Curiously Carmen

H&P Noodle House Burnaby

April 29, 2023

Ever since it opened nine years ago, Thai’s Saigon Bistro has been our go-to Vietnamese place in this area. We were quite sad when they closed down but I wasn’t too surprised as the owners were getting older and probably wanted a well deserved retirement. I wish we had known they were closing beforehand, so we could have went one last time!

H&P Noodle House replaced Saigon Bistro a bit after, and has both Vietnamese and Thai food. This is their second location, with the first one in Port Coquitlam.

House special pho: My parents and I ordered the same thing, their house special pho. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy the pho. The broth was pretty bland and flat. In a city where there are so many good pho restaurants, this bowl did not hit the spot.

Vermicelli bowl: The husband couldn’t decide between trying their Vietnamese or Thai food, but decided on a vermicelli bowl. He found it to be pretty meh and disappointing as well.

Unfortunately, we didn’t enjoy our lunch here and would go elsewhere in the area if we wanted Vietnamese food. However, I’d be willing to give this place another try if someone suggested it, or maybe perhaps their Thai food is better as it seemed like the restaurant was Thai-owned. Since H&P replaced Saigon Bistro, we’ve been going to Pho Mr Do instead.

Travel: Harry Potter Studio Tour (Watford, UK)

April 14, 2023

Back in the fall, the husband and I went to London! My first London post was on the Resident Soho hotel, and now this second post will be on the Harry Potter Studio Tour. This was the highlight of our trip and I still can’t believe I was able to go to the main filming location and see some original props and set.

It was truly a magical day and one to remember forever!

The original Hogwarts Express! AHHH!

Tickets: The most important tip to mention is that tickets must be bought in advance, at least 3-4 months! We learned the hard way, when about three weeks prior to our trip we decided to buy our tickets. Everything was sold out for our dates. Through our digging, we found out that you can still book through tour companies that generally had poor reviews (late shuttle bus, miscommunication, limited time, etc). The tickets were around 4x more expensive which was so stupid, but we had no choice as this was our top activity here.

We begrudgingly purchased the tickets and were just grateful we still had a way to visit. Before we slept, we decided to check the website again and LO AND BEHOLD, *ONE* time slot showed up the first full day we were there. We jumped on the opportunity and purchased the ticket from the main website, and cancelled the stupid tour bus. This was a pretty annoying situation so my takeaway is to buy tickets months in advance – not just weeks!

Location: Although the website and everything says “London”, the filming studio is actually about 1-1.5 hour train ride outside of London, in a city called Watford. Getting there was quite easy. We took the tube to Euston Station, which is a major transport hub in London to travel to the rest of the UK.

From Euston Station in London, we took one of the commuter trains (which has washrooms, charging outlets, etc) to Watford Junction. The main attraction in Watford is the Harry Potter studio, so you can not miss all the signs at Watford Junction.

Free shuttle bus from Watford Junction ft a short video with Tom Felton!

There are free double decker shuttle busses every 5-10 minutes to the studio, which is another 15-20 minute ride. The double decker shuttle busses reminded me of the Knight bus, and are powered by Muggle electricity. Overall, getting there from London was a breeze!

Outside: The magic starts when you are outside! As you walk to the studio, the walls are made up of the Daily Prophet newspaper clippings. The first prop you will see are some of the original Wizard’s Chess pieces!

Getting in: There wasn’t a line when we arrived at 12pm on a weekday, but as we left around 5pm we started to see a line forming. Tickets were quickly scanned.

There is also a free coat check, although they mentioned that part of the studio is outside so you may want to hold on to your jackets as you can’t come back out to the coat check if you change your mind.

Outdoor section of the studio! Spot the Herbology classroom set in the back 🙂

Food: As mentioned in the ticket fiasco above, we only had one time slot which was later in the day at 2pm. This actually worked out for us as it gave us time to slowly make our way to the studio, and we had time to eat beforehand.

Before the tour, there is a food hall and two cafes. We had lunch at the food hall and the food was alright. The takeout boxes were in the shape of the Knight Bus which was a cool touch!

Butterbeer break outside!

Halfway through the tour, there is also the Backlot Cafe which is another food hall outdoors with Butterbeer. You can enjoy your meal with a view of the Privet Drive, Herbology classroom, and Knight Bus sets!

Beginning of the tour: They allow people in by groups of around 75~. At your ticket time, you begin to line up at the entrance to the studio tours. Everyone is then shuffled into a large dark waiting room for about 5-10 minutes. When the waiting room is at capacity, a guide will inform you of some rules.

