Curiously Carmen

Chakra Indian Restaurant

October 22, 2020

Chakra Indian Cuisine opened a bit over a year ago in The Heights neighborhood. The restaurant used to be King Mahal Indian for almost 10 years, but they have since switched owners. Before that, I remember that this used to also be an Afghanistan restaurant.

Maki and Nigiri order delivery from Chakra regularly, and have said good things about it. When Nigiri came over one night, he placed an order here and I was able to try it.

Garlic naan bread: The garlic naan bread was huge! It doesn’t look that big in the photo, but it was. There was a nice garlic flavour and the bread was nice and chewy. We used the garlic naan bread as dip for the other dishes.

Palak paneer: Maki and Nigiri both really love palak paneer, but I have yet to try until now. Palak paneer is a thick puree of spinach and cottage cheese. Initially, the taste of the puree was mild but the heat and aromatic herbs and spices slowly built up.

I thought that the palak paneer would have more cheesy taste since there is lots of cottage cheese inside, but the cheese was quite mild in flavour. Most of the flavour came from the spiciness and herbs. There were also some cubes of cottage cheese inside. Overall, I enjoyed it and would eat it again.

Butter chicken: The butter chicken was great as well. The sauce was very creamy and rich with a hint of sweetness. No complaints about it!

Vegetable biryani: The only dish I didn’t like that evening. I’ve had biryani at many different places now and it seems to be hit or miss. The vegetable biryani was really oily so it lacked the fluffiness that biryani should have.

In addition, the oily rice was packed densely together in the takeout box so everything was compressed tightly. So far, the restaurant with the fluffiest, fragrant biryani has been Desi Turka and that has been my standard for biryani.

Overall, Chakra Indian Restaurant was great and I’d order delivery from them again (just not the biryani). I’m glad that we finally tried it.

Yook Korean Grilled BBQ & Bistro – Revisit

October 18, 2020

Yook opened a bit over 3 years ago, and I remember we were quite excited to have a Korean restaurant so close by! However, we ended up only going once with Smores, which I wrote a review on.

Then, Kook Korean BBQ opened up shortly afterwards and that has been our go-to place for Korean when we are feeling like going somewhere close. There is also the newly opened Rib & Chicken a couple blocks away from Kook now.

We ended up at Yook on a whim. I was craving Korean noodle soup and we were going to go to Kook like usual, but they were closed. I figured I’d write a re-visit post since it’s been 2 years.

The restaurant was clean and organized, with hand sanitizer, contract tracing and socially distant tables. One thing I liked about Yook was the abundance of plants and greenery. The plants also provided some privacy between tables.

Banchan: We started off with the banchan. They were all tasty with no complaints. Also, in the back of the photo, you’ll see the sauce container. I appreciated how they wrapped it during the pandemic to prevent everyone touching the same bottle.

Bibimbap: When this arrived at the table, I was really underwhelmed. Usually bibimbap is served in a hot stone bowl, but this was served in a cold metal bowl that was refrigerated. Perhaps this is normal in Korean restaurants, and if so, I apologize for my lack of knowledge. But my first thought was that wouldn’t the food get cold easier?

Also, we like the stone bowls more because you can spread the rice thinly around the hot bowl and have crunchy rice, a great way to end the dish.

Secondly, bibimbap is usually served with an egg where you mix the egg yolk into the rest of the dish. I was disappointed to see that it didn’t come with an egg. We double checked with the waitress incase this was forgotten, but they told us that the egg was extra.

The bibimbap was tasty so it made up for the initial disappointing thoughts a little bit. I remembered that they have great stir-fry meat dishes, and the beef was very flavourful and tender. Even then, I couldn’t help by thinking it was lacking compared to other restaurants.

Update: I’ve been informed that the stone bowl bibimbap is known as a dol sot bibimbap. The more you learn! Now I know to look for “dol sot” on the menu to make sure it’s a stone bowl.

Dduck mandu gook: I was originally wanting an ox bone soup, but was disappointed that they didn’t have it on the menu. I saw that they had a rice cake soup with handmade dumplings, so I decided to try Yook’s version of it after having a delicious bowl at Tongileo.

The soup broth was comforting and delicious, and tasted like an ox bone soup broth. The rice cakes were chewy, and they also included some sliced scrambled egg and beef strips. The beef was on the tough side so it was hard to chew, and strongly marinated with ginger.

However, the dumplings were plump and delicious, packed full of vegetables and pork.

Yook wouldn’t be a place that I drive purposely too, only if I was in the area. With that said, I would still pick Kook over Yook.

Tongileo (TEO) Korean Restaurant

October 14, 2020

Quietly nestled in a small strip mall in Port Coquitlam, lies an authentic Korean restaurant that goes by both Tongileo or TEO Korean Restaurant. I have never heard of this place until my Korean friend, Fish, told me about it! She lives nearby and this was her go-to for authentic comforting, homemade dumplings and soup noodles.

Her Korean grandma also approves of this place so that’s when you know it’s legit! I rarely go to Port Coquitlam but I made the trek out here one evening to try it.

Tongileo was located in quite a random location, off Lougheed Highway in Port Coquitlam. The storefront doesn’t actually say Tongileo or TEO Korean Restaurant on it.

Instead, it just advertises “Tofu back bone soup” and the restaurant name is on the strip mall sign post. I didn’t realize until driving back home, that it was only minutes away from Coquitlam Center. There is also a small meat shop in this plaza, and I read reviews that they are the same owners as Tongileo but not sure if that’s true or not.

