Jong Ga Korean

May 11, 2016

I have been on the search for new Korean restaurants! Jong Ga was recommended to me by Cinnamon, so Cocoa, Macaroni, and Cheese and I decided to go there for a late lunch one day. It is situated right in Korea town, inside a small strip mall.
JongGa8

It is a pretty small restaurant and seating can be a bit cramped if you’re sitting in the middle. Luckily, we got a small booth on the side. It wasn’t too busy when we went, and service was friendly and welcoming throughout our visit!
JongGa1After ordering, our banchan came. Everything tasted pretty decent and fresh with no complaints. We all liked the potato banchan the most. Cheese ended up putting the leftover sauce from the potato banchan into his rice bowl and said it was the best thing ever.
JongGa2Seafood tofu soup and rice in stone bowl: I was craving something comforting and warm. Korean tofu soup never fails, and this went above and beyond my cravings! The soup bowl was HUGE, I was so uncomfortably stuffed after the meal. There was a generous portion of tofu and assorted seafood in my bowl.

Normally, soup bowls come with a bowl of small rice. Here, you have the option of having a plain steamed rice or rice in a stone pot. The stone pot is very hot so it makes the rice touching the bowl crispy, which is very popular in Asian cooking! Again, the stone pot of rice was HUGE.
JongGa3Beef soup with noodles and rice in stone bowl: Unfortunately, Macaroni was very disappointed in her dish because it lacked flavour. It tasted just like boiled water with some noodles and beef. After adding a tremendous amount of salt, she said it was tolerable.

But I learned that in Korean cooking, salt is usually not added to the whole broth and people add in their own to taste, so that was probably the reason why.
JongGa5Oxtail & beef soup with noodles & rice in stone bowl: This soup was drastically different than the disappointing bowl Macaroni had above! There was a lot of depth to this soup, and was simply delicious.

I kept sneaking in little spoonfuls of this because it was so good. I would definitely order this the next time I come here!
JongGa4Bibimbap: Lastly, Cheese decided to be different and order a rice dish! He really liked his bibimbap and it came with a generous amount of toppings. When he finished his bibimbap and went on to drink the small soup on the side, he said it was very concentrated and tasted like it should have been stirred in the rice.

Clearly we all do not have Korean food enough because none of us knew that. The ‘soup’ was more of a tomato paste, it had a really strong tomato flavour and not much else. We were expecting it to be spicy but it just tasted like concentrated tomato sauce.

—

Overall, the portions at Jong Ga are huge and you will walk out stuffed to the brim (if you have an entree to yourself, that is). The service here is really friendly and quick as well. I am definitely going to be coming back and trying more of their dishes!

Thanks for reading,

Carmen

BVSpa Product Review

May 8, 2016

Bon Vital is a company used primarily by massage therapists, professional spas and salons. However, Bon Vital has just launched their BVSpa by Bon Vital line, which includes spa quality products for consumers to use at home! I recently had the chance to test out a few of their products, and here is what I thought!
BV Spa Bon VitalThe BVSpa products I received were the sugar salt, salt scrub, body lotion, and body butter! I was quite excited to try these products out because they smelled great, even when I just opened the box! As well, pink is one of my favourite colours so that is always a plus. 😉

I will now be reviewing each product in further detail!
BV Spa Bon VitalThe first product I tried was the BVSpa salt scrub, in pomegranate and acai berry. The first thing I noticed was how sweet and fruity it smelled! It reminded me of a fruit candy.

The salt scrub is gentle enough to use everyday. After using this, I could definitely see myself using this daily as it is not too rough or harsh on your skin. I found that the exfoliating salt crystals would melt after cleaning, and would turn into more of a soap. My favourite part of the salt scrub was definitely the fun and fruity scent.
BV Spa Bon VitalWhen I first saw the two scrubs, I was pretty intrigued at what the difference would be as they seemed pretty similar as exfoliants. The sugar scrub came in pink grapefruit, which had a pleasant and strong scent to it!

Compared to the salt scrub, the sugar scrub was noticeably more coarser. I found that both did a great job in exfoliating my skin. My skin felt really smooth, and both left a nice scent on my skin afterwards.
BV Spa Bon VitalAfter using the salt scrub, I followed up with the body butter as they both have the same scent. I really liked the body butter as well! The texture was pretty thick, but fluffy if that makes sense? It reminds me of when we make Asian fluffy angel cake at home, and we have to mix the egg white mixture until it’s fluffy. Sorry, I’m not much of a baker so my description is really bad!

It wasn’t sticky at all and actually felt light on my skin. As well, I liked how fast the body butter absorbed into my skin, leaving no residue.
BV Spa Bon VitalMoving on to the final product! The body lotion came in a sturdy, dispensable pump and has the same grapefruit scent as the sugar scrub.

