Curiously Carmen

Red Robin – Burnaby Location

May 23, 2019

Ah, Red Robin… so many memories from this place. During the beginning of our relationship, the boyfriend and I went to the North Vancouver location quite often. We were so sad when we drove out one day and they had shut down!

That was about 3 years ago now so we sadly don’t get to have our Red Robin fix anymore. But for Cheeseburger’s birthday back in February this year, he wanted Red Robin so we all went to the Burnaby one next to Lougheed Mall. We took him many years ago when the North Vancouver location was still open, and he’s loved it ever since!

I tried to make a reservation since it was a Saturday night, but was told they don’t accept reservations during that time. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes for a table. I was happy to see that it was busy because I do not want this location to get shut down either!

Freckled lemonade: Obviously, I had to start with their freckled lemonade! I love that it comes with unlimited refills. The lemonade is on the sweet side because they add strawberry syrup and strawberries.

This isn’t a healthy drink and is full of sugar, but it’s a nice treat to have occasionally.

Silver spoon smores: The birthday boy, ordered a delicious milkshake! The silver spoon smores came with toasted marshmallows, chocolate dipped graham crackers, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup. Doesn’t that sound heavenly?

Simply grilled burger: The boyfriend went with the simply grilled burger, which he always used to order as well. To make it more filling, he added another patty and had some cheese with it too. He loves the simply grilled patties because they are juicy and flavourful.

The veggies for the burger came on the side. There was a generous amount and the veggies were all fresh too. For the side, he picked the endless fries which are always a good idea.

Prime chophouse burger: If you love onions, this burger is for you! Cheeseburger picked this and he loved every bite.

The burger came with crispy onion inside, and was topped with an onion ring. It also included sauteed mushrooms, steak sauce, and Provolone cheese.

Buffalo chicken wings: Maki ordered the buffalo chicken wings with feta cheese. She wasn’t a fan of the buffalo sauce so she didn’t end up eating that much of it. The boyfriend and Nigiri helped her eat the rest, they enjoyed it more than she did.

Good thing she also ordered a stack of onion rings! I forgot to take a picture of them, but they were more enjoyable than the chicken wings.

Simply grilled chicken burger: Due to my digestive issues, I played it safe and ordered the grilled chicken burger. It turned out to be a very delicious choice and light enough for my stomach to handle!

The chicken had a nice char, and grilled flavour. In addition, the meat was juicy. It also came with a bunch of fresh veggies that made the burger seem bigger. I ordered a salad with vinaigrette sauce on the side because I didn’t want a flareup from the fries.

All in all, we had a delicious albeit unhealthy meal at Red Robin’s. I’d recommend Red Robin’s if you were wanting a good and reliable burger. No, it’s not a fancy, boujie, or trendy place but it’s a classic!

The Keg – North Burnaby Location – Revisit

May 22, 2019

The Keg in North Burnaby was one of my first ever blog posts, over five years ago! Since then, The Keg has been one of the go-to places with my parents for special occasions. We come here at least 2-3x a year, so I figured it was time for an update post!

This location is located next to the Costco in North Burnaby. There is a big, free parking lot but we still find it hard to find parking, depending on the time of the year or if it’s Mother’s/Father’s day.

Prime rib, medium rare, 8 oz: This is my parent’s go-to! Their prime rib is always amaaaazing. It is tender and cooked to a perfect medium rare. Just looking at the picture makes me salivate.

That night, they got the grilled vegetables, but the double baked potato or mashed potatoes are quite delicious too. The angle of my photo makes the steak look small, but it’s a filling portion.

Tuna steak: I usually get the prime rib too, but my digestive problems were at its peak that week so I wouldn’t have been able to handle a rich and juicy steak or that much red meat. How sad right? So, I decided to play it safe and order a tuna steak. This was my first time ordering a non-beef item at The Keg.

The tuna steak was very small and not that filling. I found it to be a bit dry too. For the portion and price, the steak was definitely the better value and I felt pretty ripped off by this. But what can I do? Hopefully next time, my stomach will be in better condition so I can have the prime rib.

