The Viet Noodle Guy

October 16, 2018

The Viet Noodle Guy has been on my radar for about a month now. It is a new Vietnamese restaurant that opened up by Brentwood, in the same complex as Brown’s Social House and across from Madison Center.

The reason why I wanted to try it was because a) it was new, b) it looked clean and modern, and c) it had a high rating of 4.5 stars on Yelp already. Smores and the boyfriend were down to try it too, so we went one weekday evening.

There is free underground parking in the building, which was nice. Walking in, it was spacious in there due to the very high ceilings.

They had nice, matching decor going on and there was also a small balcony upstairs where they make their banh mi. We were wondering whether or not customers were able to walk upstairs and order banh mi, or was it for takeout customers?

Popcorn shrimp: It’s been awhile since I’ve seen popcorn shrimp in awhile! I don’t know why I was expecting American style popcorn shrimp, but it was different than I expected. It was more of the Chinese style and I would describe it more as a deep fried shrimp instead of popcorn shrimp.

They came fresh and crunchy, and bursting with garlic flavour. It tasted like Chinese deep fried shrimp, which I am definitely not complaining about because it’s one of my guilty pleasures, although it’s been awhile I ate it because #health. There was also a thick sweet chili dipping sauce too, which went well with the shrimp.

Viet noodle with rare beef and tripe P5: I wanted to see how their pho was. There was a generous portion of rare beef and tripe, and I was really full after this bowl.

Broth-wise, I found it to be pretty salty and flat, but still satisfying. It could have used more herbs because it mainly tasted like a beef broth without the standard herbs they add.

House special vermicelli bowl: Smores and the boyfriend ordered the house special vermicelli bowl, which was a lot better than mine! It came with so much stuff- lemongrass chicken, beef, pork patty AND spring rolls! To make things better, all the meat was seasoned perfectly and so deliciously juicy. As for the spring rolls, it was crispy and full of meat too.

The Viet Noodle Guy is a decent choice if you’re wanting Vietnamese food. In particular, it seems their vermicelli bowls are quite popular, and for good reason too! I can see us coming back to the Viet Noodle Guy if we’re feeling like not going to our usual Vietnamese place, Basil Garden.

Service was also attentive, quick and friendly here too! And easy, convenient, free parking is great as well 🙂

Yay!

Mui Ngo Gai Vietnamese Restaurant

October 13, 2018

I really enjoy eating Vietnamese food – it is delicious, cheap, and filling! One night, I was feeling like trying a place that we haven’t gone to and trying out other Vietnamese dishes that weren’t a pho or lemongrass dish. After some Yelping, we came up with Mui Ngo Gai because they had a big menu offering different types of Vietnamese food that we don’t usually order, and a high rating online!

Mui Ngo Gai is located on Kingsway and Victoria, where there is a plethora of Vietnamese establishments. There was easy street parking outside and along the small streets, and they also have a small parking lot that could probably fit about 3-4 cars in the back.

Steamed pork and shrimp tapioca dumpling: I was in the mood to try something new, so I ordered this! Well, it backfired on me because it wasn’t what I was expecting. It came with tiny dried shrimp and a very small amount pork. The texture of the tapioca was very sticky and goopy too. I ended up only eating one, and packing up the rest for my parents. No regrets ordering it though, I wanted to try something different!
Spring rolls: The boyfriend ordered his usual spring rolls to go with his pho. They were served differently than what we were used to, in that they use the smooth spring roll skin instead of the rough skin. Taste wise inside, they were delicious and had a decent amount of filling inside!
Rare beef and flank pho, large: The boyfriend was quite satisfied with his pho! He marveled at the quality of the beef flank and rare beef. It was a comforting bowl of noodles which filled him up.
Crispy prawn & fish patty soup: Continuing my adventurous streak that night, I ordered a bowl of noodles that I haven’t had before! For those who haven’t had this before, I would best describe it as large flat pieces of fish cake with some prawn. I found it delicious because I love my seafood!

Soup wise, the broth was light and had a hint of tomato and sweetness. The fresh dill was a nice addition to the soup and gave it more dimension. It was also my first time having Vietnamese water celery, which I would describe was a thinner version of regular celery.

All in all, our meal at Mui Ngo Gai was tasty and left us satisfied. The service was quick and friendly as well. I would love to try more Vietnamese places in the Kingsway/Victoria area as there seems to be a lot!

