Joey’s Burnaby – Revisit

September 17, 2018

It was one of those Friday nights where we wanted to eat out, but did not know where to go. Since we were in the area, we decided on going to Joey Burnaby, located in Madison Center. I came here back in December last year, so thought I would write an updated review on it!

We were glad that there wasn’t a wait, although most of the tables were full. We got a high table spot in the back near the bar. Our server was quite busy but she did her best to check on us and was attentive.

Shrimp pesto flatbread: I remember this being pretty good last time I ordered it, but this time it just felt greasy and unhealthy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a health snob… just that I was craving something lighter that day! It seemed like the flatbread was deep fried first, similar to how Pizza Hut fries their dough.

Since I wanted something light, this was a bit disappointing. This would be better if you were craving something greasy or if you wanted a pizza.

Fish tacos: I’m glad that the boyfriend picked this because it was a lot lighter than the flatbread! They were tasty fish tacos and came jam packed with vegetable toppings. I would order this again if I’m feeling like having something light.

Boba Monster

September 14, 2018

A couple of weeks ago, I was meeting up with my cousins and they suggested on going to Boba Monster. It is one of their go-to bubble tea places. I’m glad that I tried it because it was delicious!

Strawberry mango slush with pearls: I can’t remember what my cousins ordered, so I’ll just describe my own. The slush had a nice consistency and was the perfect sweetness for me.

There was a good balance of fresh mango and strawberry. In addition, the pearls were sweet and chewy.
Mango sago: The mango sago was one of their specialty drinks. It was a fresh mango slush with mango chunks, mango stars, and sago. Maki opted to get it without whipped cream. She didn’t have any complaints about it, and I thought that the mango stars looked really pretty inside the drink!

Matcha red bean: Nigiri ordered the matcha red bean, another one of their specialty drinks! The boyfriend has been ordering this the past couple of times now too. It came with matcha slush and red bean, topped with mochi, whipped cream, and more red bean.

I would recommend this if you’re a fan of red bean! Red bean is just average to me so I wouldn’t order it myself. But I enjoyed the matcha portion of it.
After a couple visits, we discovered that Skip The Dishes offers free delivery over $20!!! How convenient (and bad) is that! We took advantage of this deal while babysitting my cousins, because it’s only worth it if you have 4+ people. Otherwise, you would have to pay $4.75 delivery fee plus tips.

Boba Monster has not yet disappointed and I can see us coming here more often for our bubble tea fix. Especially during board games night, we can take advantage and order it with friends. Service is friendly and quick too!

Yay!

Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano

September 11, 2018

Following an eventful and happy day of Sangria and Lager’s proposal (congrats to them!!! YAY!), we had a celebratory dinner at Carmelo’s in West Vancouver because it was near Whytecliff Park, where Lager popped the question.

It was a top secret mission and Lager entrusted me to finding a nice but reasonably priced place to eat afterwards. I relied on the likes of Yelp and Google Reviews which has not failed yet!

Since we were unsure of how long we would be at Whytecliff, Lager suggested that we make a late reservation to give us time if necessary.  At first, the restaurant told us they didn’t have any earlier times but ended up calling back to offer us a spot 1 hour earlier than our reservation time which was perfect for us.

Complimentary bread: We were given two baskets of bread among the 7 of us. There were two types: your regular baguette style bread, and another type which had different types of herbs. I enjoyed the latter because I could taste some rosemary, along with others.

It came with an unique whipped butter, which one of us guessed was infused with red pepper? We aren’t really sure but it was tasty and we cleaned it all up!
Ricotta cheese on toast: As an appetizer, Steak and Sushi both shared the ricotta cheese on toast. They said it was simple and easy to recreate at home, but they enjoyed it nonetheless. Look at how much ricotta cheese is on each piece!
Canadese pizza: One thing that the boyfriend and I disagree on is whether or not pineapples belong on pizza. I’m going to risk losing some readers by saying that I believe pineapples belong on pizza!

Anyways, since we were sharing, I suggested we get the Canadese pizza because he would like it more than a pizza with pineapples. Relationships are about compromise :).

Anyways, the pizza was tasty. You can see their oven freshly baking the pizza to perfection. It was cheesy, and had a satisfyingly amount of toppings.
Lobster and crab ravioli: This was the daily special which Lager could not pass up! It sounded delicious and a few of us considered ordering this, but in the end, only Lager did.

He had no complaints about it. The sauce was rich and creamy, making it pretty filling.
Linguini Alle Vongole: Sangria’s linguini came with clams, garlic, white wine, and cream. It looked very delicious, and she said it was really good!

