Jethro’s Fine Grub – Fraser Street Location

Hi all!!

I have driven by this place many times, and always see it completely packed. I’ve also heard it was really good so I decided to finally check this place out for brunch. After reading the reviews, I was prepared on what to order and what not to order.

This place was also featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins, and Drives which automatically gives it a higher rating BUT a lot of people said it was very disappointing and did not meet their expectations. So, I came here with low expectations but somehow we left still feeling disappointed and unsatisfied.

IMG_1707.JPGWe came after the lunch rush around 1 pm, and luckily did not have to wait. The restaurant is pretty small and cramped with very plain decor. Actually, there’s not much decor than the big chalkboard wall. They could really use some decor to make this place feel more comfortable and welcoming.
IMG_1540.JPGStarted off with the corned beef hash with poached eggs, served with my choice of rye bread. Nothing in this dish really stood out to me and it was really meh, especially the corned beef. The corned beef also came out in little tiny, dry crumpled pieces.
IMG_1539.JPGThe second dish was a lot better, though – smoked salmon eggs benedict with potatoes. The eggs benny was flavourful, with a rich hollandaise sauce but the potatoes were lacking in flavour. They were also very dry and starchy, they could have peeled off more of the potato skin as well.

Yes I know that some restaurants leave the potato skin on and I do enjoy potato skin, but all my tongue could taste or feel was potato skin and nothing else.
IMG_1542.JPGContinuing on to even more mediocre-ness, was our side of sausages. They were your typically greasy, oily breakfast sausages that you would expect at a free 3 star hotel breakfast. Good if it’s free, but I wouldn’t want to have to pay for these.

But at this point, we finished it all since there wasn’t anything good other than the smoked salmon benny.

Lastly, we ordered a side of pancakes because I read that it was a “must order” and it was their specialty. If this is their “specialty”, then clearly it needs some work because these were really mediocre and disappointing as well.

They had a rich buttermilk flavour to it, but they weren’t fluffy at all. All of the pancakes were also a bit burnt. You would try to cut it up but the burnt bottom part would stick to the plate and it just became a mess. To add to this, the inside looked a bit undercooked so they probably cooked it on too much high heat, resulting in a burnt exterior but raw interior.

Needless to say, our visit was really disappointing and we probably won’t be coming back. There was no sense of quality preparation in any of the dishes except for the smoked salmon benny. We had already braced ourselves that this place wouldn’t be amazing, but I didn’t think it would be THAT disappointing, especially for a restaurant that had been featured on The Food Network.

The Truffle House & Cafe

Hi everyone!

I know this is a bit late… but I hope you all had a good long weekend! I sure did, I spent the weekend discovering new restaurants and playing tourist in my own city. There are so many little nooks and crannies in the Lower Mainland, you can’t possibly be bored here on a sunny day.

Urbanspoon told me that The Truffle House had really good ratings, and was a popular place for brunch so we decided to stop by here!

IMG_2465.JPGThe restaurant is easy to miss, it is located in Dundarave Village on the main stretch of stores. The Truffle House was quite narrow and long too, and was full when we arrived. Luckily, they had their solarium open for overflow and we took the last spot there. The entire place was very clean and service was very friendly throughout our whole visit.
IMG_2468.JPGAre you surprised that when I saw smoked salmon on the menu, I ordered it right away? You shouldn’t be because I am the biggest salmon lover ever! West Coast benny – house smoked salmon, two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and home fried potatoes.

There was a generous amount of smoked salmon, and it was delicious. I requested my eggs to be poached medium-hard and it was perfect to my liking. As well, the hollandaise sauce was buttery and flavourful. The home fried potatoes were quite good as well – crispy, and well seasoned with a lot of herbs! I was satisfied and full after eating this.

IMG_2466.JPGThe boyfriend ordered the eggs benny – which was the same as mine but with smoked ham instead of smoked salmon. What looked good on paper unfortunately did not apply to what tasted good in his mouth – sadly, the ham was very bland and lacked flavour. I gave it a try and agreed that there was no flavour to the ham at all.

