Brown Bites – Boba Essence

March 17, 2019

Brown Bites is a mini series on my blog featuring places the boyfriend has tried without me, so it wouldn’t be my own review. Why the name Brown, you ask? It is named after the Japanese LINE character, Brown. Brown is a cute, shy, emotionless cartoon bear but secretly full of love, and we adore him to pieces!

One night while hanging out with Maki, Nigiri, and Burger, we were craving bubble tea (what else is new? bubble tea is life) so we decided to order delivery.

My stomach was acting up (again, what else is new?) so I opted out that evening. I didn’t miss out on much because they were all quite disappointed with this place!

The actual store is located in Olympic Village. It is one of the only bubble tea shops in this area. Since we ordered delivery, I can’t comment on the store or service.

Roasted milk tea with pearls: The boyfriend ordered this, but was disappointed. While it had a decent tea flavour, it was wayyyy too sweet to enjoy. The straw was too small for the pearls, so he had a hard time getting them.

Oolong milk tea with pearls

Hochija milk tea with pearls

Earl grey milk tea with grass jelly

The rest of them did not enjoy their bubble tea either, commenting that it was way too sweet.

When I asked everyone if they would have it again, everyone said they rather go order from somewhere else. If they were in Olympic Village and happened to walk by, then possibly if the bubble tea craving was strong enough. Otherwise, there are a lot more and better options in Vancouver for bubble tea.

Glad I opted out for once!

Essence Liquid Lipstick

February 5, 2017

Sooo… I had taken these photos back in October, but completely forgot about them until I was clearing out my phone photos! But, better late than never right? I bought two of the essence liquid lipsticks to try out for my failed October lipstick challenge. They were only $3.50 each which is a really good deal.

Ever since I discovered essence, I’ve been raving about it non-stop. So far, I’ve tried their eyebrow pencil, lip liners, lipsticks, and now, the liquid lipstick. The crazy thing is that the total price I spent on 7 products has been under $40!

What it says (Taken from essence website):
Liquid love! This NEW formula combines the best of both lipstick and lipgloss. Get the impact and coverage of a lipstick with the moisturizing shine of a gloss.

For $3.50, the packaging was very good quality. It came in a sturdy clear tube so you could see how much product you had left and what shade was inside. The lid was stamped with the essence ‘e’.

Application: With the term liquid lipstick, I was expecting it to be more pigmented than it was. These are definitely more on the lip gloss side and applied sheenly. I had to use 3 swipes to get a pigmented colour. Even then, it was a bit difficult to have an even application because with every swipe, the colour would move around on your lips.

Wear: I could definitely feel that I was wearing product, as it felt a bit sticky like lip gloss. Maybe if I only wore 1 layer I wouldn’t feel it, but then it would just look like a clear sheen. They transferred easily and did not last that long.
Wearing 05 peach party.

Wearing 02 beauty secret.

  • Very affordable, only $3.50 each
  • Great study packaging and design
  • Great shine

  • Definitely not a liquid lipstick, should have been marketed as a lip gloss
  • Not pigmented enough to be a liquid lipstick

Yay as a lipgloss, nay as a liquid lipstick. So maybe a meh? Haha!

With the term liquid lipstick, I had much higher expectations and it fell short. However, this would be a decent lip gloss for the price. It would look nice over a lipstick for an added sheen!

So, I would recommend this as a lip gloss but not a liquid lipstick!

Product purchased by myself. Opinions are own.

Introduction to essence cosmetics

July 31, 2016

I’ve been hearing such great things about essence cosmetics, and decided that it was finally time that I tried some of their products myself. essence cosmetics (Not a typo, the ‘e’ is a lowercase) prides itself on quality makeup products, at extremely affordable prices. They are a German brand that launched in the US in 2008, reaching Canadian shelves in 2012.