Yay!

Rio Brazilian Steakhouse

October 10, 2018

Once in awhile, you come across a delicious restaurant and can’t stop thinking about it for days afterwards. This was Rio Brazilian Steakhouse for me! When Cheese randomly suggested this, we all wanted to check it out! I made reservations online for us the following week!

There are two locations – one in downtown on Denman, and one in Coquitlam. We went with the Coquitlam one because parking would be easier to find, and it was free! The restaurant was spacious and comfortable. They have live performances on Friday and Saturday nights, which you can see from my photo above!

Prior to the performances, the lighting in the restaurant was very dim – which led to a problem, as I’ll explain below.

Rio Brazilian Steakhouse is an all you can eat restaurant. Servers walk around with different cuts of meat and will keep serving you until you flip over your green card to a red card.
This is where all of their meats are prepared! After they are cooked, servers will walk around with one of those sticks and go to each table until all the meat is gone (which is pretty fast!)
They also have a self serve buffet bar. Your typical carb dishes, soup, rice, veggies, and some fruit.
Now the part we have all been waiting for: the MEAT! There are many servers walking around, and we didn’t have to wait any more than 5 minutes for someone to be walking around.

I can’t tell just by looking at the photos which type of beef it was. This was either the alcatra, which is a rump steak, or the fraldina, which is a skirt steak.

It was so incredibly juicy, rich, and served medium rare. Full of delicious seasonings too.
Another one of their delicious juicy steaks being served! Please note the boyfriend’s patient hands in the background, LOL.
Maminha: Although smaller than the rest, the tri tip was the favourite among the five of us. It was roasted, so the outside was a bit grilled and crispy.

Meanwhile, the inside was so juicy!
Calabresa: Perhaps the only meat that we weren’t a fan of that night. We found the pork sausage to be very dry.
Ribs: I don’t normally have ribs, but I’m starting to slowly eat more. After one bite, Cocoa told me I HAD to try it, so I had a bite. The ribs melted right off the bone, and was so tender.

I’m glad that the server was still cutting pieces for everyone else, because I ended up getting my own piece after too.
Deep fried platains and cheese balls: Halfway through the meal, our server dropped off some snacks! We didn’t really eat these as we wanted to have more of the meat.
Salad: After all that meat, I decided to go and get a plate of veggies to feel better. The veggies were really fresh and the lettuce was crunchy.

The basil and feta sprinkled on the watermelon was a nice addition, and brought out the sweetness of the watermelon. It isn’t something I normally would have tried myself, so I’m glad I had a chance to try it here.
Grilled pineapple with cinnamon: My apologies for the terrible quality of this photo. I forgot to take a photo of it, so this is a screenshot from an Instagram boomerang.

Sangria and Lager came earlier this year, and both said that we all had to try the pineapple with cinnamon! It took awhile (compared to the meats) for the servers to come around with this, as it was gone after one table.

The cinnamon went really well with the pineapple! It was so good that I asked for two slices. The cinnamon made the pineapple even sweeter. Next time I have pineapple, I wouldn’t mind dusting it with cinnamon before eating.

All in all, we were very satisfied and happy after our dinner at Rio. Some of the meats were pretty salty, so I would recommend having a side of veggies with it. It’s probably a place that you would want to come once a year, when you want to have something different.

The only negative thing I encountered was that the lighting was very dim, which led to one problem. The photos above were edited to make them a lot brighter… so you have an idea of how dark it was in there.

After ordering the chicken, it looked a bit pink and raw… so I used my phone’s flashlight to check. To my shock, the inner part of the drumstick was completely raw and bloody! I know that sometimes meat can be pink and it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unsafe to eat (sous vide meat comes out pink), but this time the chicken was bloody.

I was very glad that I checked! So if you do come here, I would recommend checking that you aren’t eating raw chicken! Or maybe just stick with the beef steaks because they were SO DELICIOUS.
Yay!

Bandidas Taqueria

October 7, 2018

Back in the summer while planning a catchup with J, she suggested that we go to Bandidas Taqueria. Bandidas is one of her favourite restaurants in Vancouver, and she is not a vegetarian/vegan either!

Bandidas also seems like it is one of the staple and classic restaurants along Commercial Drive. I’m always down to try new places for my blog, so off we went one summer evening.

