you could be passing on the virus to someone who is immunocompromised or elderly that may not survive this virus.

I have not gone out to a restaurant/done non-essential activities outside, since public health officials have urged social distancing. I am taking COVID-19/coronavirus very seriously as should you.

Back in January, some of my coworkers and I found ourselves at Ricky’s at Brentwood SOLO. Many years have passed since I’ve been to Ricky’s. If we are talking about chain breakfast diners, I much prefer IHOP but Ricky’s was more convenient for us.

This Ricky’s location was relatively new, and clean. I remember the Ricky’s I went to a long time ago was quite dark, dingy and in need of a face lift but was relieved to see this was not the case.

I actually found out through writing this post that there are three restaurant’s owned by The Ricky’s Group: Ricky’s All Day Grill, Ricky’s Country Restaurant, Ricky’s Cafe.

Strawberry lemonade: The strawberry lemonade was delicious. You were allowed to get one extra refill. I like my lemonade quite sweet, so this hit the spot perfectly.

The Works Omelette: After being very indecisive, I picked The Works omelette which came with ham, mushroom, cheese, peppers, and onions. The omelette was ginormous and very filling.

Taste wise, it was meh… nothing special. I appreciated that it was stuffed full with ingredients though. The pancakes were a bit bland but was quickly saved by syrup.

Chicken and avocado omelette: My coworker went with an omelette as well, but the chicken and avocado one. Instead of pancakes, he went with toast and stuffed hashbrowns. The hashbrowns was stuffed with sour cream, cheese, and bacon. Very hearty and filling!

Mediterranean omelette: Seems like omelettes were quite popular that morning! My other coworker ordered the Mediterranean omelette, which came with feta cheese, spinach, and tomato.

Overall, I found Ricky’s to be meh. Definitely not a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice… if we are talking chain breakfast restaurants, I would pick IHOP, DeDutch, White Spot before Ricky’s.

Pizza Pizza

March 14, 2020

Pizza Pizza is a Toronto based pizza chain that first opened in BC in 2018. Since then, Pizza Pizza has opened more shops in BC and I finally tried it!

To be honest, I remember reading many really awful reviews of Pizza Pizza when they announced that they were coming to BC. The reviews turned me off so I never bothered to try it. I only stumbled upon this place because Lager and Sangria ordered pizza for us here after a night of doing their wedding prep!

At the time, there was a really good deal. Two large pizzas, two Cineplex movie tickets, and 4 cans of soft drink for $30!

Meat supreme: What kind of pizza night is it without a meat lovers pizza? (No offense to the vegans out there. I’ve actually had pretty good vegan pizza at Virtuous Pie, and Vegan Pizza House).

There was a lot of meat and gooey cheese. The dough was thick with a slight chew, which is my ideal type of pizza. There was some sort of herb seasoning on top which made the pizza even better!

Anyways, I was really surprised considering all the negative reviews I read about Pizza Pizza. The pizza was actually really good for fast food pizza!

Bacon chicken mushroom melt: Yes, this pizza was as good as it sounded. Bacon, chicken breast, mushroom, cheese, with a creamy garlic sauce.

The garlic sauce was delicious and went really well with the chicken, bacon, and mushroom. There was a very generous amount of toppings on this pizza as well.

For “fast food” pizza, here is my rating starting from best to worst: Panago Pizza > Pizza Hut > Pizza Pizza > Uncle Fatihs > Papa John’s > Little Caesars > Domino’s.

Pizza Pizza has easily climbed to one of my top favs for “fast food” pizza. Obviously this is no craft, authentic pizza but it hits the spot for a greasy pizza craving.

Riverway Clubhouse

March 12, 2020

Riverway Clubhouse is inconspicuously tucked away behind SW Marine Drive, almost by the Fraser River. They are owned by the City of Burnaby just like their sister restaurant, Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse.

We have been to Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse many times but my mom wanted to try Riverway Clubhouse this time, so off we went!

Riverway Clubhouse has a slightly upscale feel to it. The theme is modern and rustic, with very high ceilings. It would be really nice in the summer because the floor to ceiling windows overlook the golf course pond!

This place is also quite popular for weddings and fills up quickly! 😉

Clam chowder: My parents chose the three course menu for $35. My mom had no complaints with the clam chowder or garlic bread that came with it.

Prawn salad: My dad chose the salad for his first course. The veggies were very fresh! In addition, the prawns were crunchy and fresh with a sweet chili glaze on top.

Steak and lobster: My parents both ordered the steak and lobster for their main course. The steak could have used a bit more seasoning but the lobster was good!

