Food: Mr. Chili Noodle House (Two visits)

November 27, 2017

When Mr. Chili popped up in the area last year, I was quite excited to try it because I looooove noodles. However, the initial reviews online weren’t that good so my excitement died down. For the past few months, they have been on Groupon so I decided it was time to try it.

I didn’t realize I bought two Groupons for this place on two separate occasions so I went twice… but once was probably enough as it was meh.

I feel like many people don’t know that this place exists. I’ve told my parents, boyfriends, and a few friends about it and they’re all like ??? despite frequenting this area. It’s one of those places that you just pass by without a second glance.

Both Groupons were essentially 50% off the bill. If you’d like to be specific, the first Groupon was $10 for $20 worth of food, while the second Groupon was $20 for $40 worth of food. Again, I don’t remember why I bought two Groupons… must have been really tired the first time and forgot that the Groupon existed…

One thing I’ll give Mr. Chili is their interior design and decor. In fact, I loved their design more than I loved the food.

It’s also very clean and spotless in here (maybe because no one ever comes? LOL ok I’ll stop being so harsh...)

Beef Noodle Soup, $9.50: This beef noodle soup was DEFINITELY not worth $9.50. The soup was very flat and flavourless. It tasted just like salt water. In addition, the brisket was quite tough and flavourless as well.

On the plus, I quite enjoyed the noodles. They had a denser texture to them and were cooked perfectly.

Chicken laksa, $8.95: On the first visit, the boyfriend decided to go with the laksa. It was a way better choice than mine because the laksa actually had flavour to it and was creamy. There was also a good amount of spice. Meanwhile, the chicken was tender.

Now, it’s time for the second visit!

Seafood laksa noodle soup, $8.95: Since the boyfriend’s chicken laksa soup was pretty good during our first visit, he and my mom decided to try the seafood version instead.

When it arrived, they were both pretty disappointed with the amount of “seafood” inside. It came with a measly 3 fish balls cut in half so it looked like more, a small piece of shrimp, dried shrimp flakes, and a mussel (which was very small).

The soup was still flavourful but the value didn’t seem worth it. Better off to get the chicken laksa instead.

Spicy pork intestine noodle soup, $8.50: My dad enjoyed the spicy pork intestine, which I found surprising because he can be very picky sometimes!

Tomato seafood noodle soup, $8.95: I decided to try this since the beef noodle soup was disappointing (see above). This was disappointing as well. The soup was very bland, with only a hint of tomato flavour.

All in all, Mr. Chili was quite meh. Would I recommend coming here without a Groupon (aka paying full price)? Definitely not.

Service was also very, very, very slow. On the second visit, my mom’s seafood laksa came first and she was almost done her bowl before the rest of ours came. In addition, the 2 servers seemed very frazzled, confused, and rushed all the time… but there were only 3 tables??? We think that there was only one kitchen staff because our food came out super slow and one at a time.

Honestly not too sure how this place will survive with how quiet it is. I really wanted to like this place so I had a close noodle joint to go to but there are a lot of better noodle options in the Lower Mainland.

Nay….

Food: Earl’s – Happy Hour

November 17, 2017

Mmmm, happy hour. Is it weird that I go to happy hour mainly for the cheap food instead of alcohol?

Cocoa suggested that we check out Earl’s for happy hour after work a couple of months ago. They have a pretty good menu for happy hour, and one of the perks about Earl’s is that they offer happy hour specials on Friday & Saturday nights too!

The last time I went to Earl’s was over a year ago and it was for dinner, so it was my first time trying their happy hour. Here’s how it went!
Virgin passion fruit limeade, $4.50: This came with passion fruit, mint, and fresh lime juice. It was a bit sour for my liking and I wish that there was more passion fruit flavour. Nonetheless, it was alright and a good non-alcoholic drink.

I should also mention that if you like highballs, they are only $3 during happy hour! Yes, I am aware that my virgin drink cost more than alcohol… when does that ever happen???
Maui Ahi Poke, $9.50: I can’t sing enough praises about the ahi tuna poke… it was so delicious! In fact, I came back here a week later and ordered the same thing because I enjoyed it that much.

The poke came with some cilantro, mango, smashed avocado, and a side of chips. It was seasoned with sesame oil which is why I loved it so much. Whenever I make my own tuna poke at home, I use sesame oil as my main marinate so the poke at Earl’s was exactly how I liked it!

