Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette

November 8, 2016

I did a review on the KVD Shade & Light Contour Quad in August, but I ended up exchanging it for the larger and more popular Shade & Light Eye Contour Palette!

A main reason was that although the quad was cheaper (around $40), the palette was a better investment. The quad only has 1/3 of the shades (but not the same ones as the palette).

I was really excited when I purchased this as it was on my wish list for a long time! I am a huge fan of other KVD products such as the tattoo liner and the liquid lipsticks, so I wanted to see how this one would fare.
kat-von-d-shade-light-eyeThe palette is just made out of cardboard material, that you flip up. However, I don’t find it flimsy so totally okay with me.
kat-von-d-shade-light-eye-swatchHere are the shades included in the palette. There is also a tutorial sheet that comes with the palette, that shows you how to achieve the optimal looks and which shades go well.

But to summarize, the larger shades at the top are the base colours. Under each large shade, there are three shades that fit perfectly under. Those three shades are recommended for that base. Which section do you see yourself wearing the most?!

As you can tell, the colours are pretty neutral and simple, with a matte finish. That was exactly what I was looking for when I bought this, because most of my palettes were shimmery and I wanted something matte!
kat-von-d-shade-light-eye-swatchesHere are the shades swatched. The formula is very soft and gentle, and feels nice on your eyelid. Some shades have more pigment than others, you can’t really see the first and last swatch because it’s pretty light and blends into my arm.

The biggest complaint I have with this palette is that the shades do not last long on my eyes at all. After 3 hours, the eyeshadow is completely gone from my lids!!! With my Milani eye shadow primer, it lasts around 6 hours. I tried using my trusty Urban Decay Primer Potion but the colours did not blend smoothly with this primer on.

I was pretty disappointed from this fact, considering the tattoo liner and liquid lipsticks wear so long.

Since there were so many positive reviews on this palette, I am going against the grain and say that I am not in LOVE LOVE LOVE with this palette as others are. But I do like some parts of it, such as that it contains 100% matte shades and has a soft finish, and will continue to use it.

I was really expecting it to wear longer, especially at such a steep price point. Perhaps my eye lids are too oily, or I need to find a better primer. Any recommendations?
Have you tried this? I’m curious if people thought it wasn’t long lasting like I did.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Pencil

October 5, 2016

It is no surprise that I am a huge Urban Decay fan. I have quite a number of their products, and I absolutely love them all! They also opened up the first Urban Decay freestanding store in Vancouver, which I still have to check out. I am not a big fan of crowds so I figured I would wait a few weeks before going.

I’m currently at school, but I have a break between my classes so I thought I would write my review on this now! I just started a short term, part time job so the next couple of weeks will be dedicated to finishing that project.
urban-decay-247-glide-on-pencilThis Urban Decay 24/7 glide on pencil came in one of the Sephora favourites sets two years ago. I was a bit sad to see that an eyeliner kit wasn’t offered in the Sephora favourites sets this year, but it is understandable as eyeliners aren’t as popular as other products at the moment. But, I am thinking of purchasing the highlighting kit instead!

This is the last product I have tried in that kit, but I really like it so far. I’ve been using this daily in conjunction with my Kat Von D tattoo liner. First, I’ll talk about both shades individually and then review their formula.
urban-decay-247-glide-on-pencil-2On one end of the pencil, is the shade ‘rockstar’. Rockstar is a really unique shade because I still have yet to figure out exactly what colour or shade this is. When I first used this, I thought it was a brown. But, it also has a slight metallic purple tint to it. I guess it depends on the angle, and which type of light you are seeing it from. I think this shade is really, really pretty.

For over seven years now, I’ve been used to using jet black liner shades. Using this shade was one of the few times where I branched away from that, and I really liked it. It gave my eyes a softer look. I’m not a big fan of lining my bottom lash line, because I think it looks too harsh on me.

But when I use a bit of this metallic brown/purple/whatever it is, it looks pretty good!
urban-decay-247-glide-on-pencil-3The other side is your classic, jet black liner in the shade ‘perversion’. Urban Decay also has a line with the same name, you may remember their perversion mascara. I love using this to tightline and line the middle part of my eye, to give it a consistent and thicker look (if that makes any sense, I’m bad at explaining).

Using this is a lot easier to make sure my eyes are lined proportionately, and takes less time! Then, I would use my Kat Von D tattoo liner to wing out the liner, and to clean the look up.
urban-decay-247-glide-on-pencil-4Here is a swatch on both colours. Rockstar looks more like a brown here, but you can kind of see the metallic finish towards the left?

What I love most about both of these is how easy they are to apply. As the name suggests, you can just gently glide this over your lid once. The result is a very pigmented and smooth colour. Rockstar has more of a softer look, while perversion is very jet black. The staying power of these are also amazing. My lids can get oily, but both shades do not smudge the whole day.

In fact, I took the swatch picture above two days ago. I can still see perversion on my hand, even though I’ve washed my hands countless times and showered twice already!

I don’t really have any complaints about the liner. I mean, if I was to be very picky, the pencils are very soft (since they glide on very easily), so perhaps take caution in not pressing that hard. I’ve also dented the liner a couple times when putting the plastic cap on because of how soft it is, but that’s because I’m a klutz.

Once again, Urban Decay has not disappointed. I am a huge fan of these liners and would recommend it for those who are looking for a long lasting, pigmented liner.