Today, I’ll be talking about the essence products that I purchased recently! I’ve come to really like the brand and can definitely see myself trying other products in the upcoming months.
Essence Cosmetics Lipstick Liplineressence lipliner ($1.99 CAD): The lipliners were the first thing I tried from essence. For $2, I definitely think they are worth it and they do last a good amount of time (3+ hours without eating/touching). I love that they are really pigmented, and glide on your lips really easily. I really wish they had more than four shades!

essence long lasting lipstick ($2.99 CAD): I already have way more lipstick than I need, but I was really curious as to how this one was. So, I went out of my comfort zone and bought a colour I don’t normally wear- a bright, coral pink! The lipstick is very moisturizing, and creamy. I find that this shade goes on a bit clear, so I normally go over it 4 times to get the shade it actually is.

essence eyebrow designer ($1.99 CAD): I was looking for a new brow pencil to try, and didn’t want to splurge so it was the perfect opportunity to buy the eyebrow designer! I was really impressed with this. Just like the lipliners, the brow pencil glided on really easily, and was very pigmented. I was out for 12 hours, and this did not smudge one bit. However, I took a nap with this on once, and it did smudge off a bit – woke up with less eyebrows, haha!! essenceCan you believe I only spent a total of $12 CAD for all FOUR of these products?! In the picture above, I am wearing one of the lip liners and the coral lipstick. On my computer screen, the lipstick looks a bit darker, probably due to the screen resolution and brightness settings.

Anyways, my first impression with essence is that I absolutely LOVE their products! As a beauty lover who is also a student with no job right now, I love that I can buy makeup products without feeling guilty. If you haven’t tried essence, I highly suggest you go to your local Shoppers Drug Mart and try some now! You won’t be disappointed.

yay-nay-or-meh

Yay!

Beauty: Four Brands I Have Discovered Through Blogging

January 31, 2018

Four may seem like a bit of a random number, but the reason why I chose four is because it is my four year blogiversary today! Yup, four years ago, I created this lil blog… with no idea what I would have in store.

It’s crazy how this blog has been such an integral part of my life and identity now. I never expected to be this involved with it but it combines my love of writing and sharing what I know.

In celebration of my four years of blogging, I thought I would share four of my absolute favourite brands that I have discovered (through beauty bloggers or as PR products). This does not include brands that I have heard of prior to blogging!

Amie:  I feel like this brand came as quickly as it disappeared… LOL I say this because  I was told that they were launching in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart, but I haven’t seen there products on shelf either. I asked the beauty counter and called a couple stores too, and they were confused.

Anyways, I ran out of their mask which I love for spot treatment (seriously kills pimples overnight) so I just ordered off Amazon and they shipped it from the UK. Their other face products are pretty good and affordable as well.

KORRES: Wild Rose Brightening Oil. Need I say more?! <3

essence: I discovered this brand off other bloggers, who raved about their affordability and effectiveness. For $2, the eyebrow pencil is great and lasts all day (as long it doesn’t get wet).

Seche Vite: Again, I discovered this off other bloggers as a great top coat, and I haven’t looked back since purchasing a bottle off of Nail Polish Canada. It’s the only top coat I use. My nail polish lasts for days, before it used to only last a day which was annoying.

30 Beauty Questions Tag

July 7, 2017

I have some reviews in store this month, but I wanted to do more of a chatty, get to know me type beauty post. I found this one off The Beauty Section so all credits to their website!

30 Beauty Questions Tag

1 // Do you remember your first makeup item?

Hmm…. probably something from Claire’s! How I used to love Claire’s growing up! I loved their eye shadow palette and remembering using it before the school dances LOLOL.

2 // Describe your perfect mascara. Have you found one that fits your specifications?

I am very picky about mascara… and it’s not by choice, either. Mascaras tend to clump on me and I don’t even know why. In fact, I didn’t do a mascara review for 3 years because all mascaras I tried were the same! Until I found the Maybelline Lash Sensation. You can read my review here.

I just realized the answer didn’t really relate to the question… so my specifications would be one that lengthens, does not smear, and does not clump.

3 // What kind of coverage do you prefer from foundation?

I don’t wear foundation on a daily basis, probably occasionally now… but I have drastically cut back this year. My skin went through a sensitive stage in the winter and I’m trying not to wear much face products to make it flare up again.

However, when I do wear foundation, I prefer medium to full coverage. Since I don’t wear it often, go big or go home! I much prefer to stay home (and Netflix).

4 // Favorite high end brand?

Urban Decay 🙂 I don’t think I’ve tried a product from UD that I haven’t liked yet, and I’ve tried a lot! See what I’ve reviewed from UD here.

5 //What cosmetic brands have you always wanted to try but still haven’t?