Then, you will all be shuffled into a small theater where you watch a video with some of the actors. At this point, I was getting really impatient because I just wanted to be INSIDE, and also I was not sure if we had to be in this large group the entire time (you don’t!). After the movie ends, you are FINALLY in the first set (I won’t spoil which!) and you are free to walk around at your own pace!

Here is a map of the studio! There is so much to see in every section, and there was no such thing as a boring or bad station to me. I was in awe, soaking in every moment and not believing this was real life.

Here are some photos I took!

The original Griffindor boys dormitory!
Griffindor common room!

In total, we spent about 5~ hours here which is more on the longer side, but I feel like we could have spent 8 hours here!

Out of everything we saw, my top highlight was getting to go inside the original Hogwarts Express!

Inside the original Hogwarts Express!
Animal actors!

I wish that I lived closer to this studio because I would probably come a handful of times each year. They also have different themes or exhibitions sometimes – for example, when we went it was the Death Eaters exhibit so they had scary looking Death Eaters walking around and doing occasional 5 min shows.

This is an absolute must-do day trip for all Harry Potter fans, and worth the 1-1.5 hour trip from London! I would come back in a heart beat and thinking back to this wonderful day brings a smile to my face.

Travel: The Resident Soho Hotel, London UK

April 9, 2023

In the fall last year (2022), the husband and I went to London! It was our first time in Europe, and we were in London for eight days. Looking back, we probably should have split our time there and visited at least two countries. Initially, we were not too impressed with London but after coming back, we found ourselves reflecting on the trip and enjoying it more than we thought!

I haven’t had time to write about our trip until now! During this trip, we also had a few day trips to the Harry Potter studio (a must do for any HP fan), a cute seaside city named Brighton, and the famous university town Cambridge. Hopefully I will also get around to writing those posts soon.

Starting off the London travel series, I will be reviewing our stay at the Resident Soho Hotel!

Image from Google Street view

Location: The main reason we picked this hotel was due to the location, which is located in the busy Soho area. Since it was our first time in London, we wanted to be in the center of the action and for convenience. Originally, we were looking into the Covent Garden area but the prices were a bit too high. There are also other Resident hotels in London.

Image from Google – Half a block from Tottenham Court Road station Elizabeth Line entrance

The location was great! We were extremely close to Tottenham Court Road station, which is a big tube station with many lines. The station has many entrances, and we were within half a block from the Elizabeth Line entrance. The Elizabeth Line is a newly opened tube line and has easy access to Heathrow Airport.

Five minute walk to Chinatown!

In addition to the tube, we were also within walking distance to Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, and Oxford Street! Soho is known for its many bars and pubs. After work and in the evenings, you’ll find a lot of people sharing a pint on the streets. Most of the pubs have window ledges where people are standing around and chatting.

Hobson’s: Our favourite fish and chips place, a 3 min walk from the Resident!

In addition, there are many restaurants even within a 3 minute walk from The Resident! Our favourite was Hobson’s Fish and Chips and we went there a few times.

Lazy dinner & next day lunch haul from Tesco Express, a few steps from the hotel

There is also a Tesco Express, which is a small grocery store that was a few steps away from the hotel (Think Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada). This was very convenient as we picked up snacks, fruit, breakfast items, ready to eat sandwiches, etc almost everyday!

Room: We stayed in the small double room and found it decent enough. As expected being in a big city, the room was quite small and compact – similar to the hotel room sizes in Tokyo for comparison.

The main adjustment was that the double bed was quite small. The husband has wide shoulders and one side of the bed is against the wall and windowsill, so I often felt squished in the corner. However, over the nights I began to like the windowsill. It gave me some extra room to plop my leg on in the cramped bed, and the cold wood was refreshing.

The room also had a small sink, microwave, mini fridge, and coffee maker (more on the coffee maker in the cons list!).

The washroom was an average size. The small double rooms only have a walk-in shower, no bath tub which would have been nice to soak in after walking all day. Overall, the room was cramped but it did the job. We also appreciated that it was sound proof, we didn’t hear any people in the hallway, doors closing etc. The Soho area would get pretty loud at night with all the pubs and bars, but this did not impact our sleep.

Here is a pros and cons list of this hotel!

Pros:

-Convenient location, as mentioned above
-Sound proof
-Clean, somewhat modern
-Service: The front desk staff were very friendly. After checking out and right before heading to the airport, my time of the month came and I had asked if they had any emergency feminine products. The lady went to the backroom and one of the staff gave me hers from her purse which I really appreciated! I was thinking that they would have some supplied from the hotel instead, so that was really kind of her to help me out.