Again, I liked how light and fast absorbing the body lotion was. It wasn’t thick, which made it faster to apply than the body butter. This product would be great to use if you’re in a rush!
BV Spa Bon VitalHere is a photo of all four swatches, so you can get an idea of the texture. You can definitely see the difference in thickness between the body butter and the body lotion! As for the scrubs, the sugar scrub was coarser, which you can kind of tell in the photo.

Overall, I really enjoyed the BVSpa products. I love the fresh scents, how smooth the scrubs leave my skin, and how quick the lotion absorbs! You can find these BVSpa products at Shoppers Drug Mart for $11.99 each, which is really affordable!

Travel Diary: Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise, New York City

May 5, 2016

I spent almost a week in the concrete jungle, and am now back in Vancouver and ready to share my trip with you all. There was a lot my mom and I wanted to do, so our ‘vacation’ was really fast paced and I ended up doing a tremendous amount of walking there. Far more walking than I would normally do in Vancouver!

There are so many posts I have lined up from my Big Apple visit, but I decided to talk about the Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise first because it was my favourite touristy activity.

Picture from NewYork.com
Picture from NewYork.com

I had the NYC CityPASS, which is a ticket booklet that offers you admission to 6 popular NYC attractions at a discounted price. You can click here for the full CityPASS review.

The Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise was included as one of the activities, and you had the option of choosing which scheduled cruise you wanted. You can go on the NYC CityPASS website for more information on the cruises.

We chose the Harbour Lights Cruise, as we wanted to see the city lit up at night!
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewSince this is the sunset cruise, this scheduled cruise only runs once per day, obviously. The other cruises, such as the Landmark or Liberty Cruises, run twice a day.

The pier where the cruise is located is about a 10 minute walk from Times Square, depending on how fast you walk. You can also take the bus from Times Square.

The weather was a bit muggy but that did not dampen our mood at all! Since it was more of a chillier day, we sat inside the cruise. Pictured above is the outside top deck (there are two floors).
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City Review Once the cruise started to move, people moved inside because it was a windy night and also raining a bit. But on a beautiful, warm day, you will definitely want to be on the balcony!

On Circle Line’s website, you can see the routes in which the ships go, as well as the length of time it runs for. The Harbour Lights cruise was 2 hours and goes around the bottom half of Manhattan, and back around the same way so you don’t have to worry if you are sitting on the side of the boat without the better view.

Now, on to the beautiful views!
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewOn the cruise, we also got to see some attractions on the other side of Manhattan. We passed a port where soldiers were deported to Europe in World War 1 & 2 in New Jersey. We also saw the old Colgate factory in New Jersey. These things we wouldn’t have known if it wasn’t for our informative and engaging tour guide!

Pictured above is the old Pepsi sign, where the factory used to be in Brooklyn!
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewPassing by New York City, with the Empire State Building in the background!
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewWe scored great seats since we went a hour early! The only annoying thing about our seats was that it was directly facing the stairs to the deck. Since the boat was going pretty fast and it was chilly that day, the cold wind blasted up to us whenever people would open the doors. It got a bit annoying because other customers held the door open for their friends, which made our entire area really cold!

Good thing there was an angry customer who went down and told them to not leave the door open as everyone upstairs was starting to freeze. Thank you, haha!
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewGoing under the three bridges that connect Brooklyn and Queens to Manhattan! The tour guide, who was awesome btw, told us an easy way to remember the order of the bridges was BMW – Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg.

This one was either the Manhattan or Williamsburg bridge, sorry, I don’t remember which one exactly.
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewThe sun was beginning to set at 8 pm! Pictured above is the famous Brooklyn Bridge, one of the first steel cable and oldest bridges in North America. We learned that when it was first built, citizens and government officials alike were hesitant to cross the bridge because it was the first time they used steel cable there.

We also learned from the tour guide that the engineer used double the amount of steel cable than necessary. So, you can easily tell the Brooklyn Bridge apart from the other two based on how much more cable and wire it has.
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewI actually didn’t know the Harbour Lights cruise went around the Statue of Liberty, so I was pleasantly surprised when it was announced!

This picture is probably my favourite photo of the trip that I took. Lady Liberty looks so majestic and beautiful lit up like that.
Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise New York City ReviewOn the way back, our side of the boat faced Manhattan so I was able to take nicer city view photos. This is a photo of Lower Manhattan, featuring the World Trade Center building.

Since my mom and I didn’t go on any tours and just explored the city on our own, it was really nice to learn about NYC from an experienced tour guide. Throughout the evening, the tour guide told us fun and interesting facts about the city – hidden facts you wouldn’t really know.

To add to it even more, he had a really great sense of humour and I had a lot of laughs listening to his stories and facts! For me, that’s what made the sightseeing cruise so enjoyable and memorable. I would highly recommend taking this cruise, whether or not it’s your first time to the Big Apple!

Check out the NYC CityPASS for tickets to the Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise!

Cafe Joie

May 3, 2016

Cafe Joie is a little cafe across from Metrotown. I’ve always seen many cute pictures online, so I didn’t pass the opportunity to check it out myself when my friend invited me to come along!

