Bai Bua Thai Cuisine (Two Visits)

February 8, 2017

While looking for dinner options for our girls reunion, Cinnamon suggested Bai Bua. She had raved about it before and I’ve heard great things from other people as well! I am really glad we ended up coming here.

This post is a combination of two visits!
Bai Bua is conveniently located in East Van, by Hastings and Nanaimo. Within a couple of blocks, you are in foodie heaven… Tacofino, Red Wagon, East Cafe, Platform 7, Aer Cafe, Sushi Nanaimo… and of course, Bai Bua!

We weren’t sure how busy it was going to be, so I called in to make a reservation for four a few days prior.

Throughout the night, it was pretty quiet, which was good because we had brought our belated Christmas presents to exchange after dinner. Throughout the night, service was pretty decent although there was confusion around them forgetting one of our dishes.

Walking in, I really liked the decor of the restaurant. It felt very cozy and warm, with some hand painted artwork on the walls.
Tom yum noodle soup, $10.90: Cinnamon had been here a couple times before, and said the tom yum noodle soup was pretty good. Despite not being allowed to eat spicy food, she decided to break the rule that night because this soup was just THAT good! It packed a good amount of spice and was a generous portion.
Curry noodle, $11.90: It took us awhile to order because I was having a hard time choosing what to get. Everything sounded so good! In the end, Sangria was nice enough to offer splitting two dishes! The first dish we ordered was the curry noodle. Sangria had also been here before, and really loved these noodles.

All of their curries are made in coconut milk, meaning that it was safe for me to eat! The curry noodles were nice and creamy with a rich broth, and a good amount of spice. There was a combination of both the pad thai noodles and fried egg noodles (I think that’s what it was?).  The protein in the curry noodles was chicken breast, which there was a good amount of.
Roasted duck red curry, $12.90: Originally, Sangria and I had ordered green curry. But after placing the order, we saw the roasted duck special listed on their chalkboard and both wanted that instead! Then, Cocoa read the menu as well and decided that SHE also wanted to change her pad thai to the roasted duck red curry as well.

We were really glad we changed it, because this was aammaazziinngg! The roasted duck was very tender, juicy and flavourful. There was quite a bit of roasted duck in there as every spoonful was met with pieces of duck meat. As for the curry, it was sweeter due to the cane sugar and pineapples. I wish that this was a permanent item, but all the more reason to come back again before February ends!

Cocoa isn’t much of a spice person, but she enjoyed this because it was more on the sweet side with only a hint of spice. I brought the leftovers back and the boyfriend scoffed at me for ordering red curry instead of green curry (because green curry is better), but quickly changed his mind once I heated it up for him with the coconut rice.

Tom Yum Noodle Soup, $10.90: The next week, I took the boyfriend here! We were both wanting to try the tom yum soup, so why not get some noodles with it too? I’m glad I double checked with the server because although it didn’t sound like it, this dish contained both coconut milk and regular milk.

This was my least favourite dish so far. Although I liked how it was spicy and sour, I wasn’t a big fan of the herbs they used in the soup- there’s a spice that I don’t like in Thai food, but I can’t put my finger on which one exactly it is… Maybe since we couldn’t have the regular milk inside, that made the taste of the herbs a bit stronger? However, the boyfriend enjoyed the dish and happily ate the rest of it.

I was also unlucky and ate a big chunk of dried, chewy lemongrass. I also didn’t really like the texture of the noodles either. Oh yeah, and the beef was dry and rough.
Green curry, $11.90: On my first visit I tried the red curry, this time it was the green curry! The green curry wasn’t as spicy and more on the sweet side. As with the red curry, the green curry was rich and creamy from the coconut milk. The chicken was moist and juicy, with a good amount of veggies inside.

Coconut rice large, $5.00: A Thai dinner isn’t complete without coconut rice! Their coconut rice is so good. It has a strong coconut flavour and is slightly sweet. Any curry and their coconut rice is the perfect marriage!

