Deer Garden – Fraser St Revisit

November 18, 2020

I have a few reviews on all of the Deer Garden locations, but it bothered me that the last time I wrote a review on the Fraser St location, my go-to Deer Garden location, was five years ago! The fiance and I come here often, but I never ended up writing a revisit post until now. You can also read my previous posts on other Deer Garden locations.

We were quickly seated and asked for contact information for tracing. Service here is usually not friendly, but at least they are efficient and fast.

Desert chicken wings: We rarely order the sides here because the noodle portions are so big already, but we were very hungry that day!

The name “desert chicken wings” always gave me a chuckle because I’m not sure where the desert part comes in. Nonetheless, the chicken wings were delicious! They were piping hot, crunchy and juicy and reminded me of chicken karage.

Drinks: The soup combos come with a drink too. The hot drinks are usually free unless you order one with lemon. I got the almond milk, but I should warn my lactose intolerant peeps that I’m pretty sure they add milk powder or condensed milk to it because it’s quite creamy. The fiance got the cold calpis drink.

DIY Soup Noodle: I’ve been getting the same bowl of noodles with a few minor revisions over the past 5 years. My go to is the century egg and parsley soup with crystal noodles. For the toppings, I’ve been getting sausage and extra bean curd these days.

I used to get the vermicelli noodles, but about a year ago, they changed noodle brands and the new one wasn’t as good. Also, they used to have fresh bean curd which I was a huge fan of… They “temporarily” sold out though, and by “temporary” I mean that there has been a hand written sign on the wall for over a year. I’ve pretty much given up on having fresh bean curd here anymore, which is more silky and light.

Despite the changes, the broth was delicious as usual. The sausage was nicely grilled before putting it into the broth. The portion was enormous as usual and it’s hard to leave Deer Garden hungry.

DIY soup noodles: The fiance either picks from the spicy peanut broth or laksa broth. On this visit, he went with the laksa broth. I never got into laksa broth surprisingly enough, but I don’t mind taking a few sips here and there. The laksa broth was creamy and flavourful with a subtle hint of spice.

For the toppings, he went with egg noodles, luncheon meat and beef. It was a very satisfying bowl of noodles.

No matter which Deer Garden you go to, they are always consistent and delicious. It’s a staple Asian restaurant in Vancouver and popular for good reasons. They have the best DIY soup combos with huge portions and a decent price.

Deer Garden – Richmond (Venezia Plaza)

October 5, 2020

I’ve written about all the Deer Garden locations (Fraser Street, Burnaby, other Richmond location) so far, except for the second location in Richmond on the second floor of Venezia Plaza!

Usually, our go-to location is the Fraser Street location but since we were going to Richmond, we decided to go here instead.

I’ve been to this location a couple times over the years. From what I remember, parking is usually horrible, cramped and busy in this plaza (as with most Richmond plazas…) but things have quieted down due to the pandemic, I am assuming. There was no issue finding parking this time.

DIY noodle soup: I went with my usual DIY combo, which hasn’t changed for many years now. For those who haven’t been to Deer Garden, you pick your soup base – most have no MSG, two toppings, noodle choice, and drink.

I went with the century egg and parsley soup base, pork sausage, extra fresh beancurd, and Korean crystal potato noodle. You can also add on a small appetizer as well.

As usual, everything was delicious and super filling. My only complaint was that the century egg could have been tastier. There was a bit of an old, cupboard taste to it.

For my drink, I went with a lemon ribena. It was recommended to me by Latte and was refreshing and delicious.

DIY noodle soup: The fiance went with the peanut chili soup, luncheon meat, beef brisket and egg noodles. Over the years, we’ve gone to many soup noodle places but Deer Garden consistently has the best peanut chili soup. The milk tea was fragrant and strong as well.

Deer Garden is consistently delicious and reliable, no matter which location you go to!

Deer Garden Signatures – Richmond (Capstan Way)

April 21, 2019

After a fun evening doing an escape room with Latte and her friend, the boyfriend and I were pretty hungry so I suggested good ol’ Deer Garden. There are two locations in Richmond, we decided to go to the one on Capstan Way since there’s more parking at this location.

We had to wait about 20-30 minutes, which was expected since it was a busy Saturday night!

French toast: Since Latte and her friend already ate prior to doing the escape room, they ordered a small snack to share (we were happy to learn that they did not have a minimum charge!).

Latte is a fan of the french toast here and it did not disappoint! The french toast came in cubes already which was convenient, and you also get more of the fried edges.

Noodle soup: I went with my usual noodle soup: fish and century egg soup, with beef balls, sausage, and crystal noodles. I had no complaints about the noodles and absolutely devoured everything. I was so hungry! It was consistent with all the other Deer Garden locations I’ve been to.

Noodle soup: The boyfriend went with the chili peanut soup with beef, crystal noodles, and I forgot the other topping. The chili peanut soup is his favourite here, and he enjoyed it a lot too.