I would recommend scooping the poke on the chips. A bit unconventional but the chips are really bland on its own. Think of it was a Western twist on poke?
Garlic fries, $3.50: Cocoa and her friend decided to share this, but it was quite disappointing for garlic fries. There wasn’t really any garlic taste at all. It tasted just like normal fries.
Chicken tacos, $7.50: We each ordered two chicken tacos for $7.50, which was a pretty decent price.

We all enjoyed the tacos. The ingredients were fresh and did a good job in filling us up.
Margherita pizza w/salami add on, $5~: Without the salami, the margherita pizza was only$3.50 which is so cheap! However, do be warned that it is definitely a snack size and is quite small. Cocoa had no complaints about the pizza.

Avocado toast, $7.50: Cocoa’s friend was curious about the avocado toast, so she decided to try it. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t curious either but I never order it from restaurants as I can easily make it at home. I feel like avocado toast has also become so amusing ever since that businessman said in the news that avocado toast is the reason young people can’t afford a house these days.

Anyways, the avocado toast was disappointing. There wasn’t much flavour to it and it was really plain… definitely not worth $7.50.
A shot of all our food! Overall, some food items were a hit or miss but I would definitely come back now that I know what to order and what to avoid. The prices are great and it is a good place to go to hang out over food. And now that you’ve read my review, you can learn from our mistakes and not spend your money on the items that weren’t worth it 😉

Service was spotty and a bit slow at times, they also forgot Cocoa’s poke and we had to ask them about it. On my second visit here the following week, we were seated and waited 15 minutes for a server. Finally, one of the servers there noticed that we had been sitting there for awhile with no one so he ended up helping us for the rest of the night.

Yay!

Food: Minami

November 8, 2017

Whoops, this post is long overdue! Near the end of summer, I finally tried Minami with Maki and her friend. Minami is one of the most popular restaurants for upscale Japanese dining in Vancouver. One of the other most popular spots for Japanese fine dining is their sister restaurant, Miku.

I actually went to Miku almost two years ago now, but forgot to write a review and it is in my old phone. So that review will probably not resurface.

Enjoy a review of Minami instead!

Much like its counterpart, Minami has a modern decor theme with some Japanese influences.

We made a reservation for an early dinner. It was a good choice since I noticed the spots filled up pretty quick.

Since Maki and I haven’t been here before, we let her friend do the ordering for us!

Aburi Beef Carpaccio,$19.50: AAA Sterling silver short rib, sous vide egg, shaved grana padano cheese and ponzu sauce.

I can’t wrap my head around beef carpaccio, even though I know that this is safe to eat and probably delicious. Also, it doesn’t make sense because I love other raw food such as salmon, tuna, scallop… And I like my steak done rare???

Anyways, I let the other two eat this while I waited for the other items to come!

Sashimi platter: Website says $20/person but this wasn’t the case when we came, and I can’t remember the price anymore.

Anyways, the sashimi was absolutely delicious and fresh as expected!

You can also ask for the shrimp heads to be deep fried once you’re done eating the meat part.

Aburi sashimi, $25: The aburi sashimi came with two pieces of each, which was up to the chef’s decision. The little flower decoration was a really cute touch.

They came lightly seared and just like their sashimi counterpart, it was fresh and delicious.

Each aburi sashimi also came with a sauce on the side or on top. They were quite unique but the flavours went really well together. The sauces gave the sashimi some umami flavour.

Salmon oshi sushi, $17: One of Minami’s most popular dishes! Oshi sushi is a pressed sushi, which gives it the box shape. It came with BC wild sockeye salmon, jalapeno, and Miku sauce (not sure exactly what that is but I am assuming it is partly made out of mayo).

Saba oshi sushi, $16: The saba oshi sushi came with a delicious miso sauce! Saba is mackerel, incase you were wondering.

Both oshi sushi were delicious. The sushi rice was seasoned very well. The sauces and the flame-seared technique made it taste even better. I highly recommend trying their oshi sushi as they are well known for it.

Pacific roll: We ordered a bit too much food and probably shouldn’t have ordered this! I don’t see this item on the website anymore, so I guess they change up their food offerings often.

Little Emperor, $6: I decided to try one of their virgin drinks! The Little Emperor came with blueberry basil syrup, yuzu, and ginger ale. I quite enjoyed it and thought it was a delicious and sweet mix of flavours. It wasn’t overly sweet, but just the perfect amount.

