Gram Cafe and Pancakes – Brentwood

June 1, 2022

The husband and I have been eyeing Gram Cafe since they opened in Canada. We loved the fluffy pancakes in Japan, having been to A Happy Pancake in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Fluffy pancakes aren’t as common in Canada, so we were excited to try it when Gram Cafe finally opened at the new Amazing Brentwood!

Gram Cafe is a chain cafe from Japan, which originated in Osaka. They have been slowly opening up a few locations around Vancouver. This review will be for the Brentwood location. At the time of writing, there is also one in Aberdeen Center and in East Vancouver on Kingsway.

Gram Cafe is located on the street level of the Amazing Cafe, entering through the outside. It is across from Sephora and H&M. As a general rule, I try not to visit restaurants immediately upon opening (usually I like to wait a few months for the restaurant to iron out the kinks) but we were too excited this time around.

The cafe was tastefully decorated and felt spacious. However, I found the chairs to be a bit uncomfortable.

We ended up waiting a really long time for our pancakes. I also noticed that the table next to us, who were here first, did not receive their pancakes until after us (when they ordered the same thing). This wasn’t that surprising considering it’s a new place, and more on that soon below.

Fluffy pancakes: I went with the fluffy pancakes and ordered whipped cream and strawberries as sides. I found the fluffy pancakes to be alright, but definitely not comparable to the ones in Japan. They weren’t as jiggly here, when I shook my plate the pancakes didn’t jiggle. Taste wise, they were not bad. For the price, I probably wouldn’t order again.

Apple and tea cream pancakes: Surprisingly, the husband didn’t get fluffy pancakes! He changed his mind last minute when he saw the Earl Grey whipped cream, which the fluffy pancakes didn’t come with.

As mentioned above, the wait was really long for both our dishes. To add to it, my pancakes came about twenty minutes before the husband’s. At first, I only had a bite but then my food was getting cold and I was getting hungry, so we ended up sharing it together. Also as mentioned, even though we sat down after, the table before us didn’t get their fluffy pancakes first.

The husband thought that the pancakes themselves were nothing special, but the Earl Grey whipped cream was delicious.

All in all, Gram Cafe definitely had some growing pains to experience as with most new restaurants, so I won’t be too harsh on them. By now, it’s been half a year since they opened so hopefully the wait and flow has improved. Although decent, we both found it to be overpriced for what it was. I think we will save our fluffy pancakes experience when Japan opens up to tourists again (without having to go on a group tour).

Bon Chaz – Revisit

July 6, 2021

Oops, I took an inadvertent break from blogging over the past couple of weeks. We have been getting in the full swing of wedding planning, seeing friends again with restrictions opening up, and I’ve been spending what time I have left reading (or resting) instead of writing. I have a backlog of restaurants from over a month ago which I will slowly make my way writing!

Back in my student days, Bon Chaz was my go-to spot for lunch. The sandwiches were fresh, delicious, and affordable on my student budget. It’s been awhile since I came to Bon Chaz and since I was in the area picking up our wedding rings, I decided to stop by.

It seems in the recent years since I’ve been here, Bon Chaz focuses on corporate catering more. They closed their Main Street location, and their website and cafe promotes their catering heavily. I should have seen that as a warning sign.

Tuna sandwich: This sandwich was definitely not like how it used to be and was disappointing. Even without my expectations, it was ok at best.

They used to bake their bread fresh in store daily, and I looked forward to the scent of freshly baked bread each time I used to come here. They don’t bake their bread fresh in this cafe anymore.

In addition, they used to have this delicious, fresh baguette for their tuna sandwich that I was looking forward to this time. I was disappointed that it was just two slices of sourdough.

The sandwich filling itself was ok at best. Just your average tuna with some chili powder so it had some spice, plus a slice of melted cheese.

What the tuna baguette used to look like!

Here is a photo of what the tuna baguette used to look like 4 years ago from my previous review. It was way tastier too.

I’ve definitely had better at Bon Chaz but it seems like they don’t really care about the cafe operation anymore. That is disappointing because it used to be so delicious.

Minus Cake Boutique

May 19, 2021

Minus Cake Boutique is a dessert cafe that opened a bit over a year ago. They are located by Kingsway and Boundary Road, next to Sharetea. I actually haven’t noticed Minus Cake Boutique before, but have heard about it on social media. I always thought it was in Burnaby.

Screenshot from Google Maps, next to Sharetea

It was the fiance’s birthday (this post is super late because I haven’t been motivated to write food posts lately), and Sangria and Lager surprised us with an UberEats delivery from Minus!

Minus specializes in cake and bubble tea. The cake comes in a plastic sphere that sits on top of the bubble tea drink. I haven’t seen other cafe stores offer something like this yet.

Combo Pandan Pineapple Coconut Cake: This was delicious! The drink was a fizzy kiwi lemonade, with fresh kiwi pulp inside. I really enjoyed the drink and it was good quality. The pandan pineapple coconut cake was equally as delicious as well.

The cake was part mousse, and part regular cake (sorry I don’t know the term….lol not a baker). The flavour of the cake was Asian style, light and slightly sweet. The pineapple and coconut went really well together and I would get this again.