I recommend getting the large for two people, as you can pack it up with the remainder of the curry sauce and eat it for lunch the next day, as I did 😉

Phew! Such a long post… but for good reason! I definitely see myself coming back here in the future and I’m glad Cinnamon suggested this place!

Yay!

Heirloom Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurant

January 29, 2017

Ahhh, vegetarian/vegan food. How are we have come, how much our relationship as improved. Heirloom Vegetarian Restaurant is one of the most popular vegetarian/vegan eateries in Vancouver, so I knew I had to come in and try their vegan food.

It was my Vegan Buddy’s birthday in October, so we decided to come here for a birthday brunch! Yes, this post is super late… I actually forgot about writing it until I was deleting stuff off my phone (Curse you, iPhone storage) and found these pictures.

Tbh, the food wasn’t that good and left lots to be desired- that’s why I forgot about blogging because it was so meh.

Heirloom Vegetarian Restaurant is located on the west side of Vancouver. There’s West Vancouver, the west side, and the west end… Heirloom is on the west side, just off South Granville. It’s located in a busy area, but luckily we found free parking right outside the restaurant.

If there’s one thing to give props to, it’s the decor. The restaurant is very clean, comfortable and spacious, with high ceilings.

This place is heaven to the stereotypical rich, healthy, yoga-doing, organic-only, Vancouver girl. This is a restaurant I imagine Lululemon lovers flock to. Since I am not rich, only semi-healthy, and don’t do yoga on a daily basis, I did not fit their clientele.  If you are not dainty and soft spoken, you probably won’t fit in here (like moi).

Perhaps the servers could tell I was a fraud that didn’t meet the clientele criteria, but service was pretty cold and slow that day.

Tofu Rancheros, $19.95: Since I can’t have dairy, we tried the vegan menu only. The tofu rancheros was a tofu scramble, with spicy chilli, served on grilled corn tortillas, topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, ranchero sauce, fresh cilantro and green onion.

We thought this was pretty decent, but definitely overpriced. The tomatoes and green onions tasted fresh on the tofu scramble, but the greens for the house salad weren’t that fresh.
Banana French Toast, $16.95: This sounded good on the menu, but it was really disappointing. The french toast was made with an almond milk and banana infused batter. It was very bland and we could only taste burnt toast that had a soft and moist texture.

We found ourselves trying to salvage this dish by dipping it in the cashew cream drizzle, but there wasn’t enough drizzle to drown out the bland and burnt taste. In addition, the bananas were cut VERY thinly.
Field Roast Sausage, $5.00: Vegan Buddy and I were both curious as to what the sausage would taste like, so we ordered this as a side. It was decent and resembled the texture of sausage, although it wasn’t as juicy.

Overall, we thought Heirloom was just ‘meh’ and thinking back, it was definitely overpriced. Perhaps their vegetarian menu would have tasted better, but we were there specifically to try the vegan menu since I can’t have dairy. Actually, I have full confidence their vegetarian menu would be better because cheese.

Their vegan food is probably meant for full vegans who have acquired the taste of vegan eating. Not those who like to eat vegan food sometimes like us. And definitely not for people who enjoy eating meat and dairy!

The overall atmosphere did not feel welcoming or friendly. Coupled with mediocre vegan food and high prices, I don’t think I would come back here. I’ll stick to my other vegan places like Virtuous Pie or Vegan Pizza House instead.

Nay.

Sal Y Limon

January 22, 2017

I normally don’t go for Mexican food- actually, scratch that, I never go for Mexican. I don’t remember the last time I had Mexican prior to this month. OH wait, I think it was Las Margaritas almost two years ago, for Dine Out Vancouver 2015.