Baseball top sirloin: The boyfriend went with the baseball top sirloin that night! It was also a 8 oz, but looked smaller because it was thick. I believe it’s called a ‘baseball’ sirloin because it’s thick and could easily fit in the palm of your hand like a baseball would.

He enjoyed the sirloin a lot and had no complaints. Since this is such a thick cut, they can only cook it to a medium rare.

Service here can be a bit hit or miss here, depending on the day that you come. But the steaks are consistently delicious and it is a good place to come for a special occasion!

Food: Joey Burnaby

February 3, 2018

The girls and I thought it would be nice to go out for a fancy-ish dinner. Normally, we only go to Asian restaurants so it was a really nice change from the usual! We also brought the guys out this time too. However, I didn’t get a chance to take pictures of everyone’s food.

Despite making a reservation for 7pm, there was still a bit of a wait. On the good side, they were giving everyone a glass of champagne so that was a nice start to the night!
Spanish paella, $22.50: This sounded delicious on the menu so I had to order it! Actually, three of us did! It looks big in the photo, but it was actually smaller than expected. The sauce was quite creamy which made it filling though.

The prawns and shrimp were large, fresh and snappy and were probably my favourite part. The chicken was a close second, being that it was grilled nicely and very juicy. One disappointing thing about this dish was that the chorizo sausage was cut very thin… like almost paper thin.

I couldn’t really taste the lobster saffron broth as described on the menu, but the creamy tomato sauce was still very good. The rice had more of a creamy risotto texture which was delicious!
Hand pressed burger, $14.50: The boyfriend’s burger was big and filling, exactly what he wanted after a long day at work. I had a bite of it and the patty was juicy and grilled nicely. No complaints here!
Crispy mash, $5: This is not on the menu but it is quite popular! The crispy mash is essentially a deep fried spring roll with garlic mashed potatoes inside. A few of us ordered this as an additional side because it is delicious.

The crispy mash comes out piping hot and fresh. The spring roll is very crispy while the mashed potatoes inside are nice and buttery.
Ravioli with lobster cream & grilled prawns, $24: Cocoa’s dish looked delicious and she said it was! Although the portion looked a bit small, the lobster cream was heavy enough for it to be filling. It also came with fresh dill.

Prior to this visit, it has been awhile since my last dinner at Joey’s. The food was great and service was consistent. Adding to the fact that there is free underground parking, Joey Burnaby is a great dining choice.

Yay!

Memphis Blues BBQ House

August 17, 2017

It’s no secret that the boyfriend and I love our BBQ meats! One of the places the boyfriend has been wanting to try for the past year was Memphis Blues, but we never ended up getting around to it until this summer! Since we tried this place, it’s been our go-to for BBQ in Vancouver.

This post features our first visit, and another visit with friends. We’ve also been a couple more times that I didn’t take pictures of, because we pretty much ordered the same thing.

We vary between going to the West Broadway or Commercial location. We found out on our second visit that the West Broadway one has free parking underground, but unfortunately it was all full.

The picture above is of the West Broadway location! I’m not going to write a review for the Commercial location because the quality and taste of both don’t vary much.

Jambalaya (Prices aren’t listed on their website): Jambalaya is a strange thing to order at a BBQ restaurant, but the boyfriend thought it was really good! It was incredibly cheesy, and came loaded with chicken, shrimp, and sausage. He would love to order it again.

Two meat combo, $25~ (From memory, price not listed on website): The two meat combo is great for two people. Since it was out first visit, we made the mistake of ordering both the jambalaya and the combo. But hey, now we know the portion sizes for the future!

Brisket is my favourite type of BBQ meat, and it was very delicious. It was tender, with a delicious smokey flavour to it. The pulled pork was also very tender and flavourful. The sides of beans, cole slaw, and cornbread also really filled us up!