Deer Garden is comforting, filling, and so delicious! We left very satisfied and I wouldn’t mind coming back to this location if I was in Richmond again.

Deer Garden Signatures – Burnaby

April 5, 2019

Deer Garden is a restaurant the boyfriend and I go to sometimes, when we are craving soup noodles. We usually go to the Fraser Street location and actually didn’t even know there was a Deer Garden in this area until we were walking by on the way to Myst one day!

A few months later, we were doing some errands around Metrotown so it was a convenient time to finally try this location.

There is a small parking lot on the side, but it was all full. There’s also free street parking in the area, but you may have to walk 2-3 blocks.

The size of the Burnaby Deer Garden is a bit smaller than the Vancouver one, but the layout is the same.

Unfortunately, we got the worst table in the restaurant that day. It seems like it used to be part of the waiting area, but they decided to add a random table (the other tables were all booth seats). Throughout the meal, waiting customers were standing very close to us and it was a bit hard to get service.

Pork cutlet: The boyfriend felt like adding a pork cutlet to his lunch! I didn’t try any, but he really enjoyed it. The pork cutlet was served piping hot, and with a loud, audible crunch so you know that the batter was fresh.

DIY noodles: I ordered the century egg and fish soup, Korean crystal noodle with fish and sausage. The soup broth taste was consistent with their other location.

I love Deer Garden’s grilled sausage, it has been so long since I ordered it due to my digestive issues. My system wasn’t in a flare-up that day so I was able to spoil myself… it did not disappoint *heart eyes*.

Some of the crystal noodles were not completely cooked, and hard when I bit into… so I soaked them in the hot soup while eating the fish and sausage first. There was a good amount of boiled plain fish and century egg.

DIY noodles: The boyfriend ordered laksa soup, egg noodles with fish balls and sausage. There were only 3 measly fish balls, which was a bit of a disappointment! Otherwise, he enjoyed his noodles and was quite full after, especially with the pork cutlet addition.

The Vancouver location is a bit more convenient, but we wouldn’t mind coming back here if we were in the area!

Deer Garden Signatures (Vancouver location)

December 28, 2015

I can’t believe I haven’t written about Deer Garden yet because I love this place so much! I would come here more if there wasn’t any lines, and if I lived closer. The boyfriend and I both hate waiting in lines for food, which is why we don’t come here as often as we like.
Deer Garden Signature Vancouver Richmond Does anyone here watch Big Brother Canada? Every time I come here, I am reminded of Marsha the Moose from their wall decor.
Deer GardenSoup base & noodles combo, $9.95: The reason why the boyfriend loves this place a lot more than Cattle Cafe is that Deer Garden still serves the spicy peanut soup. Ever since Cattle Cafe discontinued the spicy peanut soup, he jumps at the chance to go to Deer Garden as they are the only place around that still has it. Correct me if I’m wrong or if you know of any other restaurants with the spicy peanut soup base!

Choice of soup: Chili peanut
Choice of noodles: Egg Noodles
Choice of toppings: Chicken balls and Vietnamese style pork  (choice of 2, additional toppings @ 1.50 each)
Deer Garden Signature Vancouver Richmond The soup has a very strong peanut taste, so I would definitely recommend this broth if you are an avid peanut sauce lover like he is. For me, I am neutral towards peanut butter and thought that the Cattle Cafe soup too strong. I can have some of the peanut soup here without feeling that it is overwhelming peanut-y.

As usual, the bowl came with a very generous amount of noodles!
Deer Garden Signature Vancouver Richmond Soup base & noodles combo, $9.95: Fun fact about me, I have been known to place the wrong order with the soup noodle combo. This is the third time that I ordered incorrectly -_- I think it’s because whenever I look at the ordering paper, I see part of the name and I just check it off without bothering to read the rest. The worst time was when I ordered a tomato soup base instead 🙁

Choice of soup: Fish soup
Choice of noodles: Vermicelli
Choice of toppings: Sliced cuttlefish (ordered the wrong item by accident), beef ball, and basa fish fillet ($1.50 extra)

Deer Garden Signature Vancouver Richmond I normally get fish soup w/ century egg & parsely, but I’ve been getting off tasting century egg the past couple of times so I decided to just try the fish soup. It’s actually just the same soup but without the century egg, and comes with some beancurd.

Normally, I would have just eaten the cuttlefish since it was my mistake and Asian restaurants aren’t forgiving when it comes to this stuff and won’t replace it for you. But I was really looking forward to the fish fillet and ordered it as an extra, giving the cuttlefish to the boyfriend.

As usual, the bowl of noodles was warm, comforting, and extremely filling. We love coming here because the noodle combos are consistently delicious and satisfying. It’s too bad that there’s always a line up here, or we would be coming a lot more!

Yay!
