Brown Bites – Uncle Fatih’s

September 29, 2019

Brown Bites is a mini series on my blog featuring places the fiance has tried without me, so it wouldn’t be my own review. Why the name Brown, you ask? It is named after the Japanese LINE character, Brown. Brown is a cute, shy, emotionless cartoon bear but secretly full of love, and we adore him to pieces!

The fiance was craving some pizza, so off we went to Uncle Fatih’s. Uncle Fatih’s is a popular pizza joint with a few locations in the city.

I remember thinking it was called Uncle Faith’s and being mindblown when I found out it was Uncle Fatih’s. Anyone else?!

You can order by the slice or a whole pizza. They have quite a few selections, all of which looked like delicious, greasy, unhealthy goodness.

The fiance went with 2 slices that day. Uncle Fatih’s didn’t have the different types of pizza listed on the glass, so we aren’t really sure which he ordered.

As expected, the slices were delicious and filling. Uncle Fatih’s isn’t something you should have often, but it’s good to treat yourself sometimes!

Boiling Point – Main Street

September 25, 2019

After being the last person in the city to try Boiling Point Burnaby earlier this year (okay I may be exaggerating a little!), the fiance and I went to the Boiling Point on Main Street in Vancouver. I usually go to the one by Metrotown which is always crazy busy, so I wanted to see how this location was.

First off, the Main Street location was a lot calmer. Boiling Point replaced a Taiwanese restaurant called Shang Pin which I wrote about, and ended up closing down a mere few months later.

Tea: Since we came at lunch, we each had a free iced tea! You can pick between green or black. Both are really sweetened and reminded me of McDonald’s sweet tea.

Beef hot pot: I ordered my go-to, the beef hot pot. It was delicious! I love the satay broth. It came with a lot of veggies, tofu, tomato, corn, cuttlefish and more.

Tonkotsu miso hot pot: The fiance ordered the tonkotsu miso with level 4/5 spice. He didn’t find it spicy at all though, and neither did I. There was a side of sauces so he ended up using lots of the hot sauce to spice it up.

Lack of spiciness aside, he enjoyed the flavour of the broth. It came with chashu pork, shrimp, fish filet, udon, tomato, corn, raw egg, and more. He was very full from his hot pot at the end of the meal.

We both enjoyed our visit to Boiling Point and would definitely come back. Compared to the Metrotown/Burnaby location, it is a lot less hectic here with a shorter line.

The quality and taste is both the same though, so I would go back to either depending on which location was more convenient that particular day.

Yay!

Thai’s Saigon Bistro – Revisit

September 22, 2019

Thai’s Saigon Bistro has been one of my staple Vietnamese restaurants for more than 5 years now, ever since they opened! The food is consistently delicious, the family that runs this place is friendly, and it is in the neighbourhood.

It has been over 5 years since my last post, so I figured that warranted a revisit. I’ve noticed that the portion sizes have gotten smaller since.

Pho with rare beef and tripe: The pho portion here is quite small, which is my only complaint about this place. That being said, I still come here quite regularly so I clearly don’t mind that much.

The broth is flavorful and comforting. I don’t ever feel thirsty or lethargic after. If you’re really hungry, I would recommend the large instead of a small. Their large is probably the average size of pho elsewhere.

Chicken banh mi: The chicken banh mi here is amazing. Since the pho is quite small, the fiance and I usually split a side of the chicken banh mi which fills us up. The baguette is freshly toasted, and comes with this garlicky mayo sauce which is sooo good.

In addition, the chicken is very juicy and full of delicious grilled flavour. It’s a must get here. The veggies are also always very fresh.

Pork banh mi: During one of our visits, the fiance decided to switch it up and try the pork banh mi instead. The lemongrass pork was delicious and grilled perfectly as well.

My only complaint here would be the very small portions sizes for pho. The portion sizes for their other dishes such as the banh mi or vermicelli dishes aren’t as small. But everything is so delicious and the service is always very pleasant, so we will continue to come here as one of our top picks for Vietnamese food.

Sushi Ville – Revist

September 18, 2019

I came to Sushiville with Cocoa a bit over two years ago and wrote a review on it here. We were looking for a place to have lunch so I suggested coming back here since it’s been awhile.

Something odd about Sushiville is that they have a very big sign on the wall warning customers of the wait. They say that they do not “prepare in advance like other sushi places do”, which doesn’t make sense to me because why wouldn’t you want your ingredients chopped up beforehand? But since we already knew about the long waits here, we were prepared.

Tuna and salmon combo bento box: Cocoa’s bento box was a really good deal for the price. She comes here more often and said they used to have gyozas instead of edamame beans.

Anyways, the bento box came with 4 pieces sashimi, 3 nigiri pieces, edamame, tempura, beef teriyaki with veggies (no rice), and salad. The beef teriyaki reminded us more of a Korean style, with sweet galbi sauce instead of teriyaki.

