Chef Hung Taiwanese Noodle

October 19, 2017

In August, I had a craving for Taiwanese noodles, even though it was very hot outside. So after doing some research, I remembered that SFU had just opened a new Taiwanese noodle place, Chef Hung!

I’ve been to the Chef Hung at Aberdeen Center in Richmond at least 6-7 years ago and remembered that it was really good but haven’t gone back since.

Seeing that the distance between Chef Hung’s and another Taiwanese beef noodle place was about the same we decided to go to SFU because we knew that it would not be as busy on a Friday night.

Since it was semester break the restaurant was pretty quiet. Prior to visiting, we called the restaurant to see if it was open as many other food places at SFU were closed during the break.

I’ve heard that during school time the restaurant is pretty lined up and busy though.

The restaurant was pretty comfortable and also very clean! That’s always the plus side of going to new restaurants 🙂

Champion beef brisket in clear noodle soup: I just wanted the standard Taiwanese beef noodle but the menu was a bit confusing as the descriptions didn’t seem to have it. So I decided to just take the chance and get this one and hope that it was the correct one.

Unfortunately, I was wrong! This was not this Taiwanese beef noodle soup that I was craving but I decided to try it anyways! I wasn’t a big fan of the meat because I don’t normally enjoy eating skin or tendon or anything like that, so luckily the boyfriend was able to have all of the meat.

As for the broth, it was really clear and it tasted pretty healthy. I was hoping to have the dark beef broth with preserved veggies that usually comes with Taiwanese noodles but this one was alright too. The only thing that matched my cravings were the chewy flat noodles which were delicious. There were dense and chewy.

Award-winning beef shank and tripe in tomato noodle soup: I guess beef shank was the meat that I was looking for but it’s quite confusing because restaurants describe their meats differently.

So we ended up trading the meat and I had the beef shank, which the boyfriend didn’t mind because he liked the meat in my bowl better anyways. The beef shank was PERFECTTTT, it was so tender and full of marinated flavour!

Just like my soup, his tomato soup was pretty clear and also healthy not to oily or salty.

Taiwanese chicken nuggets: The boyfriend was curious as to how the chicken nuggets fared here. It was a good choice because he really liked them! They weren’t too salty, not overcooked, and very fresh and crispy.

Overall I think that this place is a bit overpriced but you do get what you pay for! All the ingredients are of good quality but it was disappointing to see that they didn’t have the standard Taiwanese beef noodle soup that most Taiwanese restaurants have. However, it’s definitely a decent option to have if you are stuck on campus.

Yay!

Shang Pin Beef Noodle House

March 18, 2017

Instead of our usual dinner spots, the boyfriend and I decided to find a new place to go to! After some Yelping, we found Shang Pin Beef Noodle House as one of their ‘hot and new’ places.

Shang Pin Beef Noodle House is in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, which always has a special place in my heart and many great childhood memories. It was a bit hard to find parking on Saturday night, but we finally found an empty meter… With 53 minutes left!!! How lucky!

Octopus party to protect people’s privacy LOL!

The restaurant before used to be a Japanese restaurant called 1/2 roll… Where their speciality was making half order of rolls. Yeah, I can see why Shang Pin replaced it…

Anyway, walking into the restaurant, it was very clean. We were surprised that it was 95% full at 6 pm already, so clearly it’s gotten some much deserved attention.

We found the waiting area a bit strange because it was so big! Couldn’t they have fit a couple more tables instead of making such a big waiting area? But who am I to judge, I’ve never owned a restaurant before.

Perhaps their kitchen isn’t big enough to handle additional tables? As the night continued, that was probably the case because our food was very slow……..
Pickled cucumbers, free: For their grand opening, we received a complimentary plate of pickled cucumbers to snack on. Later on, these became imperative because our food was taking so long, and we were haaaannnngry!

The pickled cucumbers were crunchy and also had a nice garlicky taste to it. They were very refreshing and make a good appetizer to clear your palette.
Milk tea, $4.00: The boyfriend is a huge fan of milk tea, so he wanted to see how this place was. The milk tea took quite awhile to come. After asking, we were told it was on the way and that there were many drinks ahead.