I’m glad that we got to try this place, as the service was very friendly and atmosphere was spot-on. My smoked salmon benny was delicious, but unfortunately the eggs benny could have done better with flavour. With that said, we wouldn’t mind coming back if we were in the area but the boyfriend would probably order something else instead.

Smoked salmon or smoked ham – which one do you prefer? =)

Sushi California

I have heard many great things about this restaurant, but never went to try it because I’m not in that area. One night, I was craving sushi and decided to finally come here after hearing Cheese rave about this place. House special rolls for around $5? Count me in!

We went a bit later and since it was a Friday evening, we knew for sure it would be busy.
aSushi California is located inside a small strip mall right across from Lougheed Mall. There is a small parking lot, but some spots are reserved for other merchants in the strip mall. I would imagine that the small parking lot gets pretty crazy during peak hours.

Anyways, we found parking with no problem since we got there around 8:30pm. To our surprise, there was still a lineup inside the restaurant! I thought that the restaurant was more spacious than I expected.

It was a typical Japanese restaurant, nothing really special about the decoration or interior design. But the food, now that’s a different story…! The two of us ended up over-ordering and had to pack half our food to go. We weren’t sure how big their portions were because it was our first time!
bThis was their box sushi, which came with shrimp, smoked salmon, scallop, and more things that I can’t remember anymore ($4.95). The sushi rice was pressed very nicely, giving the rice a great texture. It tasted very refreshing due to the lemon.

For $4.95, it was an amazing deal! Also, I ordered a single tobiko and salmon nigiri as well, which tasted fresh. Since we decided to not order a sashimi plate, I wanted to sample their sashimi and thought that it tasted pretty sweet and fresh.
cDeep fried california roll, or as they call it, the “crunch california roll”. It was lightly fried, and crispy. Overall, I thought it was okay due to the sauce, but the boyfriend preferred Sushi Mura’s because it was crunchier and there was also more sauce. But again, for $3.95, it was a good deal.
dUp next were our smoked salmon garlic roll ($4.50), chopped scallop roll ($3.95), and double spicy roll ($3.95). My favourite was the smoked salmon garlic roll because I am a huge fan of shrimp and smoked salmon!

I actually thought this roll tasted better the next day, because the rice absorbed the garlic overnight giving it more flavour. Some of the garlic flakes were also rock hard. The chopped scallop roll was pretty average. The double spicy roll came with spicy sashimi on top and in the inside. It wasn’t too spicy for me and I enjoyed the spicy tuna sashimi, as well as the crunchy flakes on top.
eLast but not least, our chicken karage ($3.95!!! WHAT SO CHEAP?!)! This was absolutely delicious. You think for $3.95, they would cheap out on small chicken wings but nope, these were the juicest and biggest chicken wings I’ve seen! They were super hot, the skin was crispy, and was perfectly seasoned. If I knew how good it tasted and how big the portion was for $3.95, I would have ordered this instead of one of the rolls!

Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to Sushi California. There were many servers working, and they were all attentive and knowledgeable. The most amazing thing about this place is their PRICE though. For $4, you can get their house specialty rolls and the size is not compromised. We paid under $30 for our dinner and we were in disbelief at how cheap everything was. I love Sushi California because their food is delicious, and it is easy on our student budgets.

Chez Meme Baguette Bistro, N. Burnaby

I have came here a few times already, but haven’t had the chance to blog about it since I only started my site three months ago! Chez Meme is a cute little locally owned French cafe along Hastings Street.

Once in awhile, they will open on weekends, which you can check on their menu board in store but otherwise, they are only open weekday morning & afternoons.
photo (3)We got there at 11am, where there were still a few seats open. I figured that because it was a rainy day, it wasn’t as busy as I expected it to be, but I’m glad that we made the reservation anyways.