Nine minute walk to Picadilly Circus and eleven minute walk to Trafalgar Square

Cons:
-This isn’t really part of the hotel, but the main con is that the area smelled like concentrated pee constantly. When we were outside, we would inevitable catch a strong whiff of pee which was unsettling. As mentioned above, this area has a lot of pubs and many people gathered on the streets so it’s not surprising. The worst was on the first day when we cut across Soho Square Garden, which is supposedly a nice little garden area. There was a strong urine smell that assaulted our noses and we held our breath until we were gone….

-Amenities: Being in a very central area and a compact hotel, there were no amenities such as a gym, spa, swimming pool, etc. We had already expected this and weren’t disappointed since we did not spend much time at the hotel, but something to keep in mind if that is important for you!

-Coffee maker: The Keurig machine was extremely loud! I’ve used a Keurig many times, but for some reason the one in the room was SO LOUD. I was startled the first time I used it and thought there was loud construction in the other room. This was a con as sometimes I woke up before the husband and wanted to make a coffee, and even though he is a very deep sleeper he would still be woken by how loud it was. Not a huge deal breaker but just something to mention!

A ten minute walk to Leicester Square!

Personally, for us we do not drink much so we think there would be other neighbourhoods that would be a better fit for us next time. Although it was convenient, we would try another neighbourhood that hopefully does not smell like pee constantly.

Overall, our stay at The Resident was pleasant and got the job done. Although the room was pretty tight and cramped, we appreciated that it was sound proof and clean. It was a pretty standard hotel in a convenient location to the tube, restaurants, and other neighbourhoods. The main con, although not a criticism of the hotel, is that the area reeked of urine constantly so there isn’t really much bad to say about The Resident.

North Noodle House

March 12, 2023

In the summer before school started, I wanted to hang out with friends as much as I could before things got really busy. I’ve been hearing about North Noodle House for many years now, but I don’t go to New West much. Frappachino and I were in the area, so we decided to try it out.

North Noodle House is a very small, mom and pop owned restaurant located inside New West skytrain station. There is also a parking complex as well. Apart from North Noodle house, there were a handful of other restaurants, small shops and a Safeway.

Beef noodle soup: It is no surprise that I am a huge fan of soup noodles! I had to try the beef noodle soup, and it did not disappoint. The noodles were handmade in the restaurant, and had the perfect chewy texture.

The beef slices were extremely tender as well. Although the broth looked quite clear, it was very flavourful. Frappachino is not a fan of clear, light broths but he also found it tasty!

Fried noodles: Frappachino ordered the fried noodles, which was like a stir fry. The noodles here were wider and flatter. I would have liked this type of noodle for my soup as well. He also enjoyed his noodles.

Beef roll: To share, we split a beef roll. It’s been awhile since I had a beef roll, but these were delicious. They were lightly pan fried which made the outside crispy.

Overall, we left very impressed with the food at North Noodle House. If this place was closer or I was in the area, I would go pretty often. It is a gem!

Grand Crystal Seafood Restaurant

March 4, 2023

Back in the summer, Frappachino and I decided to try dimsum at Grand Crystal, which is located inside Crystal Mall. They had opened up earlier last year, and the owners had previously owned another Chinese restaurant in Vancouver which I forgot the name of now.

Since this visit is from awhile ago, I don’t remember all the details!

Prawn dumpling: Unfortunately, I don’t remember if this was tasty or not anymore. But I think I would remember if it tasted bad, so I guess it was decent!

Fried glutinous rice dumpling: This is one of my favourite dim sum dishes but I don’t order it that much due to how oily it is! Again, I don’t remember if this was good or bad but I think it was ok? Lol!

Eggplant stuffed with shrimp paste: This is the only dish out of the three that we ordered that I actually remember! Frappachino and I weren’t planning on ordering this, but we saw the table next to us order it. I am pretty neutral with eggplant, and didn’t expect too much from this. But we were really surprised at how good this was and we both loved it!

Firstly, the portion was quite big! As you can tell from the photo, they gave us a whole eggplant cut in half. The shrimp was tasty and the batter was crunchy and fresh. To top it off, the sweet chili sauce on top was delicious!

Overall, we had a delicious and satisfying lunch at Grand Crystal. I have been meaning to come back and bring others here for the shrimp eggplant dish. I hope that it’s consistent here and will be just as good the next time.