He said the milk tea was good, although he was used to the Hong Kong style milk tea more. It also came in a to-go cup so he brought it with him afterwards.
Braised beef shank in noodle soup, $8.95: I chose the thick noodles, which were delicious and so comforting!

They had a nice chew to it, and the soup fit in the grooves of the thick noodles – exactly what I’m looking for in a bowl of beef noodles.

The beef shank was tender and flavourful, but found that there wasn’t that many pieces of it.

Oh yeah, I found the broth to be a tad too salty so I put some of my hot water to dilute it.
Deep fried Taiwanese nuggets in beef soup, $8.75: The boyfriend ordered thin noodles, which he enjoyed.

As with my beef shank, he found that there wasn’t that much chicken nuggets. Although it looks like a lot in the picture, the bowl was small. Nonetheless, with what there was, the chicken nuggets were delicious and crispy.

From when we first sat down to when our food arrived at the table, took 45 minutes! We were getting impatient, but understood that it’s a new restaurant so perhaps they still had some issues to work out.

When the food finally arrived, it was very satisfying and delicious. Despite the smaller amounts of meat, we would come back here if we’re craving Taiwanese noodles!

Yay!

Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House

November 11, 2016

After a fun evening of peddle boating, Sangria and I were hungry and around the Metrotown area. We also underestimated the two hour activity and ended up with pretty sore quads!

I suggested we come to Lao Shan Dong for a warming bowl of noodles. I had been here before and remembered it was pretty decent. I never got around to writing a review at my first visit though.

Small braised beef flank in noodle soup, $6.95: This is the standard beef noodle soup. I really enjoyed this bowl of noodles!

The homemade noodles were chewy and thinner than I was used to, but super good. They were cooked perfectly and weren’t too soggy or undercooked. I am seriously the biggest noodle fan and this surpassed my expectations.

For $7, it came with a great portion of beef flank as well! The beef flank was tender and well seasoned.

Small spicy braised beef flank in dry noodle with sauce, $7.25: When this arrived, Sangria and I were both confused because it looked as if it came in soup.

Her noodles were the same as mine, but the sauce was oilier and spicy. I had a bite and it had a good amount of spice to it. The freshly chopped onions were a great topping as well!

Although we enjoyed the food, Sangria’s cup had a gross stain on it. Luckily, she caught it before she drank a lot!

Another thing to note was the weird smell in here. Tbh, it was really off putting and unpleasant. It was a mix of gamey meat smell with very strong chemicals. The first thing my friend said when we walked in was if they serve a lot of lamb in here cause the odour was that strong!

Bleh! We came around 8:30/9:00 so maybe they were starting to clean. But the strange smell of this place was just unpleasant and yucky. I would probably come back if I was in the area and wanting a cheap and satisfying bowl of noodles though – hopefully the smell was just a one time thing!

Jia Plus Fusion Cafe

September 9, 2016

I don’t know about you, but I rarely venture out to Pitt Meadows. There hasn’t ever really been a reason to hang out in Pitt Meadows, until now! One of my friends opened up a cute little cafe in Pitt Meadows last year, in Osprey Village.

We were pretty surprised at how fast the drive was to Pitt Meadows! It was a bit under 30 minutes from Burnaby. Without traffic, the drive is really smooth and easy.
Jia Plus10 Osprey Village is a new development in Pitt Meadows right by the river. It reminded me of a quaint little seaside village, similar to Steveston but a lot more quieter, community focused, and no salt water smell.

There is one central street, which is lined with little boutique stores. There is also plenty of parking, and also a big parking lot for visitors!
Jia Plus9If you didn’t already guess by the name, Jia Plus serves Asian style beverage and snacks. All the syrups are made daily by Vicky, and the teas are brewed fresh! The price is really reasonable as well.

Jia Plus1The cafe has five tables inside and does not feel cramped at all. There are also a couple of patio seats, which are perfect for the summer! The high ceilings and warm lights makes it feel very comfortable.

