Curiously Carmen

The Poke Shop

December 1, 2016

Poke bowls are popping up everywhere in Vancouver now! When they first started to appear, I wasn’t sure what the hype was about. But now, I’ve grown an inkling to poke bowls because they are a healthy and filling alternative.

the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouver-interiorSo far, I’ve only tried two poke places in the city. The second place I tried was The Poke Shop, which opened a few weeks ago. It is located in Gastown, just by the steam clock.

It is a basement suite and you have to walk down some stairs. Once you get in, the decor is very cheerful and artsy, with a big mural on one side of the wall!

The long wooden communal table is also custom made, one of a kind too. I really liked the interior and it was spacious and comfortable to sit and dine.

the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouver-sashimiI haven’t been to enough poke shops to judge the prices, but I would say it’s fairly average? The only other place I’ve been to is The Poke Guy, and The Poke Guy is a bit more expensive because it is ocean-wise.

There are two sizes, large & super large. The large didn’t look filling enough for a meal, so most of us at the media tasting ordered the super large for dinner. But you’ll see soon enough that we were proven wrong!

Pictured above are the proteins! You can pick from ahi tuna, spicy albacore tuna, spicy Atlantic salmon, wild sockeye salmon, spicy baby scallop, unagi, grilled organic chicken, or roasted organic chicken.
the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouver-toppingsAfter selecting your base (purple rice, white rice, zoodles, spinach, or pick half/half) and protein, it is on to the toppings! I’m not going to list them all here because there are too many! But you can see from the picture above.
the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouver-bowlSuper large bowl w/ unlimited toppings, $15.95: For my two proteins, I got the albacore tuna and wild sockeye salmon. I chose purple rice as the base. Unlimited toppings were pomegranate, mango, watermelon, spinach, cucumber, corn and topped with shoyu dressing.

The proteins come pre-marinated, which seems to be the preferred option for most as it is the authentic method of making poke bowls. I found that there was only a slight marinated taste for the tuna and salmon, it tasted mostly like plain sashimi which is not necessarily a bad thing! Both proteins tasted really fresh.

As for the toppings, I liked the inclusion of both fruits (mango, pomegranate and watermelon) with veggies. It gave the bowl a burst of sweetness!

Even though it doesn’t look filling, there is a LARGE amount of purple rice at the bottom. After all, I did order the super large! I didn’t end up finishing the rice because there was such a big amount, and I wanted to eat the proteins & fruit/veggies first.
the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouver-food-bloggerHere are other poke bowls that some of the food bloggers ordered!
the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouver-drinksLeft to right: 3 berry & lemon soda, pineapple plantation iced tea, iced matcha green tea w/ honey, all $3 w/ poke bowl, or $4.50 solo.

I ordered the 3 berry & lemon soda, which was basically berry & lemon infused 7-up. My goodness, was it delicious! I was one of the only bloggers who ordered the soda, and received many comments about how good it looked.

I didn’t try the other two, but heard the pineapple plantation iced tea was okay. The iced matcha green tea was a bit disappointing, as we were expecting matcha. It tasted more like a sencha, or regular iced green tea.
the-poke-shop-gastown-vancouverOverall, The Poke Shop was good and I would recommend giving it a try! The portions are generous, while the restaurant is spacious with great interior design (a dining experience also includes the ambiance).

I would recommend getting the large bowl, as most of us who ordered the super large bowl couldn’t finish. As well, you are getting the same two scoops of protein in both sizes.

Crabtree and Evelyn Ultra-Moisturizing Hand Therapy

November 28, 2016

What a long and fancy name! The official name is actually spelled as moisturising with a ‘s’, but when I type that, WordPress lets me know it is spelled wrong? I’m just going to call it hand cream in my review for simplicity’s sake.

Anyway, this is my second tube of the Crabtree and Evelyn hand cream in the scent pomegranate, argan, and grapeseed. I don’t remember how I came across this, it might have been a gift or I used some and fell in love with it.