Cocoa enjoyed the bento box with no complaints. It was too much for one meal so she ended up packing some back. But a very good deal for the price, I wish I ordered this too!

Scallop oshi: This isn’t something I would normally order, but Cocoa wanted it so we shared. It was quite pricey at $16 for the roll, hence why we split it!

Although pricey, it was delicious. The scallop was fresh and tasted delicious when seared. The tobiko was crunchy and added a nice snap to it. The dry ice is a fun touch in the beginning and lasts about 7 minutes before it goes out!

House roll: I was disappointed with my house roll because it was pretty tiny. Usually, house rolls are larger than a normal roll.

In addition, the tamago was the worst tamago I’ve had. It was a pale yellow/almost clear white colour, and very flavourless. The texture was also very rubbery. Gross.

I also ordered a salmon and avocado roll, which they forgot about. Since they had that giant poster warning about slow prep time, I thought they were making it still but nope. I ended up just cancelling it cause I didn’t want to wait and because Elephant Garden is just next door, hehe.

I have mixed thoughts about Sushiville, because some things were hit or miss. Cocoa comes here more often and noted the prices increased as well.

But, they do have some positives. The dry ice displays they have are pretty cool and fun to boomerang for Instagram. I would say come here for the big bento boxes or special rolls for the dry ice only.

Yay…ish? Not bad enough to be a meh though.

The Dolar Shop Hot Pot

September 15, 2019

No, I did not spell dollar wrong! Well, I did, but this is the way dollar is spelled at Dolar Shop. Despite its name, The Dolar Shop is not cheap! It should be called The Hundred Dolar Shop ?.

Anyways, The Dolar Shop is a hot pot restaurant that opened up last year inside Lansdowne Center. The fiance and I have been wanting to try this place for a couple months, and finally were able to go one afternoon!

The Dolar Shop was unlike any other hot pot place in Vancouver. It was the fanciest hot pot place I have seen, and the prices definitely reflected that. After reading reviews, we came expecting that our lunch was going to be quite expensive.

Service was great from the moment we stepped inside the restaurant. After asking if this was our first visit, the hostess explained the process and how the pricing works. When we were seated, we were greeted by our server who was attentive and friendly throughout. She also explained the process in even further detail to us, the popular items, the soup bases, and even where the washrooms were.

We were also given large bibs to protect our shirts. As well, since this was a fancy place with a lot of their clientele wearing expensive designer purses and jackets, they also had chair covers to project your clothes.

The Dolar Shop has individual hot pots, in which each person chooses their soup base. Then, you order the raw ingredients which you share with everyone at the table.

For an extra $4, you get access to their sauce bar, appetizers, and fruits which was like a mini buffet before your meal.

Herbal mushroom soup: I wasn’t feeling like a meat broth since I would be putting meat into the hot pot, so I went with the herbal mushroom soup. The soup was clear yet flavourful, and had some herbal flavour to it.

I found it very comforting and reminded me of a homemade soup. It also came with an assortment of different Asian mushrooms.

Pork leg bone broth: The fiance’s soup was clear but flavourful as well. Surprisingly, he preferred my mushroom broth more because it was more savoury.

On to the hot pot ingredients! Since it was our first time, we didn’t really know how big the portion sizes would be. We ended up ordering way too much food and had trouble finishing everything.

Handsliced short rib (Canada AAA): The short rib was amazing, although quite pricey at $30 but we came here knowing it would be an expensive meal. The quality of the short rib was excellent though.

We also ordered some bean curd and tofu. We probably wouldn’t get the tofu again since we ordered so much food.

There was a surprising amount of napa cabbage and mushrooms. They were quite generous with these portions and all tasted fresh.

Hand sliced boneless wagyu plate: The fiance noticed this after we placed the order, so we added it afterwards.

We probably didn’t need to since the other beef plate was enough for 2 people. But this one was delicious too and there was a special promotion for it that day.

Cuttlefish: The cuttlefish would have been better if there was more than the two of us. It ended up being a lot of cuttlefish and we were trying to finish it up at the end.

However, the cuttlefish was fresh and soaked up a lot of the broth flavour.

Shrimp pate: I knew we had to get this as soon as I saw it! The shrimp pate came with water chestnut, which was slightly crunchy. Going back to the great service, our server noticed that I wasn’t sure how to put this in my hot pot and ended up helping us form it into bite sized balls.

The shrimp was bouncy and fresh. The water chestnut gave it a fun, slightly crunchy texture to it too! We’d definitely order this again.

Hand made noodles: We wanted to see how their hand made noodles held up! They were deliciously chewy with a nice bounce to it.

They also had colourful hand made noodles, but I read reviews that the regular ones were a better deal because it tasted the same.

Soft serve: At the end of the meal, they gave us a complimentary soft serve! The fiance really enjoyed the soft serve, noting the quality of it.

We left very satisfied and full with The Dolar Shop. Although it was pricey, the service and quality of food was great. It wouldn’t be a place I would come to regularly because I’m not made of money, but definitely a nice treat once in awhile.