I don’t really know why, I guess because there are so many restaurants to pick from in Vancouver that Mexican food goes off my radar! But lately this month, I have been trying more places. And by places, I mean Chipotle (Yes, I finally tried Chipotle and I can see why people rave about it) and this review, Sal Y Limon!

sal-y-limon-vancouver

Sal Y Limon is located inside a small strip mall off Fraser. Parking is a tiny bit of a mess, so I recommend trying to find parking on the side streets. I don’t understand why the architects of this strip mall made it like a zig zag shape, ineffectively making the parking lot messy as well.
sal-y-limon-vancouver-mexicanOnce inside, it is pretty spacious although it can feel cramped during peak hours. Once you get in, you order your food at the till. The workers will bring you your food with the corresponding number stand.
sal-y-limon-vancouver-mexican-tacosShrimp taco, $2.75: The shrimp taco is on the far left. I am a huge shrimp lover and devoured this! The shrimp was big and juicy, with a fresh and crunchy batter. It was topped off with crunchy and fresh veggies, and a spoonful of spicy mayo. So good! All the flavours went perfectly together!

Pollo pibil, $2.60: I ordered two different chicken tacos! This one was the slow roasted marinated chicken breast. It was soooo tender and packed with flavour. The pickled lettuce and cilantro also went really well with the tender chicken breast. Out of the two chicken tacos, I definitely recommend this one!

Pollo asado, $2.60: Same price as the chicken breast. This one is really simple, just chicken meat seasoned with salt and a bit of pepper. I found it a bit too plain, considering the explosion of flavours from the other two tacos. However, if you want something simple, this is the one to order.
sal-y-limon-vancouver-mexican-tacosShrimp taco, $2.75: See comments above

Pollo pibil, $2.60: See comments above

Tinga vegetariana, $3.00: This was one of the vegetarian tacos. Although I didn’t try it, my cousin enjoyed it although she thought it was pretty spicy (she doesn’t do spicy food at all, so might not be that bad for spice lovers).

It came with mushrooms, zucchinis, onions, and napoles (Which I just learned from writing the post is that napoles are a vegetable made from cacti. Who know that you could eat part of a cacti?! See how blogging teaches you things? =P)

sal-y-limon-burritoPierna, $9.05: Instead of ordering tacos like my cousin and I, the boyfriend ordered a burrito! And boy, was it massive. It was bursting with rice, beans, cabbage, sour cream, and more.

The boyfriend ordered the pierna, which is pulled pork. He also added cheese for an extra cost. I didn’t try it but he said it was amazing, and wouldn’t stop talking about how good it was! I mean, I wouldn’t doubt him…it looks amazingly delicious!

Overall, Sal Y Limon is a great place to go for Mexican. I am not a Mexican food expert so I’m not sure if it’s authentic or not, but I can attest that they have delicious and fresh food! Also, the prices are so cheap!

The Pink Bicycle

January 19, 2017

While in Victoria, the boyfriend and I tried a few locally loved restaurants. I mean, you’re not truly visiting a place if you don’t try their food, right? When we were looking up restaurants to eat, The Pink Bicycle rose to the top of both of our lists.

We made the decision to walk from our hotel to The Pink Bicycle to save on parking and see more of the city, but the walk was longer and more difficult than we expected. We got a bit lost, it was still really cold from the snow storm warning, and I was getting blisters from the new winter boots I had just bought in preparation.

The restaurant is dark and doesn’t really have much signage, except for a pink bicycle on the window.
As expected on a Friday night, there was a bit of a wait. The restaurant is pretty small, and the kitchen is on the top floor. I always feel a bit bad for restaurants where the kitchen is on another level, because of the servers who have to walk up and down.

If that was me, I probably would slip a few times.
Pink Bike Cheeseburger, $12.50: I ordered their standard cheeseburger, but without the cheese due to my dairy restriction =(. It came on a toasted sesame bun, naturally raised local beef, veggies, and the pink bike sauce (a combination of mustard, ketchup, and relish).

This burger was such a delight! You could really taste the quality in it. The patty was thick and juicy, and full of flavour. You know it’s a good burger when the juices are oozing out onto your plate and getting all over your fingers.