Brown Sugar Hojicha Mochi Cake: The second dessert Sangria and Lager ordered for us was a chocolate style one! The drink had high quality, smooth chocolate in it. I would describe it as a high quality chocolate milk.

The hojicha mochi cake was delicious as well! There were some pieces of chewy mochi inside. The hojicha flavour was strong and delicious too.

All in all, we really enjoyed the surprise from Minus Cake Boutique and am glad that Sangria and Lager introduced us to it. I would recommend it as the perfect birthday treat, you get a bubble tea and personal sized cake on top! The quality of the cup and plastic sphere were sturdy, so no worries about the sphere falling off.

Milksha – Two Visits

March 19, 2021

There are so many new bubble tea places that it is hard to keep track of. I certainly don’t keep track of bubble tea places because it seems like there is one popping up every day. I usually rely on word of mouth or social media (although I was seeing Sun Tea very hyped up on social media but it turned out to be so bad), which is how I heard of Milksha.

There are currently two Milksha locations, and I won’t be surprised if more pop up. The original location is in downtown, and the second one is in Richmond.

This review is on the Richmond location, located inside Tian Shi Fu restaurant so they share the same entrance. Milksha is located in the waiting area before the restaurant. This small space used to be a Sharetea because I saw some old signs posted outside the restaurant.

Barley tea: Barley tea is something I haven’t seen on bubble tea menus before, only in Korean restaurants! I was excited to try it because I love my barley tea, and it is caffeine free. The barley tea was refreshing and delicious. It was my first time trying barley tea sweetened. This would be a perfect drink to cool off with on a hot day.

In addition, I loved the white honey pearls. They were perfectly fresh and chewy, and had a honey taste to them.

Barley tea latte: I was so excited to order that I accidently placed ordered the milk version on the UberEats app. I asked if I could switch to the non-milk version but it was already made so they said no. So we ended up with 3 drinks that visit and the fiance was happy to drink the tea latte later on.

The barley tea latte was just as good as the non-dairy version. Milksha uses 3.25% organic milk so the quality is quite good.

Izumo matcha fresh milk: The fiance decided to try their matcha drink. It was more on the sweet side and the matcha was not that strong or earthy. I prefer my matcha to be stronger but he enjoyed it. If you like stronger matcha, I’d recommend getting this with less sugar.

Ice Shavings of Orange Juice: On the second visit, I ordered another barley tea so I won’t include that again. This drink sounded interesting and the fiance didn’t want any caffeine, so he went with this. However, the drink name was misleading because it actually did contain tea. It tasted like an orange jasmine tea with some crushed ice on top.

This is an bad photo, but I wanted to show what the drink looked like since the cup was opaque. A strange and misleading name for a drink, but it was good as well although the orange had a slightly artificial taste to it.

We ended up trying the Milksha in downtown too, but ordered the same drinks as reviewed above so I don’t plan on writing another post. With all the bubble tea places popping up, Milksha is a decent choice and their honey pearls are delicious.

SunTea

February 10, 2021

I have heard the buzz surrounding SunTea for awhile now. SunTea is located in Kensington Plaza in Burnaby. We were in the area and since I saw so many good things about SunTea, we decided to try it out.

However, we were disappointed with our visit and it left much to be desired.

It was dark when we went, and originally had some trouble looking for the shop inside the plaza. They are located close to the Kensington Ave entrance on the side, by the Shoppers. Lots of free plaza parking was available.

Due to the pandemic, the cafe was closed for dine in and they offered pick up only. They don’t even let customers order at the counter – you have to download their app and place your order there. There is a number sign on the window letting you know when your order is ready.

Brown sugar milk: The fiance ordered the oreo brown sugar milk and thought it was disappointing. I had a few sips and agreed as well. There are way better brown sugar drinks out there.

The drink didn’t have much flavour and you can already tell just by looking at the drink how plain it was. Usually you can see the brown sugar coated on the cup.

The drink also advertised oreo chunks but there were none to be found.

Coconut pudding mango coconut milk: This sounded amazing but this was not drinkable. I ended up throwing it away after a few sips because of how bad it was.

The coconut milk was very watery and not rich. There was a small amount of mango inside (unlike the advertised photo), and what mango there was, was sour and hard.

Now that I’m looking up the menu for the review, it also says that the drink included coconut pudding but there wasn’t any in the drink??? This was an extremely disappointing drink.

Taro with oat milk: The taro with oat milk was the only decent drink, but even then it was a fail. Why? Because the drink was also supposed to come with oats, but they were sold out. They ended giving us extra pearls to make up for it, but it was still disappointing because the drink was supposed to have oats.

It has been awhile since we had bubble tea THAT bad…. I don’t remember the last time we had such disappointing bubble tea.

At least one topping was missing from every drink – the oreos in the brown sugar milk, coconut pudding in the mango coconut drink, and oats in the taro oat milk drink. 2/3 drinks were also watery and not good.

With so many bubble tea shops everywhere these days, SunTea is at the bottom of my list and I do not want to come back.