The artwork inside the cafe is actually a partnership with a local art gallery down the block, and customers are able to purchase the original pieces.
Jia Plus5Passion fruit green tea w/ pearls: It had all the qualities that I looked for in a bubble tea, and more. The jasmine green tea and a really fragrant and floral flavour, which is my absolute favourite when it comes to green tea. I am very picky about my jasmine green tea and this one tasted absolutely perfect. In addition, the pearls had the perfect chewy consistency and tasted fresh.

Unfortunately, I don’t recall exactly what my friends ordered. However, they all also really enjoyed their drinks!
Jia Plus6Ramen: Apart from the drinks, Jia Plus also has some food items as well! The majority of us ordered the ramen. Vicky cooks the broth from scratch, and you can really taste the quality in it. The ramen also comes with a slice of tender pork, egg, and bamboo shoots. It was very comforting and filling, perfect for the cloudy day when we visited.
Jia Plus7BBQ Chicken Rice Bowl: I know, it doesn’t look like a rice bowl right? The rice was actually underneath the greens! Sadly, I didn’t get to try this because the dressing had dairy in it. However, my friends are also all foodies and I trust their opinion when they said it was really good!
Jia Plus8Jia Plus also offers cute little macaroons!

All in all, Jia Plus is a fantastic little cafe with one of the best green teas in the Vancouver area. Everything is made with quality, and you can definitely taste it.

Tai (Thai?) One and the dragon monster waitress – Dine Out Vancouver Festival

January 21, 2016

When my friend messaged me and suggested we catch up over Dine Out, I haven’t seen him for awhile and wanted to catch up, so I said yes! I told him about my dairy restriction and that I would prefer an Asian place because they don’t cook with as much dairy. Luckily, both him and his wife wanted to try Tai One, a new Taiwanese restaurant opened by the city-famous Bubble World franchise!

Unfortunately, we all left with a negative first impression of the restaurant, including getting yelled at by one of the waitresses. Keep reading to see why.
Tai OneI made reservations for Dine Out two nights before. After finding some free parking (yay!), the boyfriend and I were really early. We both weren’t sure if we wanted to order from the Dine Out or regular menu, and took quite a long time deciding so I’m glad that we arrived first.

I also find it hard to write a relevant review during DOVF because most places have specialty dishes that aren’t served after the festival. Luckily, this wasn’t the case at Tai One as their regular menu options were offered in the Dine Out menu!
Tai One2The restaurant looked very new, was very spacious, and felt very comfortable. You can see the middle tables they have there that store the napkins, cutlery, etc, but they decorated the top to make the place look a bit more modern.

We were also a bit confused as to what the official name of this restaurant was. Their menus and signage was a mix between Tai One and Thai One. Inconsistency really irks me, please stick with a correct name, people!!
Tai One 4Chicken and prawn spring roll w/ miso-based sauce: A couple of us ended up ordering this as our DOVF appetizer. The server let us know that she accidentally gave us two extra spring rolls, and that it was supposed to come with just four.

I found the spring roll to be very fresh, crunchy, and bursting with flavourful ingredients. I love prawn spring rolls, so having the chicken and veggies inside was an extra bonus! However, I did find the spring rolls to be very oily. The bottom of the bowl was dripping with oil near the end. I found the sauce to be a bit bland, and enjoyed the spring rolls without the sauce.
Tai One 5Green curry w/ jumbo prawns: Can you tell that I like prawns yet?! Not going to lie, the prawns solidified my decision in ordering this dish. I was impressed with the amount of prawn they had in this dish! In addition, the prawns were juicy, fresh, and had a nice snappy ‘bounce’ to them.

The green curry itself was a delicious aromatic and spicy affair. I wasn’t expecting it to be this spicy, and I am pretty tolerant of spice. I had to pace myself to eat really slow due to the rising heat levels of the curry. The coconut milk made it creamy and rich too.

Marinated chilled tofu: I loved the side dish as well. It was also spicy, but had a hint of sweetness too! It was a great addition to the plate and came with freshly chopped green onions.
Tai One 6Taiwanese Basil Chicken Stir Fry w/ rice and side dish: My friend found the chicken stir fry to be pretty spicy, even though it didn’t specify on the Dine Out menu. However, he enjoyed his dish.

