ACI Beauty Preview Spring 2017 (Part 1/2)

April 5, 2017

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Spring 2017 ACI Beauty Preview. I always look forward to going to this event and learning about the new launches, and then sharing it here! Since I hate having long & wordy posts and try to avoid it as much as possible, I decided to split this event into two parts.
We started off with Stila. Take a guess what the product above is. It looks like lip gloss or some sort of lip product, right? That’s what I thought at least. But, it is actually part of their new mermaid inspired line, Magnificent Metals, and they are actually eyeshadows!

I wish I took a picture of the swatch, but sadly I only put it on my Instastory and it’s gone by now. =( The shades were AMAZING. It had some intergalactic, out of this world vibes but with a hint of sparkle and girliness. This is definitely something for the bold and brave, as you will definitely be getting some (good) attention when wearing this!
The next brand we were brought to was Paul & Joe. Paul & Joe are always super creative and detailed in their packaging, so I’m always excited to see what they come up with next. Just when I thought their cat lipsticks from previous seasons were cool, they did it again with their cat shaped lipsticks!

The pinkish-red lipstick in the middle goes on pretty sheer, while the grey ones go on to match your lip colour. I find that Japanese products (Paul & Joe is made in Japan), they are all about the sheer and subtle which Paul & Joe does perfectly, with a huge dosage of cute!
Another picture of the cat lipstick because it is just too cute.
Continuing along the cat trend, the brushes in the back are actually cat paws! How cute! They were so incredible soft as well. I believe the box contains a blush, but I was too distracted by the soft and fluffy cat paw to be 100% sure.
Paul & Joe usually house their products in paper boxes, that have very cute and detailed designs. These are the new blush and bronzer releases.
Perhaps one of the only Paul and Joe products that weren’t cat themed? I was given a sample of one of their nail polishes here and will be writing a review for that this week as well!

You’re probably tired of me gushing over how cute and girly Paul & Joe’s products are, so we will move on to CLEAN. CLEAN is a perfume brand that I haven’t seen around much apart from in the blogosphere, but they do deserve more attention and love.

As their name suggests, CLEAN products smell very fresh and well, clean. One of my favourites from them is a perfume that smells like fresh laundry.

This season, they focused on two summer fragrances, Ultimate Beach Day and Lovegrass. At first, I was a bit reluctant of how the Ultimate Beach Day could smell like a day on the beach, but damn, it really did smell like a day on the beach. It smelled exactly like summer and sunshine, which I am not sure how they perfected it but they did.

The second one was Lovegrass that I didn’t like as much as the Ultimate Beach Day. To me, it had more of a heavier scent and I prefer lighter scents on myself. I think it would be suitable for both females and males.
I’ve never been one to try self tanners or even go to the tanning salon, and have never done both. Does that make me a bad beauty blogger? =P

The main reason why I’ve never tried self tanners is because they look so intimidating and daunting! I always hear horror stories of people not doing it correctly and ending up looking like an orange or waaayyy too dark.

But, I think I do want to try using a self tanner one of these days. I would probably start with the St. Tropez gradual tan, on the left. That way, I can slowly adjust to it instead of somehow messing it up.

The blue bottle in the middle is the same day tan that you spray all over your body. What’s new about it is that it has a 360 degree nozzle so it’s easier to reach your back! The squeeze tube beside it is essentially a body highlighter, you rub this over the parts of your body that you want to have a nice tan sparkle.

This post is getting quite long so I think I will end it here! Part two will be shorter and feature Ardell, Korres, and Bliss.

Maybelline Lash Sensation

March 15, 2017

Wow… so the last time I sat down and wrote an actual mascara review was three years ago. THREE YEARS AGO!

I can’t say I’m TOO surprised though… because mascara and I have never gotten along. I’ve tried many different mascaras over the years, but mascaras just don’t seem to work well with my lashes. They either clump, don’t lengthen well, or the curl doesn’t hold. In addition, I wear glasses everyday so it’s even harder to see mascara. At this point, I’ve just given up unless I’m wearing eyeshadow because the shadow falls onto my lashes and makes them look short.

Luckily, my lashes are decent without mascara (but definitely wouldn’t consider them super nice either) and I have nice bottom lashes already so that’s something right?

It takes a lot for a mascara to wow me, and after three years, I’m back with another mascara review!
My mom had actually bought this mascara and I was just using it once in awhile, because it was conveniently there. It is housed in a pink tube, which makes it easy to stand out.

What it says (Taken from Ulta):

Lash Sensational Mascara from Maybelline is the first patented fanning brush with 10 layers of bristles to reveal a full flourish of lashes. Liquid Ink formula coats from all sides for a sensational full fan effect.

