Sushi Day

July 11, 2018

Biscotti and I were looking for a place to order lunch from one Friday, and came across Sushi Day on Yelp (Or was it Skip the Dishes, can’t remember). Both of us haven’t been here before and seeing that it was close by and the reviews were good, we decided to give this place a try!

Sushi Day is located at Park and Tilford plaza in North Vancouver. The restaurant is quite small so it is easy to miss. Walking in, I’m glad that we ordered take out because it was CRAMPED! There’s probably about 4-6 tables all closely together.

Tuna & salmon sashimi, $12.95: Right away, I noticed the quality of the salmon sashimi. The price point of $12.95 is more than I’m used to for sashimi, but after eating it, I could see why. Both tuna and salmon sashimi were very fresh and delicious. I’m pretty sure they only use wild salmon and tuna here.

Tamago roll, $3.50: It’s been a hot minute since I’ve had tamago, so I ordered this. No complaints about the tamago roll!

Inari roll, $4.50: I’ve never ordered inari roll before, which is a sweet tofu skin roll. I’ve only had it wrapped up as a triangle before, which I really enjoyed. Anyways, turned out that we over ordered and I was too full to try some of this. But Biscotti had no complaints about it.

Popcorn shrimp roll, $13.95: This was very intriguing on the menu, so we decided to give it a try. Good thing we did because it was so delicious! The roll was made up of prawn tempura, while the outside had popcorn shrimp and was heavily drizzled with a sweet chili sauce.

This is definitely a ‘Westernized’ roll and definitely not a traditional Japanese roll but it was really good. Not healthy for you though since it’s deep fried and super saucy, but it’s good to try different things sometimes.

Salmon and avocado roll, $5.50: To balance off the unhealthiness of the popcorn shrimp roll, we also ordered this. The salmon was super fresh and delicious like the sashimi above. The avocado was ripe and buttery too.

Double crunch yam roll, $9,95: The double crunch yam roll was really good. It had the same sweet chili sauce as the popcorn shrimp roll. The inside had deep fried yam and avocado. Then, it was topped with another layer of deep fried yam. If yam is your thing, you should definitely try this roll.

We definitely over estimated and ordered wayyy too much food for both of us. This meant that I was able to bring some back for dinner! Sushi Day was a great find. They are more on the pricey side, but the quality of the sashimi and rolls really show. I would recommend getting take out since the restaurant is so tiny and cramped.

Yay!

Food: Sushi Hub

May 3, 2018

Do you ever go out to eat by yourself? I know that some people find it weird, but I could not care less!

After work one evening, I decided to go on Yelp and try a place that I’ve never been to. It was a fantastic idea because I really liked it here and ended up taking the boyfriend a few weeks later.

Sushi Hub is located on Main and 33rd, right by QE Park. Finding free street parking was not an issue which is a definite plus. The restaurant itself is pretty small and can feel cramped during peak periods.

Salmon and mango roll, $5.00: Salmon and mango roll is one of my favourites, although not all restaurants offer it. So whenever I see it on the menu, I jump at the chance to get it!

Even though it was simple, I kept thinking about it the next day. There was a large portion of fresh salmon and the mango… omg, it was so ripe and delicious.

Tuna and avocado roll, $5.00: Mmmm… this was delicious as well! As you can see, there was a generous portion of fresh tuna sashimi in each roll. The avocado was ripe and delicious too!

Assorted aburi sushi ($2.45-$2.75/piece): Reviews on Yelp stated that their torched sushi was delicious, so I ordered a few pieces to try. It was such a good idea because the aburi was amazing as well.

What stood out to me was the fresh garlic, ground pepper, and salt that they sprinkle on top. This small detail really highlighted the seared/grilled taste. Such a small thing but made a big difference.

Beef teriyaki roll, $5: On a separate visit, I brought the boyfriend here and we tried a couple of different rolls. The beef teriyaki had a very generous portion of seasoned beef and lightly drizzled with teriyaki sauce.

BC roll, $4: BC rolls are either hit or miss, at Sushi Hub it was a hit. The salmon skin was lightly fried so it was a bit crunchy and tasted fresh.

Assorted sushi sampler, $14: Had to make sure that the boyfriend didn’t leave without trying the aburi sushi! It was just as delicious as the first time!

I’m really glad that I tried Sushi Hub because of how fresh and flavourful everything is. Service was also quick and attentive. There’s no doubt that we will come back here when we are craving sushi.

Yay!

Food: Sushi House – Two visits

April 28, 2018

A couple of months ago, the boyfriend was working in Richmond and stopped by Sushi House for lunch. We came here almost five years ago with some people, but I have completely forgotten how the food was there. So let’s treat this as a new visit!

Lunch combo, $11.95: On his own visit, the boyfriend ordered the lunch special. Sushi House was quite packed with other workers on their lunch break.

The sashimi don was filling and fresh. The sushi rice was prepared well too. For $11.95, this is a good deal! Look at how much sashimi there is =O

It also came with a side of salad and miso soup. He said the lunch deal was really worth it and would come back for it.
A couple of weeks later, he took me here and we ordered some other items!

Negitoro roll: There was a good amount of fresh and soft tuna.