After 15 minutes, a line started to form, so now I know what time is the best to go if I want to avoid the line up. As you can tell, the place is pretty small but it is also owned by a husband and wife team.

photoHere is one side of the menu, with all their delicious baguettes! They are well known for the baguettes, so it was obvious what my choice was.  Being a French cafe, they also have an extensive wine and espresso drink menu which is posted on their wall.
photo (2)After coming here many times, I had my heart set on the nordique baquette!  The nordique baguette consisted of smoked salmon, cream cheese, dill, and onion. It was the perfect combination.

Their baguettes were light and chewy, which complimented the heaviness of the cream cheese. Even then, there was a perfect amount of cream cheese to go with the smoked salmon. The dill and onion accentuated the flavours of the salmon and cream cheese, making everything in the baguette flourish.

For my choice of sides, I chose their soup because they always have really good soup. Today was the zucchini and basil soup, which tasted really flavourful. It had a puree texture to it. I enjoyed my dish very much, and have no complaints about it.
photo (1)The boyfriend chose the cordon bleu baguette, which consisted of black forest ham, chicken, emmenthal (type of cheese), and a dijon mustard sauce for dipping. The chicken was wrapped inside the ham, which was slightly grilled making some parts of the ham crispy and delicious. We both agreed that the dijon mustard was very overpowering. It almost tasted like wasabi!

There was a generous amount of fries, but they didn’t taste that great and were really oily. He regretted not ordering the soup, because mine was delicious. We both agreed that we are getting soup as a side next time we come here.

The only thing disappointing was the fries but that is easily overlooked when you take into account their other items. Even though there was only one server (the co-owner), she was very attentive and friendly.

She also speaks to you in French at times, which adds to the overall experience of a French bistro. Looking over at other table’s dishes also looked very delicious as well, I would love to try another item on their menu when I come back here!

Acme Cafe

I love brunch. I even eat brunch for dinner sometimes.! Maybe it’s just me, but having brunch is one of the best starts to a day. This visit was from awhile ago, but I had a lovely time at Acme Cafe.

Acme Cafe is undeniably one of the more popular places to have brunch in Vancouver. It is located in the DTES (Picture taken from www.flavourhunter.com).
IMG_7167I love the interior of Acme Cafe. It is very welcoming, clean, and simple. Acme cafe also offers a huge pastry selection as you can see! I don’t have that much of a sweet tooth, but it still looks very appetizing! Yum!
IMG_7161Baked eggs benny- $10.75. This is their signature dish, and it did not definitely did not disappoint! We were a bit surprised when it came out because we’ve never seen eggs benny done like this before.
IMG_7162Eggs sunny side up- $10.75. Read my blurb on their kitchen grill story below, it will relate to this dish! The eggs were cooked perfectly sunny side up. I love how there were onions on top since I am a huge fan of green onions.

My friend doesn’t like bacon so I was lucky enough to have it! The bacon was cooked well too, it wasn’t super oily or greasy. Underneath was the bed of hash browns which was perfectly seasoned as well. The side of fruit tasted really fresh too.
IMG_7160European breakfast – $9.50. This normally comes with proscuitto, but you were able to substitute it for smoked salmon at no charge. When I first saw this on the menu, I was sold because it had smoked salmon. My friend was going to order this too, but instead ordered the plate above because it sounded more filling and worth the price, which I agree.

The cantaloupe tasted pretty fresh, as did everything else. Overall, I thought that this plate was average. The smoked salmon, of course, was delicious, but I don’t think that it was worth $9.50. Maybe I should try it with the standard prosciutto next time…

One thing I found interesting about Acme is that they do not have a grill. The waitress pointed out their stove, which looked like the one from my own kitchen! I was quite impressed that they were able to run such a successful restaurant without a restaurant-stove top, but hey, they make it work so props to them!

All in all, I enjoyed our visit to Acme Cafe and would definitely come back here. I probably wouldn’t order the European breakfast again, but order the baked eggs benny which is their specialty.
