Curiously Carmen

Anh and Chi

July 25, 2018

My mom and her friend were meeting up for lunch, and she asked me if I wanted to tag along since I haven’t seen her friend for many years! Her friend also suggested going to Anh and Chi, which I wanted to try so along I came.

When I was a kid, I remember this used to also be a Vietnamese restaurant. But it has definitely changed a LOT, the previous one was a family owned, no frills type of restaurant. Anh and Chi is definitely one of the fancier and boujee Vietnamese restaurants that I have been to, and the prices reflect that.
The interior of the restaurant was quite nice. It had a modern, wooden and natural vibe to it. The seating was comfortable too, we got a corner booth. Since we came before the lunch rush, we didn’t have to wait, but noticed towards the end of our meal that a line was forming.
Mushroom spring rolls, $8: My mom and I haven’t been here before, so we let her friend order as she’s been here many times. I’m glad that she ordered because she chose things that I wouldn’t have chosen myself, so I got to try new dishes!

This was the mushroom spring roll which came with vermicelli, carrots, and a mix of herbs. The spring roll was crispy and fresh, with a delicious crunch. Inside, it was bursting with flavour and so delicious.
Bun bo hue, $14.00: Another thing that I normally would not have ordered… but after having this, I am definitely going to order it when I’m not feeling like a regular pho! Bun bo bue is a type of spicy broth, if I’m not mistaken.

There was a subtle hint of spice, but nothing super spicy that your tongue was on fire or you needed water to pair it with. In addition, there was a hint of slight sweetness that made it too. The noodles were the thick vermicelli ones, which are different than the rice noodles typically served with pho.
DIY Street side platter, $22.00: Another thing that I’ve never ordered from Vietnamese places or seen on menus before! The street side platter comes with a variety of different proteins, greens, vermicelli, and fish sauce. On a side plate, they give you dried rice paper and a bowl of warm water. You are then instructed to dip the dried rice paper into the warm water, and then make your own wrap.

It was a fun experience and all the meats that we had were delicious. I also got to try the pork spring rolls, but I liked the mushroom ones more. It came with pork, beef wrapped in betel leaf, grilled prawn, and grilled chicken. All the meats were delicious and I have no complaints, but my favourite was definitely the grilled chicken!

As we were leaving, I found the washroom to be quite cool so I took a picture to include in this post. There isn’t a female and male washroom, just some private stalls and communal sinks. This set up works in favour of females because the female washrooms are always the ones that are lined up, haha!!!

Anyways, the 3 dishes that we ordered were new to me and I’m glad that I got to try them. The prices are on the pricier side for Vietnamese food, so I would suggest coming here if you’d like something a bit more fancy. Even though it’s pricier, I would say that it’s worth it because the food and quality was great. I can see why this place gets line ups during peak hours.

Yay!

Food: Broken Rice

April 6, 2018

It was a cold winter night, perfect for Vietnamese food! I suggested Thai’s Saigon Bistro, but Cinnamon wanted to go to Broken Rice instead, which was fine by me since I have wanted to try it. It’s located on the same block too.
The restaurant was pretty clean and had some gentle classical music playing.
Spring rolls, $7.50: Sangria, Cocoa, and I shared the spring rolls which came with minced pork, taro root, mushrooms, and more. They came very crunchy- piping hot and fresh!
House pho, $9.95: Cocoa and I both had the house pho, which was delicious! It came with a decent amount of rare beef, brisket, and beef balls. The broth was perfect and not too salty.
Grilled beef short ribs, $11.50: Sangria went with the grilled beef short ribs, which she thought was delicious as well albeit pretty salty. It was a big portion and she ended up packing some of it home.
Vegetarian vermicelli: Cinnamon ordered the vegetarian vermicelli which came with fried tofu and vegetarian spring rolls. She had no complaints about it either!

Overall, it was a good first visit to Broken Rice and I would come back again for the pho and crispy spring rolls!

Yay!

Food: Basil Garden

January 5, 2018

I’ve been running low on new food posts, so the boyfriend and I decided to look for some restaurants that I could blog about. We’ve driven by Basil Garden numerous times (if not everyday haha) and keep saying that we should go for the past year since the Yelp reviews were pretty good.

Basil Garden is located on Renfrew and Broadway, in a small strip mall where Mr. Sub is. Walking in, the decor was pretty modern and nice. Everything felt very clean and it was a lot nicer than the usual Vietnamese places we eat at.

Spring rolls, $6: The boyfriend was quite hungry that night, so we ordered some spring rolls to start. There was quite a generous amount – 4 spring rolls for $6 is a great price!