Again, I’ve seen sooo many ads for mascaras with “revolutionary” brushes that claim to do this and that, but never end up working with my lashes. So, I’ve turned a blind eye to whenever I hear or see those claims on TV because it never works for me… and plus, they’re wearing false lashes so you can’t even see the full effect of the mascara?!
Application: I’m not sure if this brush is actually “revolutionary” but DAMN, does it work well with my lashes. And that is RARE! This mascara goes on evenly, and does not clump my eyelashes at all. It separates and lengthens each lash in a very natural way.

Wear: Here is where I was very impressed, and knew that this mascara deserved a recommendation. After a long night of working at my company’s gala event, I came home tired, and ready to remove my makeup. I had just put this on quickly after curling my lashes because I wore eyeshadow that night. I had to do a double-take when I saw the mascara in place as if I just applied it. My lashes were still nice and curled, and there was no clumping to be seen! This RARELY happens!

Here is a picture of before and after the mascara! My lashes definitely look longer, but still very natural and darker.

  • One of the very few mascaras that do not clump and actually hold up the whole day on me
  • Affordable drugstore prices
  • Simply AMAZING!!!! I LOVE IT.

  • Nothing!

A million times YAY!

Heme Waterproof Eyeshadow Pencil

February 20, 2017

Cinnamon is working abroad in Asia, so we delayed our annual Christmas gift exchange until February when she came back to visit. When she asked me what I wanted for a gift, I told her that I wasn’t too sure, but it would be nice to try some Asian beauty products!

So, I was gifted a few Asian beauty products that I will be reviewing in the months to come! I will be starting off with the Heme Waterproof Eyeshadow Pencil.

When we were opening our presents, the four of us weren’t sure what this brand was. Heme? He love me? He heart me? He Me? Hahahaha! We went with Heme and this is the correct version, as I went online to look it up before writing this review.

Although I do follow a few Asian beauty accounts on social media, I had yet to hear of Heme. I was told that this brand was everywhere in Taiwan, which is why she decided to buy it for me.

After doing a bit more research, I found out that Heme is a 100% Taiwan based company. This means that all the ingredients in Heme’s products were made in Taiwan. The company has been around since 2005 and appears to be more focused on skincare rather than beauty products.

What it says (Taken from Heme’s website):

  • Soft and creamier texture and easy to apply.
  • Waterproof formula holds the highest concentration of pigments for more intense eye appearance, lasts all day without creasing or smearing.
  • Contains shimmer glitter powder for more sophisticated results.

As you can tell from the description, English isn’t their first language but I think the translation is really good compared to other translations I’ve read over the years.

The two shades I received was brown and grey. The brown definitely looked more like a gold, due to how shimmery it was.

As for the packaging, I found it to be not that sturdy. When I first opened the gold (I’m just gonna call it gold b/c it def does not look brown to me) packaging, a chunk of the gold pencil fell out. I had to gently nudge it in after, and was very gentle and careful when applying the product.

Application: As their product description stated, I found the eyeshadow pencils to be very creamy! They glided very easily, and were very pigmented. One swatch was all you needed. It was reminiscent of the Urban Decay 24/7 glide on pencil, except this eyeshadow stick is more chunky and not meant for precision.

Wear: One swatch was very pigmented and you could definitely see the sparkle on my eyelids! The eyeshadow lasted about 8 hours without primer before it started to crease. I was pretty impressed because most eyeshadows/eyeliners, without primer do not stand a chance 3+ hours after application!

Although the eyeshadow is in the packaging of an eyeliner, it is definitely more of an eyeshadow. The tip of the eyeshadow pencil is pretty thick, so you are unable to draw a wing.

  • Very pigmented
  • Creamy, easy to apply. Good for when you’re in a rush and just want a pop of colour to your eyes!
  • Vibrant colours

  • Packaging is a bit flimsy. My brown pencil almost fell out when it was first opened.
  • Not waterproof as stated
  • Hard to find in Canada/USA

Yay!

Product received as a gift. Opinions are my own.

Recap: Top Products of 2016

January 10, 2017

I know that it is already 2017, but I still wanted to share my top favourite products that I discovered in 2016!

I chose to only include products discovered in 2016 to keep the list short- this post would be wayyy too long if I included products that I’ve repurchased over the years! Here they are, in no particular order!

essence Brow Definer: Well, 2016 was the year I finally tried essence cosmetics, and I wish I had tried it sooner. So far, I’ve tried their liquid lipsticks, lipsticks, lip liner and eyebrow pencil. The brow definer pencil undoubtedly was one of my 2016 favourites and I use it pretty much everyday! For $2, it does a great job and lasts the whole day, as long as you don’t rub it or sleep or something. My pencil is nearing the end and almost getting to the point where it is too short to sharpen. I will definitely be repurchasing this product again!
Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation: My Holy Grail high-end foundation is the Urban Decay Naked foundation, which I still really love. At the Estee Lauder media event, I was introduced to their Double Wear Foundation line, which I was told was a classic favourite. I was really impressed with this foundation, and love it just as much as the Urban Decay Naked!