I completely failed in taking pictures of everyone else’s food! We were all too busy having fun and it was only until I sat down to write this post, that I noticed there wasn’t a picture of the spaghetti and meatballs that we shared. =(

Carmelo’s is a very cozy, intimate and romantic restaurant (without the pretentiousness that could sometimes come along with these types of restaurants). I would like to highlight the impeccable service that night. Our server and bussers kept coming around every 5-10 minutes, filling our water, clearing plates, making sure everything was okay.

They were all super friendly and made a happy occasion even better. I was very impressed! Carmelo’s would be a great place for date night. You could also take a stroll at Ambleside Beach which is a block down afterwards.

Yay!

Myst Asian Fusion

September 6, 2018

After seeing my friends always posting about Myst, I felt like the only person in this city who hasn’t tried it before! My friends have been recommending this place to us, so one evening, the boyfriend and I decided to go and see what we were missing out on. Spoiler alert: a lot!

I read reviews that it was hard to find parking here, and I would agree with that. The first time we came, it was super busy which was not surprising at all.

Luckily, since we only had two people, we were given a spot right away! On our second visit with my parents, I made sure to call ahead with a reservation. I should also mention that they will only seat you once everyone has arrived at the restaurant, and if you’re 10+ minutes late for your reso, it will automatically be cancelled.
Calamari: The food came out within minutes of ordering, it was quite impressive! Cheese recommended the squid tentacles here, so we had to give it a try. They were very fresh and crispy, and fully seasoned with Taiwanese style spices. If you’re craving squid tentacles, I would definitely recommend ordering them here!
Chicken nuggets and rice: Again, the boyfriend’s dish came out so fast! It came with a pretty big basket of Taiwanese chicken nuggets. Just like the squid tentacles, the chicken nuggets were super fresh and crispy. They had the signature Taiwanese spices which are so addicting!

I really enjoyed the vegetarian side dish, which was some sort of chilled marinated tofu and wood ear mushroom. It reminded me of the ‘jai’ that you can purchase at TNT.
Taiwanese beef noodles: A long time has passed since I had Taiwanese beef noodles, it just seems so hard to find these days! I ordered it with thick noodle for an extra $1.00.

This was super comforting and satisfied my Taiwanese soup noodle craving. There was a good ratio of preserved veggies and green onions. The broth was flavourful and the thick noodles were deliciously dense and chewy.

As for the beef, oh my GOSH was it delicious. It was so incredibly tender!

Needless to say, we were very impressed with Myst and can see why it’s so busy and popular. Service was very fast and efficient too. I know where to go for my next Taiwanese craving (which probably will be soon because the beef noodles are LIFE!)

Yay!

East One Seafood Restaurant

September 3, 2018

The boyfriend and I didn’t know where to go for lunch one day, so we decided to go to East One because it’s been a few years since we came here. East One has gone through many name changes and possibly owner changes throughout the year. Growing up as a kid, I remember coming here but it was a different name.

I also did a review of this place for their late night snacks back when it was called Venice Garden Seafood Restaurant – not sure if the owners are the same or not though.

The cuisine has always remained the same though – Hong Kong/Chinese comfort food.

We definitely over ordered but we brought the rest of it back for his little brother, who likes the food here!

Spaghetti bolognese: I’ve been ordering this dish for the past 15 years or so of my life (minus the 3 years I couldn’t have dairy), and don’t plan on switching anytime soon. It’s my comfort food and it usually tastes the same, but there are some restaurants who don’t make it as well. This is the boyfriend’s little brother’s comfort food too and he is quite picky about it, but he likes the one at East One so I ordered it.

It did not disappoint! There was a generous portion of meat, and there was enough sauce to evenly distribute it with the noodles. It was also cheesy as well. It was a delicious carb heavy treat!

Pepper beef with crispy chow mein: Another classic comfort food! This was a pretty big portion which we ended up bringing back home as well.

There was a generous portion of beef. Meanwhile, the sauce was peppery and delicious. The chow mein was crispy too. Overall, no complaints about this!

Deep fried squid: This isn’t a traditional comfort food at Chinese/Hong Kong style restaurants and more of a Taiwanese dish, but the boyfriend’s family loves the squid here so we gave it a try. The batter was fresh and crunchy, with a good amount of squid.

Chinese/Hong Kong style restaurants are plentiful in Vancouver. East One is a decent option, at least for the things that we ordered. They also have many servers working so the service is quick and efficient.

An added bonus is that they are not cash only!
Yay!