Almond horchata: I’ve had horchata at 3 different restaurants now (Sal Y Limon, Vallarta’s, and now Bandidas), and have noticed that each restaurant has it’s own spin on horchata. So, I’m not too sure what traditional horchata is supposed to taste like at this rate, but I ain’t complaining because it’s been delicious at all three places so far.

I didn’t want too much milk because I never know how my stomach will react to it, so it was a safer choice to get the almond milk. It was not as creamy which was expected, but there was still the familiar cinnamon and other various spices in there. There was a lot of ice which took away from the value of the drink, so I would recommend getting it with less ice (for better value and flavour).

Mix and match tacos: The first plate of tacos – I can’t remember or distinguish who’s plate this was. Also, I don’t remember which tacos I ordered. However, I will say that they were enjoyable and tasty even without meat. I can tell why J likes coming here as a non-vegetarian!

They were quite full when you wrap it up, and it got a bit messy. But no regrets.

Mix and match tacos: The second plate of tacos. J has 3 go-to taco types here, which she ordered.

If you’re a fan of vegetarian or vegan food, I would recommend checking out Bandidas. They have a great and unique selection of tacos, and also other Mexican food.

The one thing I did not like was the service. The staff were giving off a pretentious vibe and were also standoffish. It was a struggle to order, ask for more water, and get the bill. So, you have been warned if you come here! J has also mentioned that the only thing she doesn’t like about this place is the service.

Yay for the food, nay for the service.

Ginger Sushi

October 4, 2018

I have itching for a new sushi place to try, for the sake of this blog and because I have been going to the same sushi places for awhile now (aka Osaka Sushi). When Cocoa suggested sushi, I went on the trusty Yelp app to see which places we could try. Ginger Sushi came up, so I called and made a reso for 5 people the following week!

Going in, we were all surprised at how small and cramped it was! There was probably only 6 tables, all tightly squished together. We were really cramped, so this place would be good for a table of 2 or 3 I would say.
Salmon and tuna sashimi: We ordered two of these to share. The sashimi was very fresh and tasty. Cheese really enjoyed the sashimi and said it was better than other places, which were more expensive than Ginger Sushi. He contemplated ordering another plate to himself but decided against it.
Yes roll: I didn’t want to leave without trying one of their speciality rolls! This is the yes roll, which came with yam tempura inside, topped with spicy tuna and mango soy sauce. The star of the roll was the mango soy sauce. It was unique, and turned the otherwise simple roll into a creative one.  The burst of sweet mango went well with the savoury aspect of the roll.
Under The Sea Roll: Cocoa likes specialty rolls, which is another reason I picked this restaurant because they had a huge selection of unique rolls! Under The Sea roll came with scallop, salmon, crab, jellyfish, tobiko, seaweed, and mango soy sauce. She had no complaints about this roll, and it looked like it was a pretty good value considering how much seafood it came with.
BC Roll: The BC roll was made differently, in that it contained salmon meat instead of salmon skin. Salmon meat is worth more, but the boyfriend preferred salmon skin in his BC roll.

Tuna & smoked salmon roll: This roll should have just been called the smoked salmon roll! All we could taste was the smoked salmon.

Negitoro roll: The negitoro roll was a bit bigger here than other restaurants. It came with a decent amount of tuna and the onions were fresh. It wasn’t super fatty and soft like how negi usually is though.

Bento box: Macaroni ordered a bento box for herself. It was pretty big and filling! She had no complaints about her box. The tempura looked really good and was massive!

Oh yeah, it also came with a side of california roll! They were a miniature size which was cute, and a perfect size because there was a lot of other food in her bento box. The avocado was ripe and delicious.
Miso soup: Macaroni’s bento box came with a miso soup. She didn’t want it, so she kindly gave it to me. It was pretty salty, even for my liking. I did not end up finishing it because of how salty it was.

Chopped scallop roll: The chopped scallop roll lacked the fresh ‘snap’. It was average.

Cocoa’s chopped scallop cone
A cute little addition that gave Ginger Sushi some character was that they keep personalized chopsticks for their regular customers! I assume that when regulars come, they take their chopsticks right off the wall.

Overall, Ginger Sushi was decent but some rolls were a miss. It is pretty small and tight, so I would only recommend for small groups under 4 (probably only 2 people actually). It would not be my top pick but if I was in this area again or someone wanted to go, I would be down.

Yay!