Deciem! Heard so many great things about the brand in the blogosphere.

6 // Favorite drugstore brand?

ELF and Maybelline!

7 // Do you wear fake eyelashes?

I wear glasses everyday, which makes it hard to. But I do sometimes when I wear contacts. They’re so fun!

8 // Is there any kind of makeup you can’t leave the house without?

I leave the house sometimes with no makeup… so no? But if I didn’t, it would have to be my eyebrows.

9 // What is your most cherised beauty product?

My Kat Von D liner! It’s my holy grail liner and I’ve repurchased it more times than I can count.

10 // How often do you shop for makeup? Do you like to pick up an item here and there or get lots of goodies at once?

Surprisingly, I don’t shop for make up often. I like to browse when I’m shopping, but I’ll only buy something if it’s either really cheap, or I’ve done research. Rarely do I spontaneously buy a high end product for no reason.

11 // Do you have a “beauty budget” or you spend freely?

Since I don’t buy makeup often (my last purchase was 7 months ago), I would say I spend freely. If I was to buy products more often, such as once a week, then I would definitely have a beauty budget.

12 // Do you utilize coupons, rewards cards and sales when you shop for cosmetics?

If it’s online shopping, then yes. I only buy online if there’s free shipping codes.

13 // What type of product do you buy the most of?

Well I use my essence eyebrow pencil every day… so I go through that quickly! Second would be Kat Von D tattoo liner. Pictured below with some other essence products!

14 // Is there a brand that you absolutely can’t stand?

Haha!!! Hmm…. Let me think… I don’t think so actually. There have been brands with disappointing products, but none that I absolutely can’t stand.

15 // Do you avoid certain ingredients in cosmetics like parabens or sulfates?

Nope

16 // Do you have a favorite place to shop for makeup?

Sephora!

17 // Do you like trying new skincare products or do you keep a certain routine?

I enjoy trying new skincare products so that I have reviews to share on my blog, but my skin is also quite sensitive these days which is why I try to limit the amount of new skin products I expose them to. When I’m not reviewing skincare products, I stick to a routine of my trusted moisturizers.

18 // Favorite bath and body brand?

Right now, it’s definitely Weleda! I discovered them through blogging last month and can’t get enough of their Evening Primose body wash. I only reviewed the Evening Primose day and night cream, but here is a picture of what the line looks like. The body wash has the same packaging but in a larger size.

19 // If you could only buy from one brand, which brand would you choose?

Kind of similar to question 4! Urban Decay hands down. I’ve tried many of their products, and have yet to be disappointed. I can definitely trust them to come out with reliable products.

20 // What brand do you think has the best packaging?

Cutest packaging award goes to Paul & Joe for sure!

21 // Which celebrity always has great makeup?

I don’t really follow celebrity make up trends or looks… but if I was to pick, the first that comes to mind is Kylie Jenner. Her makeup snaps are gorgeous and her Kylie products are great too!

22 // Do you belong to any online makeup communities?

Hmm… does Instagram count? Yes, I’m going to say it does. Apart from Instagram, the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network, and some other Facebook blogging groups but they aren’t make up related.

23 // 5 Favorite Beauty Gurus

I don’t watch beauty gurus much so I can’t give you five! I only watch Weylie regularly 🙂

24 // Do you like multifunctional products like lip and cheek stains?

Yes! Why not? It’s a better value. Pictured below is one of my favourite beauty products ever. The Korres wild rose oil moisturizes my skin really well. When mixed in with a foundation, it gives my skin a beautiful, non-cakey dewy look!

25 // Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?

Nope

26 // Do you use makeup base/primer for the eyes?

Yes, always. My eyes get pretty oily.

27 // How many hair products do you use on a typical day?

On a typical day, I don’t use hair products. I’m boring. But I use Batiste dry shampoo sometimes!

28 // What do you apply first, concealer or foundation?

Concealer!

29 // Do you ever consider taking makeup classes?

Nope.

30 // What do you love about makeup?

I love that there are so many options and styles you can choose from, depending on your mood and preference. I also love that it gives me something to write about, because I love writing. It’s also a good conversation piece.

Again, credits to The Beauty Section for this fun tag. I would love to see your version as well, so let me know if you do this tag too.