I’ve been using this product for around 1-2 years now, and keep it in my makeup bag everyday! I was actually looking for products to review and realized I hadn’t talked about this here yet, although I really love this hand cream.
crabtree-evelyn-ultra-moisturising-hand-therapy-creamI bought this in a gift set that came with a travel sized body wash, body lotion, and nail polish. Out of the four products in the gift bag, I liked this hand cream the most!

Starting off with the scent, this hand cream just smells amazing. It’s pretty girly and light. There have been many times where I put this cream on, and I have people around me asking if anyone sprayed perfume because it suddenly smells really good.

On top of the amazing scent, I love how lightweight and absorbing this cream is. Whenever my hands are super dry, I can rely on this cream to do its magic and turn my dry hands into something super soft and supple.
crabtree-evelyn-ultra-moisturising-hand-therapy-cream-argan-pomegranate-grapeseedOne thing I didn’t like about this hand cream was the packaging, but they have since repackaged it. The old cap did not close properly because the neck was too short, resulting in product oozing out around the edge. I am really glad they repackaged because I have no complaints about this new one!

With the holiday season coming up, this hand cream would make a great stocking stuffer. They also have great deals during the holiday season, where you can buy gift sets. I love gift sets because I have a hard time finishing full sized products.

Without a doubt, I will definitely be purchasing another Crabtree & Evelyn hand cream! But maybe next time, I will test out their other scents. Are there any C&E scents you would recommend?

1

  • Smells AMAZING
  • Very moisturizing, makes your hands feel super, super, super SOFT!
  • Absorbs quickly2
  • Expensive – prices range from $9 (25 grams) to $32 (250 grams). Definitely not drug store prices! However, I keep an eye out for sampler/gift/value sets to save some money. As well, the stores sometimes have 25% store wide discount to alleviate some wallet pain!

Pho D’Lite

November 24, 2016

A new pho restaurant has popped up in Burnaby! Well, not thaaat new, but it opened in the past year beside the Whole Foods in the Solo district. The name of the restaurant is Pho D’Lite, such a cute and punny name!

After hanging out at one of my friend’s condos at solo (such breathtaking views up there!), the boyfriend and I were starving. We didn’t want to drive anywhere because we were that hungry, and warm, comforting pho seemed like the perfect option.
pho-dlite-burnaby-vancouver-brentwoodThe restaurant was very clean, new, and spacious. In particular, we awed over the beautiful plate art wall that was behind us. It looks like they glued a bunch of Asian plates into a nice pattern. I can certainly spot some plate patterns that my family and relatives own!
pho-dlite-burnaby-vancouver-brentwood-review-soloP4, Pho Tai, Large, $9.95: There are many different pho combinations to choose from, as with most Vietnamese places. The boyfriend chose p4, which just comes with rare beef. There was a pretty generous amount of rare beef, as well as onions.
pho-dlite-burnaby-vancouver-brentwood-beefP7, Pho Nam Bo Vien, Large, $9.95: I ordered the opposite of the boyfriend, aka all cooked beef – beef balls and beef brisket. As with the other bowl, they were pretty generous on the meat toppings and onions.

The broth itself was comforting and flavourful, not too salty or light. Each of the bowls also came with a HUGE amount of noodles. In retrospect, I should have ordered the small because I did not finish the large bowl, especially with the generous toppings of meat.

Pho D’Lite is a pretty solid pho joint that I would definitely come back to if I was in the area. Service is quick and friendly, while the pho is comforting and comes with generous portions of both noodles and meat.

Stila Stay All Day Lip Liner

November 21, 2016

With the lip challenge, I have also been trying this Stila Stay All Day liner to go with some of the darker lipsticks!

Stila is pretty famous for their Stay All Day line. I am a big fan of their Stay All Day liner, foundation, and bronzer which I have also reviewed. I also have the Stay All Day brow pencil and the illuminating balm which I both love, but I haven’t had a chance to review those.
stila-stay-all-day-liner-caberetThe lip liner comes in a light plastic packaging. It is pretty thin, which means the pencil is even thinner. I’m cursed with broken lipsticks/liners if you saw my previous Stila Stay All Day Matte Lipstick post, so I was extra careful with this thin pencil!
stila-stay-all-day-liner-caberet-2I have the shade cabernet, which is a majestic deep plum red. It reminds me of a nice, dark wine. The pencil is very smooth and glides easily. It is also very pigmented!