Instead of rice, he asked to substitute salad, which the waitress agreed to originally. However, steamed rice arrived and after asking for salad again, they came back and brought him two of the same side dishes instead. Okay….?  At that point, he just decided to eat the two side dishes because service was becoming increasingly slow, and staff seemed really rushed (although it wasn’t that busy)…..
Tai One 7BBQ Pork Jowl: The boyfriend and my other friend both ordered the same dish. They both loved the pork jowl. It had a nice grilled flavour to it, and wasn’t too fatty. It was also cut up into nice individual bite sized pieces already.

Their dish also came with the same delicious marinated chilled tofu!

Here is where things go bad…

As I mentioned above, service was becoming increasingly slow so my friend didn’t bother letting them know about their mistake. At this point, service was pretty much nonexistent. After our main courses, we sat and waited for our dessert for at least thirty minutes. We didn’t really mind since we were busy chatting, but still wanted to make sure they didn’t forget.

After trying to wave a waitress down multiple times, we finally asked if our dessert was coming. She said yes. Then, she came back a few minutes later letting us know that the dessert we ordered was sold out. Instead, she offered us two dessert items on the menu or bubble tea. This came out to a slightly better deal for us because the main dessert items were bigger than the DOVF dessert.
Tai One 9Matcha red bean shaved ice: After hearing our original desserts were sold out, my two friends decided on splitting this. It looked really good, but they said it was disappointing.

Normally, this would cost $10 and it is definitely NOT worth the price. We all thought that it was real mango chunks, which would make the $10 price more justifiable. Much to my friend’s dismay, it was actually just the cheap, jello, mango chunks! As my friend said, they could make this at home for half the price.
Tai One 8Fresh coconut pudding (large size): Not much else I could order, since the other desserts all had dairy and the tofu pudding was sold out. This dessert was better than the ripoff  one my friends ordered above.

The inside was coconut pudding, similar to jello but with a creamier and thicker texture due to the fatty coconut milk. There was also fresh chunks of coconut meat throughout the dessert. Topped with oreo crumbs and dried coconut flakes, I haven’t had such a delicious dairy free dessert in ages. It gives me hope that I can enjoy desserts again.

Here is where it gets even worse.

Dragon monster waitress story:

So, remember how I told you all that we were informed the tofu pudding was sold out? Yup. After telling us that, the next two tables after us proceeded to get their tofu puddings. WHAT?! We were so confused. Why would you tell us that it was sold out, then give it to the next two tables after us?

I also mentioned that service was becoming nonexistent. At this point, we just wanted the bill. Again, it was really hard to waive a server down even though it wasn’t that busy. Finally, our bill came.

Since we were all curious as to why the tables after us got the ‘sold out’ dessert, we very politely asked the server why. After we asked her, her mood changed from ‘rushed and don’t care about you’ to dragon monster. I kid you not.

She got EXTREMELY defensive, saying that they ordered before us (they didn’t,we were there first and ordered first, but we weren’t going to push it because she was already really mad), she gave us extra spring roll by accident, and that HE (*points angrily at the boyfriend* LOL) didn’t even order Dine Out and gave us the larger desserts.

Keep in mind that we weren’t being rude or angry at all, and I was actually really satisfied with the new dessert. After having been in customer service for 5+ years, I am very mindful of the way I’m perceived by servers. I never treat servers rudely because I know how it feels. We were simply asking her a question and didn’t find a need to lash out.

FYI: In the beginning, I overheard one of the waiters saying to walk-in customers that DOVF required a reservation, in order to ensure they had enough dessert for DOVF customers. We made a reservation, but still didn’t get one? Interesting.

—

I would love to give them a 5/5 rating because the food was cooked exceptionally well, but it’s not just about the food. It’s about the ambiance, service, and overall experience. However, service was nonexistent for most of our meal, and very rushed/careless when they came. Then, we got yelled at from the waitress for a simple question so I’m not too sure if I would want to come back. Was a very interesting experience indeed.

Thanks for reading!