However, I must say that a cafe is probably one of the worst places, food wise, that I can go to. I can’t have caffeine, can’t have dairy, and I don’t have a sweet tooth. That is like 80% of menus at all cafes, but I still go once in awhile to check them out =P

Cafe JoieAlthough it looks pretty small on the outside, it is pretty spacious inside. It got pretty busy throughout our visit, and the line never stopped and tables were mostly full.

Luckily, we scored the only big, round, wooden table at the side of the cafe! It was probably the most comfortable seating in the cafe, as the other tables were pretty cramped together.
Cafe Joie 4They also have cute, bear shape macarons with little ears on them in their display! As well, they have cake slices.
Cafe Joie 2The four of us also got a drink each! Starting from top right, going clockwise:

Green tea latte w/ almond milk: Cinnamon wanted skim milk, but unfortunately they were sold out that day and replaced it with almond milk with no charge. She found it to be really sweet and asked them to make it again without sweetener.

Fancy rooibos tea: Since I can’t have dairy nor caffeine, herbal teas or juices are pretty much  my only drink options at a cafe. The rooibos tea had a strong flavour, and had a fragrant rose smell to it.

London fog: Cocoa had no complaints about her latte!

Nutella latte: This is as good as it sounds. Espresso + velvety milk + nutella! If I could have dairy and caffeine, I would have definitely ordered this as well! Lollipop loved it and described it as drinking warm nutella. Yum!
Cafe Joie 3Green tea waffle, $10.99: Cocoa and Lollipop shared this delicious waffle, topped with green tea ice cream, moci, whipped cream, almonds, kiwi, and strawberry. They both LOVED this waffle and said it was absolutely scrumptious.

I tried a bit of the waffle that didn’t touch the caffeinated green tea or dairy. It was very sweet, soft, and fluffy!

Overall, I would recommend Cafe Joie as a place to study or just hang out with friends. The waffles are definitely worth trying and great for sharing!

Hanwoori Korean Restaurant

May 1, 2016

My apologies for the slight absence on the blog! I am currently in New York City, so I have been quite busy exploring the concrete jungle. I can’t wait to sit down and write about all my food and sightseeing adventures!

—-

Back during Winter Break, a few of us decided to go for Korean food and what we ended 2015 with. Cinnamon had been here before and liked it, so we went ahead and made a reservation. Unfortunately, we didn’t leave that satisfied and were pretty disappointed with our meal.

We were running late for our reservation, but gave them a call for a heads up. We were glad that they still saved the table for us, seeing that there was a big line up at the door. We really appreciated it!
Han1Banchan, free: To start, we received our complimentary Korean appetizers. Nothing too special here, just your average banchan with no complaints.
Han2Ggorigom tang, $14.95: Slow simmered ox tail and bone marrow broth with brisket. I ordered this because I had this at Jong Ga and it was really delicious, and wanted to see it it matched up. Nope, not even close. The broth had no taste, it felt like I was just drinking cloudy water with a chunk of bone and some green onion flavour. There was also barely any brisket inside, I think I managed to find a couple tiny measly pieces.

They also forgot my rice, which they eventually brought after. I’m glad I had the rice to fill me up, otherwise I would have been really hungry with a bowl of cloudy water and flavourless broth. I ended up adding a lot of salt to it, which made the flavour improve. I heard that Korean restaurants tend to leave their broth unflavoured and that each person usually seasons their own bowl to their liking?
Han3Soontofu jigae, $10.95: Continuing on with the disappointment, Cinnamon was shocked when her ‘seafood’ tofu soup arrived with barely any seafood! There were a few pieces of shriveled up seafood, all of which could fit on her small spoon. When she told the staff about this, they brought it back with a couple more pieces of seafood but it was still a very tiny portion. The seafood also did not look fresh at all, judging from how shrunken and shriveled they looked.

Luckily, she had rice and tofu to fill her up!
Han5Yukgaejang, $10.95: Finely shredded beef stew with mushrooms and vegetables in a spicy beef broth. Although Lollipop shouldn’t be eating spicy food, she couldn’t resist! Again, the protein in her bowl was lacking. She didn’t find it super spicy either, and thought that it would have come with more spice.
Han4Seafood pancake, $21.95: This was probably the only decently delicious order that we had of the night. The seafood pancake was filled with a generous amount of seafood, that looked a lot fresher than what the seafood they put in the tofu soup.

At the end of our meal, we were all just full from plain rice and/or noodles. It wasn’t satisfying at all and left our tastebuds wanting more. Judging from the plethora of Korean restaurants in Vancouver, I am not too inclined to try Hanwoori again. I much prefer House of Tofu Soup, Jong Ga, Royal Seoul House… or pretty much any Korean restaurant I’ve tried in Vancouver.

Hanwoori definitely falls to the bottom of the ranking, which is a shame because I’ve heard such good things about this place and it has a good rating on Zomato.