Yay!

Steveston Pizza Co

November 2, 2017

I’m not sure why I haven’t really had of this place before, but my dad suggested that we try Steveston Pizza Co during a trip out to Steveston in the summer. It was quite surprising because he normally doesn’t suggest non -Asian food so I took this as a good sign!

Prior to going, I read reviews that suggested to call ahead to avoid waiting in line. It was a really good idea because when we got there, it was pretty packed!

The restaurant is incredibly small and unassuming, with only a small window stool sitting area. It was also stuffy in there so pretty much everyone in the cramped space was just waiting for take out. There is a grass picnic area that most people enjoyed their pizza at, including ourselves!

For the four of us, we ordered two pizzas. It was a bit too much but one pizza wouldn’t have been enough so we just brought the leftovers home!

Princess, $38: $38 for a single pizza was the most I’ve paid! However I trusted the reviews of the food community and my dad really wanted to try it.

The princess was a seafood pizza that came with smoked salmon and jumbo prawn tower, and shrimp scattered thoughout.

I’m glad we tried it because it was delicious! The jumbo prawns were very fresh and snappy. There was a generous amount of jumbo prawns and smoked salmon which justified the price.

Hawaiian, $25: Again, this was more than I normally pay for pizza but whatever! My parents love Hawaiian so this was our second pick.

It came with SO MUCH pineapple!!! Yes, I am one of those people who think pineapple tastes good on pizza. This one was a lot thicker because of the amount of pineapple, ham and cheese.

I would definitely recommend trying Steveston Pizza Co! Maybe not regularly because it’s pricier than most pizza places, but it’s great to enjoy on a sunny day in Steveston.

As well, even though it’s more expensive, the quality is definitely there. None of us felt gross or were thirsty afterwards which is always a good sign!

Yay!

Chef Hung Taiwanese Noodle

October 19, 2017

In August, I had a craving for Taiwanese noodles, even though it was very hot outside. So after doing some research, I remembered that SFU had just opened a new Taiwanese noodle place, Chef Hung!

I’ve been to the Chef Hung at Aberdeen Center in Richmond at least 6-7 years ago and remembered that it was really good but haven’t gone back since.

Seeing that the distance between Chef Hung’s and another Taiwanese beef noodle place was about the same we decided to go to SFU because we knew that it would not be as busy on a Friday night.

Since it was semester break the restaurant was pretty quiet. Prior to visiting, we called the restaurant to see if it was open as many other food places at SFU were closed during the break.

I’ve heard that during school time the restaurant is pretty lined up and busy though.

The restaurant was pretty comfortable and also very clean! That’s always the plus side of going to new restaurants 🙂

Champion beef brisket in clear noodle soup: I just wanted the standard Taiwanese beef noodle but the menu was a bit confusing as the descriptions didn’t seem to have it. So I decided to just take the chance and get this one and hope that it was the correct one.

Unfortunately, I was wrong! This was not this Taiwanese beef noodle soup that I was craving but I decided to try it anyways! I wasn’t a big fan of the meat because I don’t normally enjoy eating skin or tendon or anything like that, so luckily the boyfriend was able to have all of the meat.

As for the broth, it was really clear and it tasted pretty healthy. I was hoping to have the dark beef broth with preserved veggies that usually comes with Taiwanese noodles but this one was alright too. The only thing that matched my cravings were the chewy flat noodles which were delicious. There were dense and chewy.

Award-winning beef shank and tripe in tomato noodle soup: I guess beef shank was the meat that I was looking for but it’s quite confusing because restaurants describe their meats differently.

So we ended up trading the meat and I had the beef shank, which the boyfriend didn’t mind because he liked the meat in my bowl better anyways. The beef shank was PERFECTTTT, it was so tender and full of marinated flavour!

Just like my soup, his tomato soup was pretty clear and also healthy not to oily or salty.

Taiwanese chicken nuggets: The boyfriend was curious as to how the chicken nuggets fared here. It was a good choice because he really liked them! They weren’t too salty, not overcooked, and very fresh and crispy.

Overall I think that this place is a bit overpriced but you do get what you pay for! All the ingredients are of good quality but it was disappointing to see that they didn’t have the standard Taiwanese beef noodle soup that most Taiwanese restaurants have. However, it’s definitely a decent option to have if you are stuck on campus.

Yay!