Since the pencil is thin, it is very easy to get a nice, precise, clean line.
revlon-berry-drenchedHere is a picture with from the lip challenge, wearing this liner. I think it lines my lines very nicely and makes them look slightly more plumper!
colourpop-lippiestix-dalia-stila-cabernet-linerAnd another picture! I love how clean and precise the line looks, and brings out my cupid’s bow.

After writing this post, I looked it up on Stila’s website and found out their whole lip liner line is based on wine, with other shades such as rose, merlot, zinfandel, and moscato! Cool 🙂

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation

November 17, 2016

I love writing foundation reviews, although I don’t get to write them as often as I would like! The main reason for that being I don’t wear foundation on a daily basis, so I don’t have a large amount to review. I also really love reading foundation reviews!
estee-lauder-foundationIn September, I attended the Estee Lauder media preview and was exposed to many different Estee Lauder foundations. There was also a super pretty foundation bar that showcased many of their foundations!

At the end of the event, attendees were colour matched and sent a foundation of their choice to try out. It was hard for me to pick just one, but eventually I decided on the Double Wear foundation because it has great reviews and I was looking for a medium/full coverage foundation.
estee-lauder-double-wear-stay-in-place-makeup-reviewWhat it says (Taken from Sephora):

  • Estēe Lauder’s Double Wear Makeup delivers flawless, 15-hour staying power, and it is natural-looking for carefree coverage.
  • A lightweight, oil-free, and buildable formula, it doesn’t change color, leaving your makeup looking as fresh as when you first applied it.
  • This product is fragrance-free and non-acnegenic. It has been dermatologist tested.

I didn’t know acnegenic was a thing? But anyways, 15 hours is a pretty bold claim! Let’s see if this foundation is any good.
estee-lauder-double-wear-stay-in-place-makeup-review-ivory-beigeApplication: I was a bit wary of the bottle packaging ever since trying the Covergirl Clean Foundation, which also comes in a glass jar.

For the Covergirl foundation, it was incredibly difficult to get product out. I had to continuously slam the jar very hard on my hand for product to come out. An easier way would have been to just stick a clean q-tip every time, but that’s a bit annoying.

Anyways, I was quite pleased when this foundation came out of the bottle easily, without any banging or frustration. It would be nice to have a pump though.

The foundation applied pretty easily, with a medium-full coverage. A little goes a long way, and it does make your skin look pretty natural. It also felt really lightweight and breathable. At times, I often forgot I was wearing foundation!
estee-lauder-double-wear-stay-in-place-makeup-review-blogWear: Throughout the day, I was expecting the foundation to smudge off. But, I was really surprised at how flawless it was even after 7-8 hours! It did not require a touch up, and my skin gets pretty oily. I removed the foundation at night after ten hours of wear, and it still looked pretty good!

Apart from wanting to let my skin breathe, one of the MAIN reasons I don’t like wearing foundation is because it always smudges on my glasses and I think that’s just disgusting.

I hate taking off my glasses and seeing nasty foundation smudges or residue on it, it just really turns me off from wearing foundation.

But with this foundation, I was pleasantly surprised that it barely left any residue on my glasses! If you’re a daily glasses wearer like me, you will understand my delight.

1

  • Long lasting
  • Light weight, comfortable to wear
  • Medium – full coverage, a little goes a long way
  • Does not smudge off to glasses as much as other foundations
  • Does not look cakey

2

  • Pours out from a glass bottle, making it harder to control the amount that comes out

yay-nay-or-meh

Yay!

I would recommend this if you’re looking for a comfortable and long lasting medium/full coverage foundation. This retails at Sephora for $46 CAD, which is a bit pricey but worth every dollar!