I also really enjoyed the sesame bun. It was nice and thick, and reminded me of a classic burger. Although the pink bike sauce is just a combination of mustard, ketchup, and relish, they really nailed down the ratio because it tasted really good.

For my side, I stuck with the regular fries. They were nice and crispy.
BBQ Island Bison Burger, $15.50: The boyfriend also really enjoyed the bison burger. As with my beef burger, his bison burger was thick and juicy as well. It was topped with smoky cheddar and BBQ sauce.

Since we were on vacation, he went all out and upgraded to the mac and cheese sticks. I really wish I could have tried them because he kept raving about how delicious and cheesy they are.

He also added a zesty lime mayo dip, which he said was alright. The star of the dinner was definitely the mac & cheese sticks for him!

Overall, we really enjoyed our food at The Pink Bicycle and I would highly recommend giving it a try if you’re a burger lover! Service was a bit slow since they were busy, but they were all very friendly and catered to my food restrictions nicely!

Virtuous Pie (Vegan Pizza Joint)

January 8, 2017

Vegan eating has been something that I thought was disgusting, but now I have grown an inkling towards it. Well, it started with cutting out ALL dairy from my diet due to health issues. Lately, I’ve been thinking about sustainable and conscious eating as well.

After much thought, I don’t think I could become 100% vegan for many reasons, but I do appreciate vegan eating and am open to it. I love going into a restaurant and not having to worry about dairy products, or getting social anxiety from asking a bunch of questions and being judged (although this second reason I don’t really care about anymore, I do what I want ok).

virtuous-pie-vegan-pizza-vancouver-chinatownVirtuous Pie is a new vegan pizza/ice cream parlour that opened up in Chinatown. One thing I’ve really missed is pizza, so I knew I had to come here!

It is conveniently located in the middle of Chinatown on Main Street, Vegan Buddy and I took the 22 bus from downtown and walked a few steps over. I was in love with their design, minimal yet sophisticated. It was also bright and spacious!
virtuous-pie-vegan-pizza-vancouver-ovenAfter placing your order and paying, you can see the pizza being assembled in front of you. Each pizza is made fresh to order, and baked in the oven.
virtuous-pie-vegan-pizza-fennel-and-sausageFennel & sausage, $12: I really wanted to try this because of the faux sausage! I am a big meat lover, and other meat alternatives like seitan just do not cut it for me. With that said, the sausage tasted really legit and I was really impressed!

This was my favourite pizza  because I liked the generous portion of sausage, and it was nice and garlicky.

I do wish there would have been more cashew mozzarella though. The cashew mozzarella had a very light taste to it so I didn’t taste much, but the cheesy texture was there.
virtuous-pie-vancouver-stranger-wingsStranger Wings, $12: Stranger Wings was the most raved about on Yelp, so we had to try it. It is a vegan take on buffalo chicken, where they use cauliflower as a substitute.

Because I am not a fan of barbeque sauce, this was my least favourite. As well, cauliflower just does not replace chicken but the buffalo flavour was definitely there!

I liked how creamy the blue cheese drizzle was.
virtuous-pie-vancouver-superfunghiSuperfunghi, $12: I really liked this pizza! It was a bit different than I was used to because they use a mashed potato sauce in place of your standard tomato sauce. The potato was nice and garlicky, and so delicious!

There was a generous amount of juicy mushrooms as well! The two of us ordered so much that we ended up packing a lot back home, but we were glad we got to try three flavours. My only complaint would be that their cheese lacks the regular cheese taste so I didn’t get that part of my craving satisfied. =(

Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to Virtuous Pie. Their pizzas are like a healthier, non-oily/greasy, lighter version of Pizza Hut or Dominos. You can really see and taste the quality of their ingredients, and you won’t leave feeling guilty or greasy.

I am already thinking of my next visit back and ordering the fennel & sausage pizza!