kylie matte lipstick 22Kylie Lip Kit: I never gave much thought to the Kardashian/Jenner clan or Kylie’s products, but one of my best friends tried her lip kit and raved about it. Since then, I have become a huge fan of Kylie’s products for their beautiful pigmentation and long wear! I’ve only reviewed the matte liquid lipstick on the blog, but in the past month, I also tried one of her lip glosses and the eyeshadow palette (by accident, funny story LOL). I will probably be reviewing those when I get around to taking the photos! So many new products to review, so little time!
KORRES Wild Rose Brightening Oil: This was earlier on in the year, but for a good three weeks, I solely used the KORRES Wild Rose Brightening Oil. In those three weeks, I noticed a dramatic difference in the quality of my skin. It also mixed beautifully into foundations for a nice, dewy finish. I don’t use this as often as I want because I’m reluctant to finish the product, which is a bit sill of me (otherwise known as not “seh duk” in Cantonese).
Seche Vite top coat: I started off the year with this wonderful purchase, which has ruined me for the better. I do not use any other top coats, nor do I trust any of them to perform at the same quality and price that Seche Vite does. Seriously, this stuff is amazing. It makes your cheap nail polish look like a million bucks, and does not chip AT ALL.

Well, there you have it! The top beauty products that I discovered in 2016 🙂 It’s been yet another great year of beauty blogging and I’m looking forward to the new products that I have yet to discover in 2017!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel

December 7, 2016

This product is one of those where I can’t believe I haven’t blogged about it yet! I’ve been using and repurchased the Anastasia Beverly Hills tinted brow gel for over two years now.

Anastasia Beverly Hills is definitely one of the top products, if not THE product, the beauty world absolutely SWEARS by.

For this post, I will be focusing on their brow gel! I have the shade chocolate.

anastasia-beverly-hills-tinted-brow-gel-sephoraWhat it says (Taken from Sephora):

  • For those with thin, sparse brows, this unique, botanical formula gives the appearance of fuller, thicker brows.
  • The combination of cream and gel effortlessly defines and fills in the look of brows while controlling and shaping without flaking or fading.anastasia-beverly-hills-tinted-brow-gel-brown

Application: The application process is pretty standard. The product comes in a sturdy tube and your typical brow brush.

You can use the brush to apply a more rounded, curved shape or you can make it more angled and sharp. But,the brush also causes some slight problems as I’ll mention below.

Wear: On top of the great colour and beautiful, full shape, this brow gel is very long lasting. It does not smudge and will easily survive a 12+ hour day without retouches. With that said, it is also easy to remove with makeup remover.
anastasia-beverly-hills-tinted-brow-gelHere is a picture of my eyebrows without the brow gel. Although I do like my eyebrows without filling them in, I like to enhance them and make them look even better.
anastasia-beverly-hills-tinted-brow-gel-after-asian-skinHere are my eyebrows after! As you can tell, there is a big difference. My brows are thicker and fuller now.

First, I make sure the brush is completely straight and parallel to my brow. When your brush is slightly slanted, your brows will arch too soon. That is something you do not want because that is how you get rounded rainbow/sperm brows and those ain’t cute.

As you can see from the pic below, the brush is slightly rounded instead of straight & skinny, making it harder for a precise look and easier for sperm brows.

I would prefer a thinner brush because this brow gel is only good if you want thick and full brows. It is hard to achieve a thin brow shape with this because of how big the brush is.

anastasia-beverly-hills-tinted-brow-gel-brush-espressoThen, I like to extend the shape of my eyebrows a bit past my natural hairs, because I think my face is quite round and having shorter brows make it look even rounder.

While extending, this part can sometimes be tricky depending on how much product is on the brush. Much like nail polish, sometimes there is too much product on the tip of the brow brush and the colour becomes uneven.

In this case, I will take my brow pencil and fill in the uneven parts and it’s all good.
1

  • Makes your brows look AMAZING!
  • Does an AMAZING job at filling in your brows, and giving them definition
  • Long lasting
  • Does not flake or fade

2

  • Brush is thicker than most spoolie brushes, which means you can only create thicker brow looks and it’s hard to be precise
  • Can be tricky if you have too little/too much product on the brush, leading to uneven colour

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons. Once I run out of this, I don’t think I will repurchase only because I want to try the other ABH products, mainly the dip brow or the brow wiz! I’ve repurchased this once already =P

The dip brow and brow wiz are their most popular items, and they seem to solve the problem with the brow gel, which is that it can only create thick brow looks.

yay-nay-or-meh

Yay!