Chopped scallop roll, $4.25: The scallop had a nice snap to it, which is evidence that it is fresh.

Beef teriyaki roll, $3.75: Normally we don’t order teriyaki rolls, but the boyfriend wanted to see how it fared here. He had no complaints about it and I didn’t try it since we had ordered so many rolls that night.
Tamago roll, $2.50: I love my tamago! This was your average tamago roll, nothing extremely bad or good about it.

Salmon roll, $2.50: Again, the salmon was nice and fresh. There was a good amount of meat to rice ratio too.

Tobiko roll, $3.25: Mmmm, how I love tobiko. So crunchy and savoury. No complaints again!

Sushi House is a solid choice when you find yourself in Richmond. It is a small and cozy restaurant, with attentive service and decent rolls!
Yay!

Food: Osaka Teppanyaki

March 12, 2018

During our trip to Mexico, the boyfriend and I tried out the teppanyaki restaurant at our all-inclusive resort. It was both of our first time having teppanyaki and seeing how it was a fun experience, I wanted to try one in Vancouver to see how it compared!

I came across Osaka Teppanyaki on Yelp and thought it would be fun to try for my birthday.

Osaka Teppanyaki is located on West Broadway. Walking in, the restaurant was a bit dark but somewhat busy. We were seated quickly and brought our tea and water.

For teppanyaki, you have to wait until your seating area is filled (usually bout 9 people) until the chef comes out and cooks for everyone. Otherwise, it’s a waste of their time to come out for only 2 customers. I wonder what happens if the seats next to you don’t fill up??

Anyways, after receiving our complimentary soup (it was some kind of clear beef broth soup, nothing special) and salad (Japanese ginger sauce style), our chef came. He did some quick fire shows which we enjoyed watching. Each person also had 3 complimentary shrimp!

Steak & chicken, $33: The boyfriend’s New York Steak was a perfect medium rare. It was tender and flavourful albeit a bit small.

Steak & chicken, $33: As for the chicken, it was very juicy and flavourful too! I liked how we could see it being prepared, so we knew exactly which types of seasoning were being used.

Shrimp, $33: Although each dish comes with 3 complementary pieces of shrimp, I love shrimp so I ordered it for my main. The shrimp was super delicious. We saw him squeeze fresh lemon juice and a chunk of butter… mm, so good. I’m definitely going to cook it this way at home in the future!

All in all, our first teppanyaki experience in Vancouver was enjoyable. I would recommend going at least once because it’s fun to watch the fire shows and see your food being prepared by the chef.

Yay!

Food: Minami

November 8, 2017

Whoops, this post is long overdue! Near the end of summer, I finally tried Minami with Maki and her friend. Minami is one of the most popular restaurants for upscale Japanese dining in Vancouver. One of the other most popular spots for Japanese fine dining is their sister restaurant, Miku.

I actually went to Miku almost two years ago now, but forgot to write a review and it is in my old phone. So that review will probably not resurface.

Enjoy a review of Minami instead!

Much like its counterpart, Minami has a modern decor theme with some Japanese influences.

We made a reservation for an early dinner. It was a good choice since I noticed the spots filled up pretty quick.

Since Maki and I haven’t been here before, we let her friend do the ordering for us!

Aburi Beef Carpaccio,$19.50: AAA Sterling silver short rib, sous vide egg, shaved grana padano cheese and ponzu sauce.

I can’t wrap my head around beef carpaccio, even though I know that this is safe to eat and probably delicious. Also, it doesn’t make sense because I love other raw food such as salmon, tuna, scallop… And I like my steak done rare???

Anyways, I let the other two eat this while I waited for the other items to come!

Sashimi platter: Website says $20/person but this wasn’t the case when we came, and I can’t remember the price anymore.

Anyways, the sashimi was absolutely delicious and fresh as expected!

You can also ask for the shrimp heads to be deep fried once you’re done eating the meat part.

Aburi sashimi, $25: The aburi sashimi came with two pieces of each, which was up to the chef’s decision. The little flower decoration was a really cute touch.

They came lightly seared and just like their sashimi counterpart, it was fresh and delicious.

Each aburi sashimi also came with a sauce on the side or on top. They were quite unique but the flavours went really well together. The sauces gave the sashimi some umami flavour.

Salmon oshi sushi, $17: One of Minami’s most popular dishes! Oshi sushi is a pressed sushi, which gives it the box shape. It came with BC wild sockeye salmon, jalapeno, and Miku sauce (not sure exactly what that is but I am assuming it is partly made out of mayo).

Saba oshi sushi, $16: The saba oshi sushi came with a delicious miso sauce! Saba is mackerel, incase you were wondering.

Both oshi sushi were delicious. The sushi rice was seasoned very well. The sauces and the flame-seared technique made it taste even better. I highly recommend trying their oshi sushi as they are well known for it.

Pacific roll: We ordered a bit too much food and probably shouldn’t have ordered this! I don’t see this item on the website anymore, so I guess they change up their food offerings often.

Little Emperor, $6: I decided to try one of their virgin drinks! The Little Emperor came with blueberry basil syrup, yuzu, and ginger ale. I quite enjoyed it and thought it was a delicious and sweet mix of flavours. It wasn’t overly sweet, but just the perfect amount.

Yay!