They were fresh, crunchy and delicious! We have high expectations for Vietnamese spring rolls thanks to Le Petit Saigon and these were excellent as well.

Large pho w/ rare beef and brisket, $10: At $10, the price was a bit higher than we were used to but this place is also a bit fancier. With that said, the boyfriend really enjoyed it. The broth was super clear but very flavourful.

The portion was HUGE, with lots of noodles and beef!

Pork patty & spring roll vermicelli: The pork patty was different than the usual places I go to. It was slightly sweeter and the texture was different. Pork patty usually has an even texture and consistency because it’s processed (I think? Not sure) but this one didn’t seem that processed.

Like think of a more-processed hot dog sausage compared to a breakfast sausage. But I guess this is a good thing because it’s healthier, I was just expecting this style of pork patty.

One last thing to mention is how clean their sauces are! This probably means that they clean out their sauce tubes quite often? It was pretty busy that night so I’m sure that the sauces get used a lot.

Anyways, we enjoyed our visit to Basil Garden and will be back! It’s a good option for Vietnamese food in the area. As the boyfriend says, he would come back here if he wanted something close and didn’t have any cash for Thai Son. Agreed!

Yay!

Tasty Pho

February 26, 2017

When I was in my third year at university, my friends and I would frequently come to Taste of Asia for a cheap and delicious bowl of pho, although laden with so much MSG that copious amounts of water would not suffice. We came here so frequently that the servers recognized us, and we would often engage in conversations with them!

Unfortunately, they changed owners within the past year or so. Taste of Asia became rebranded as Tasty Pho, and they underwent renovations as well. It is no longer a hole in the wall style place but still seems to be family-run. There’s a brand new coat of paint, some big TV screens, new tables and new chairs.

The boyfriend and I came here twice in the last 4 months. Both times, it was because Wah Lun next door was really busy and we didn’t want to wait for a table. The service here is quick and it is never that busy, although the food is decent.

#28, Pho Tai, Nam, Sach, $7.95: This bowl of pho came with rare beef, flank, and tripe. There was a decent amount of meat and tripe. The broth was delicious and fragrant, although a bit more on the salty side. I loved that there was a lot of chopped green onions as well. Overall, very delicious and comforting.

Grilled pork and spring rolls w/ vermicelli, $9.50: The pork was very flavourful with a good amount of lemongrass flavour to it. They do a great job of grilling meats and it’s always very flavourful w a slightly grilled and sweet taste.

The spring rolls were fresh and crunchy as well. The side of veggies were also really fresh, just like my pho.
Overall, Tasty Pho does live up to its’ name and is pretty tasty! Out of the two other Vietnamese places we eat at in this neighbourhood (Coconut Tree and Thai’s Saigon Bistro), Tasty Pho has risen to the top of our list.

Yay!

Pho D’Lite

November 24, 2016

A new pho restaurant has popped up in Burnaby! Well, not thaaat new, but it opened in the past year beside the Whole Foods in the Solo district. The name of the restaurant is Pho D’Lite, such a cute and punny name!

After hanging out at one of my friend’s condos at solo (such breathtaking views up there!), the boyfriend and I were starving. We didn’t want to drive anywhere because we were that hungry, and warm, comforting pho seemed like the perfect option.
pho-dlite-burnaby-vancouver-brentwoodThe restaurant was very clean, new, and spacious. In particular, we awed over the beautiful plate art wall that was behind us. It looks like they glued a bunch of Asian plates into a nice pattern. I can certainly spot some plate patterns that my family and relatives own!
pho-dlite-burnaby-vancouver-brentwood-review-soloP4, Pho Tai, Large, $9.95: There are many different pho combinations to choose from, as with most Vietnamese places. The boyfriend chose p4, which just comes with rare beef. There was a pretty generous amount of rare beef, as well as onions.
pho-dlite-burnaby-vancouver-brentwood-beefP7, Pho Nam Bo Vien, Large, $9.95: I ordered the opposite of the boyfriend, aka all cooked beef – beef balls and beef brisket. As with the other bowl, they were pretty generous on the meat toppings and onions.

The broth itself was comforting and flavourful, not too salty or light. Each of the bowls also came with a HUGE amount of noodles. In retrospect, I should have ordered the small because I did not finish the large bowl, especially with the generous toppings of meat.

Pho D’Lite is a pretty solid pho joint that I would definitely come back to if I was in the area. Service is quick and friendly, while the pho is comforting and comes with generous portions of both noodles and meat.