Chicken strips: What kind of person orders chicken strips at a nice restaurant? Apparently this food blogger.. sue me! Chicken strips are life!

My chicken strips were amazing and I had no regrets. They came out piping hot and were very juicy. I was impressed that it came with 5 pieces! I ended up taking half of it home w fried for lunch the next day because it was quite big.

Fish and chips: The fiance enjoyed his fish and chips as well! The pieces of fish were fat and juicy. I find that sometimes with fish and chips, it is just a giant air pocket that makes the fish look big. Am I making sense?

Dessert: The dessert was an AYCE chocolate fountain with different items such as bananas, marshmallows, melon, apples, cookies, oranges, etc. It was fun to go up to the chocolate fountain and choose desserts. There was also some mini donuts and pastries too! Other tables had kids and they really enjoyed going up to the chocolate fountain.

Service was attentive and the atmosphere was calm and peaceful. They were playing Charlie Chaplin videos on loop the whole night which was entertaining!

If you’re looking for a quiet but nicer place to go away from the city, I would recommend Riverway!

Kurumba Restaurant

February 14, 2020

While on the topic of authentic Sri Lakan food one evening, Lager suggested that we try out Kurumba in Port Moody. Sri Lakan food is not widely found in Metro Vancouver and Kurumba is the most authentic place in Lager’s opinion. So, a bunch of us trekked out to Port Moody and tried Sri Lankan food for the first time!

Kurumba is located in a small strip mall in Port Moody. Port Moody is a pretty sleepy town (city?) with not much going on. I find it easily missed on the way to Coquitlam. Anyways, we made a reservation but we ended up being one of the few tables that night so it wasn’t really necessary, we just played it safe since there was a group of 10.

Although Kurumba is the most authentic Sri Lankan restaurant around, they also had other Asian cuisines such as Thai and Chinese. Apparently the owner is Chinese, but lived in Sri Lanka for awhile.

One thing Lager warned us about was that Sri Lankan food tends to be quite spicy. And indeed, it was! If you’re not a fan of spice, you would find your menu very limited.

Roti canai: We started off with a plain roti, which came with a side of curry dip. The roti was delicious, meanwhile the curry dip was very spicy. Since most of our dishes were spicy, I opted out of the dip and ate the roti plain.

Sri Lankan chicken curry: The braised chicken was incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavour. It was a very hearty and warming dish. The dish was served bone in, which made it more difficult to eat but wasn’t a huge issue.

Dhal yellow curry: This was a lentil curry, which had the texture of porridge or stew. The flavour was quite plain but enjoyable, and good to cool our mouths down from the other dishes. Apparently this lentil curry is served to toddlers or young kids, because it is one of the few Sri Lankan dishes to not be spicy. It brought back childhood memories for Lager.

Sri Lankan beef curry: The beef curry packed a ton of heat! It was delicious although our faces and mouths were heating up. The beef was braised and served in cubes.

Sri Lankan chili fish: The chili fish came wok fried, similar to Chinese style. The fish was quite spicy and I found it to have more of a tangy spice compared to the other dishes.

Sri Lankan chili prawns: The prawn came in a similar spice as the chili fish. We found it manageable to eat 1 prawn at a time to contain the burning spice.

Kotthu roti: Perhaps my favourite discovery of the night! It is similar to a chow mein or stir fry. But instead of noodles, they use shreds of chopped roti bread! It was incredibly full of flavour and had lots of ‘wok hei’. I loved the texture of the roti too. We ordered both a chicken and beef kotthu roti.

Yellow basmathi rice: A savoury Sri Lankan coconut rice cooked in herbs. I found it delicious and went well with the curry. Although it said coconut, I couldn’t taste any coconut flavours to it.

Ginger beef: This wasn’t a Sri Lankan dish, but Zucchini loves his ginger beef and it is hard to find in other restaurants. As mentioned above, Kurumba also had Chinese and Thai dishes so this was one of the Chinese ones.

Sri Lankan hot buttered calamari: The calamari were a fresh and crunchy delight! The calamari batter itself was not spicy, but it was topped off with some chili sauce that gave it some heat. Even though it was called ‘buttered’ calamari, I didn’t taste any butter.

Sri Lankan fried rice: Last but not least, fried rice! The fried rice was tasty and not super oily. Compared to Chinese style fried rice, I would say this had more of a savoury taste to it.

It was a fun night discovering new foods that I normally wouldn’t know to order myself! Thanks Lager for introducing us to the food of your country.

If you’re looking for a new or different cuisine to try, I’d suggest going to Kurumba for Sri Lankan food!