We came on a weekday evening and the restaurant was at full capacity with COVID restrictions. We got the last table so we didn’t have to wait. Yay!

Banchan: The banchan that day was seaweed, kimchi, and sweet potato. They were all tasty and fresh.

Seafood pancake: The seafood pancake was jampacked with ingredients inside, and was flavourful. My only complaint would be that it could have been slightly more crispier but it was still delicious.

Kal-guksu with dumplings: This is Fish’s go-to order, and I ordered it as well! I am a huge lover of a warm bowl of comforting soup noodles. This was my first time trying Korean soup noodles like this!

The dumplings were jampacked with pork and lots of chopped vegetables inside. They were very comforting and tasted homemade, not too salty and simple. I loved how much chopped vegetables were inside and how plump and filled these dumplings were.

The broth was simple and clear, yet flavourful. It felt healthy and safe to eat with my sensitive stomach. There were also some slices of beef in the soup but the star of the show was definitely the dumplings.

The noodles were also handmade and knife chopped, so they were a bit rugged in texture which I loved. I find that these types of noodles carry more soup in the ridges.

Bossam and kimchi: Fish ordered the kal-guksu combo, which came with the dumplings and noodle soup along with bossam and kimchi. The bossam was tender and rich, with a nice fatty taste to it. The kimchi packed a lot of heat and was fresh and crunchy.

Overall, it was a good visit to Tongileo and I’m glad to have ventured out to Port Coquitlam with Fish to try it. It’s a hidden gem in PoCo and it could be hard to find especially since the name of the restaurant isn’t on the storefront, but the food was great.

Saffron Indian Cuisine

October 12, 2020

The fiance and I have been wanting to try different Indian restaurants lately! After looking around at some delivery apps, we picked Saffron Indian Cuisine.

The restaurant is located on Kingsway in Burnaby, a few blocks from Metrotown and beside Nando’s. I took this picture for this post a couple of weeks after we ordered delivery.

Samosas: The samosas were packed and plump, but it could have used more spices and flavour. Considering how Indian food is very aromatic and fragrant, the samosas were on the bland side.

Chicken korma: The chicken korma was delicious! The sauce was fragrant and flavourful, with a nice spicy kick. It came with a side of fluffy basmati rice, which was a deciding factor in us choosing this restaurant because many chicken korma dishes at other restaurants didn’t come with rice.

We enjoyed the chicken korma the most and had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day.

Chicken biryani: I always order chicken biryani because it’s my favourite and I also like to compare different restaurants. Unfortunately, I found the chicken biryani here to be disappointing.

The rice was too oily and wet, so it lacked the fluffiness I was looking for in a biryani. Flavourwise, it was fragrant and tasty but I was not a fan of the wet rice.

Overall, I found Saffron to be meh. Nothing special or nothing extremely bad. It wouldn’t be a top pick for Indian food and I’d like to try other places instead of ordering from them again.

Say Hello Sweets

October 8, 2020

Say Hello Sweets is an ice cream shop that has been on my list to try for awhile now! I didn’t realize that Avocado wanted to try it as well until recently, so we decided to go check it out together.

Say Hello Sweets is located on the outskirts of Chinatown, beside Andy Livingstone Park by Tinseltown. You may recognize their name because they started out as a food truck. The shop is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, with the rest of the days focusing on the food truck.

The shop itself is very small, with room for perhaps 2-3 people max to sit inside. Due to the pandemic, there were no tables for us to sit inside because I imagine that they only allow a maximum of 3 people or so in the shop. They had a few tables outside so we ordered and had our desserts outside.

Everything offered at Say Hello Sweets is entirely dairy free and vegan! That was the reason it was on my list, since I shouldn’t be having much dairy due to my stomach problems.

Vegan strawberry ice cream: Originally, we came for the ice cream sandwiches, but I saw that they had a strawberry flavour ice cream and I couldn’t pass up the chance to try it.

The strawberry ice cream was absolutely phenomenal. The ice cream was rich and had some real strawberry pieces inside too. Most vegan ice creams are made with coconut milk because of how rich it is. Usually, I find that the coconut milk taste is quite strong but in this case, I couldn’t taste much of the coconut at all.

Instead, it was just a rich strawberry taste like dairy ice cream. Although I can eat dairy currently without issues (HAH, watch this sentence curse me), I would still come back here for their strawberry ice cream.

Marshmallow ice dream sandwich: The marshmallow is their most popular ice dream sandwich flavour, so naturally we had to try it. I forgot to take a photo until after we split it in half to share and Avocado had eaten hers already, so this is just my portion. Oops!

Just like the strawberry ice cream, this did not disappoint as well! It reminded me of a melted marshmallow in a smore, but featured in a a cold, ice cream addition. Very good and a must try here!

Lemon ice dream sandwich: Compared to the marshmallow ice dream sandwich, we found this one to be alright. The lemon sandwich wasn’t as creamy, and reminded me more of a sorbet.

Matcha sesame: Avocado also got the matcha sesame sandwich to go. This is one of their seasonal features I believe.

They usually have a matcha and sesame bar sold separately, but they have merged the two flavours into one bar. She also enjoyed the matcha sesame, but her top pick was still the marshmallow.

I’d highly recommend stopping by to “Say Hello” on the weekends (because they’re closed weekdays). Whether you’re lactose intolerant/vegan/have other dietary restrictions or not, Say Hello was enjoyable and I’m glad that I finally had the chance to try it. It’s a great and delicious alternative to dairy ice cream and I’m happy that I have this option to go to now as well!