On our second visit, we came with our friends since Fairy Bread was wanting to try this place! When we all got there, we found out they were having a special on the Elvis platter, which is what we were planning on sharing! I don’t remember the exact discount though, and their website sucks.

Elvis platter: The Elvis platter is meant to share for 6 people, which is what we did! Our eyes were wide and our stomachs were ready to devour this platter. It came with BBQ chicken, ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, ribends, sausage and beans, cole slaw, and potato salad as the sides.

Surprisingly, the potato salad was one of the stars that day! Some of us found that the brisket was more on the dry side, unfortunately. The brisket on my first visit was definitely more tender than this visit.

Memphis Blues is a solid choice if you’re wanting some BBQ in Vancouver. Vancouver isn’t well known for BBQ which is a shame. I think there are only a handful of BBQ places. Perhaps more BBQ places will pop up! You know where to find us if they do.

Yay!

Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse

March 9, 2017

It was my mom’s birthday, and I wanted to take my parents out for dinner! She suggested Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse after hearing it about it from her coworkers. I’ve heard many great things about this place, especially during Dine Out season. I remember attempting to make a Dine Out reservation, only to be told there was a 50 table wait list!

After taking a look at the menu, they offered a $25 three course dinner which seemed like a good value! Plus, there were dairy free options for myself! It’s hard for me to have a set menu because most items contain dairy, especially the dessert. But, I called in a day before to ask about their dairy free options and they said they could give me sorbet or fruit instead of the usual dessert.

Since it is a set course, the price for each item will not be included.

Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse is located in a pretty quiet and hidden area, by Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. There was a large parking lot for both golf course and restaurant customers.

Walking towards the restaurant, I didn’t expect the exterior to look as plain as it did. But, the interior looked pretty nice and modern. It also wasn’t that large of a restaurant, so it felt pretty cozy and intimate inside.

Crispy prawn Caesar salad: My dad ordered this and said it was pretty decent! The romaine lettuce was nice and crunchy.

Seafood chowder: My mom said the chowder was really good and filling, due to how creamy it was. There was also a good amount of salmon and other seafood!

Veggie spring roll salad: I ordered this because it was the only dairy free appy option. The salad was Asian inspired, with a sweet chili and peanut sauce. My dad actually enjoyed the taste of my salad more than his! The spring rolls were a nice filling addition and were crunchy, with some peas, carrots and cabbage filling.

New York steak: Both my parents ordered the 8 oz NY steak, and enjoyed it. I had a few bites and there was an amazing grilled and charred flavour to it, but not that yucky burnt flavour!

Wild sockeye salmon: I didn’t want us to have 3 of the same dish, so I tried the salmon! I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it!

It came with a clam and tomato infused pilaf, but I tasted mainly only the tomato. I really liked the tiny chopped pieces of pineapple in the rice because it added some extra texture and pop of healthy, sweet flavour! It reminded me of Malaysian style rice with the pineapple.

My salmon also flaked nicely and was juicy!

Waffle with ice cream: Man, did this smell good. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth and prefer savoury items (which is a blessing considering my dairy restritcion) but this smelled so good that I really wanted it. But I resisted for the sake of my health. Sad life.

Ice cream w/ ginger cake: My dad was confused with the Mason jar style that is so hip nowadays, LOL. He said it wasn’t as practical to eat the dessert, which is true. The ice cream came w a ginger cake that he wasn’t a fan of.

Raspberry sorbet: My dessert looked so sad compared to theirs ๐Ÿ™ and it was so plain. But I’m glad they had a dairy free option available! Once I saw my mom’s waffle w strawberry syrup, I asked if I could have a side of the syrup to drizzle over. That made my sorbet taste a lot better!

All in all, we enjoyed our visit to Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse and can see why it’s so popular during Dine Out. You get a quality, fancy meal with an excellent atmosphere at a very affordable price.

Service was a bit slow but our server was friendly and did an excellent job in acknowledging my dietary restriction!

I would definitely recommend this place for a special occasion or day without breaking the wallet!

Yay!