Estee Lauder Fall Preview 2016

September 17, 2016

Ah, how I love thee, Estee Lauder. I am back again with a preview of the upcoming Estee Lauder products, this time for the Fall 2016 season!
Estee Lauder Foundation I’ll start off with the Estee Lauder foundation bar, which features five of their different foundations. How pretty is this table? I seriously LOVE it, and the flowers make me so happy.

Four of the foundations pictured here have already been released, but I’ll be talking about the one launching this season below.
Estee Lauder Pressed PowderJust a close up of one of their foundations, because I found this so aesthetically pleasing!
estee-lauder-beauty-blenderOkay, now back to actual information hahaha! This is the Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick. What’s cool about this product is that there is a sponge applicator at the top, as you can see.

Having the sponge applicator, which feels the same as a Beauty Blender, makes it very travel friendly and easy to use. You don’t have to worry about finding a brush or sponge to blend your foundation!

The foundation itself gives a nice warm and radiant glow, while moisturizing your skin. I would say this is a light-medium finish. It also has a nice and clean scent!
estee-lauder-re-nutrivThis is the luxury line for Estee Lauder, Re-Nutriv. We all oooh-ed and ahhh-ed over the scent, texture, and ingredients of these luxury products.

In particular, I really liked the Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Regenerating Youth Serum. It looks really cool and when we tested it on our skin, I liked how there was a little shimmery glow on my hand!
estee-lauder-lipstickHere are the new shades for the Pure Color Envy line! Inside these lipsticks are a new Optical Pearl Blend, which transforms lip shape with a unique prismatic optic blend for amplified lips.

In addition, the lipsticks include an Exclusive Time Release Encapsulated Moisture Complex with Hyaluronic Acid! This basically means that lips are kept moisturized and smooth due to the timed release of the hyaluronic acid.

I really love Estee Lauder lipsticks for their creaminess, pigmentation, and magnetic caps. The lipstick cap snaps nicely together with the magnet and I love playing with it sometimes, hehe. You can really see and feel the quality of their lipsticks, which is why I love them so much!
estee-lauder-modern-muse-rougeThis season comes the Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss! This is a sexy, fierce, and bold take on the previous Modern Muse perfumes. It really does smell sexy, if that makes any sense? LOL.

The scent is best described as fruity, spicy, and woody with woody being the most noticeable. I noticed a fruity scent as first, and then it turns into a more spicy and woody scent.

The notes are: BLACK CHERRY, CARROT SEED, MANDARIN, ROSE CENTIFOLIA, PINK PEPPER, JASMINE ABSOLUTE, VINYL ACCORD, STYRAX, SAFFRON, LABDANUM, VANILLA, and PATCHOULI. (Notes taken from Estee Lauder website).
estee-lauder-aerin-perfumeThe second perfume launching this fall is by AERIN. AERIN is a line created by Estee Lauder’s granddaughter. This is the AERIN Tangier Vanille. As the name suggests, there is a strong vanilla scent, which I found very warm and comforting. Is it strange that I want to describe it as a delicious scent due to the vanilla and chocolate scents that I detected? Haha!

It is named Tangier Vanille because this perfume is created from Morrocan vanilla, one of the finest vanillas in the world, and Tangier is a city in Morroco. It also just sounds very lovely!

Other notes of this floral, amber, sandalwood, and soft musk. As you can tell, it is a wonderful scent for the colder seasons, where we could use some warmth.
estee-lauder-pink-ribbonLast but definitely not least, is the Pink Ribbon collection. The Pink Ribbon Collection is a breast cancer research foundation founded by Estee Lauder. Each of the products in this collection have a pink ribbon to signify that part of the proceeds go towards breast cancer research.

Well, there you have it 🙂 What product did you like most in this preview? Keep an eye out for these products on shelves in the upcoming months!

ACI Fall 2016 Preview

September 2, 2016

I feel as if I haven’t blogged for awhile, although it’s only been a week! As some of you may know already, the past two months were absolutely crazy for me. I finally have the tail end of summer to relax, and I’ve been really trying to savour the sunny days before fall rolls in.

Another year has gone by, and it is time to share with you all the upcoming products from ACI Beauty. ACI is a Canadian beauty distributor, or in super simple terms, they bring products to the shelves of our favourite beauty stores.
Paul & Joe Looney TunesPaul & Joe never fails to impress me with their product designs. Like seriously, who designs their packaging because it is seriously amazing. This season, Paul & Joe have partnered up with Looney Tunes to launch a limited collection set of themed products!

Last fall, the boyfriend and I watched Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, presented by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. I am really loving how companies are coming out with modern ways to invoke nostalgia. (Side note, I really recommend going to the Bugs Bunny at the Symphony if the VSO brings it back! Not sponsored btw)
Paul & Joe blushThese were too cute not to include. Apart from the lipsticks, they also have blush and shadow compacts with the limited edition Looney Tunes sets. Which one is your favourite design?
Paul & Joe catRemember the cat lipsticks I talked about last year? Well, Paul & Joe has launched a new cat blush this season. The cats here are also blush beads. But with a product so cute, I would be really reluctant to use it up.
Cargo CosmeticsCargo is a brand that I’ve seen here and there, but I was able to learn more about it at the event. I am a big fan of palettes, so I am pretty excited to try and test their palettes out!
Korres CreamI raved about my Korres wild rose oil back in May, and have really started to take a liking to this Greek brand. This Fall, they are releasing a few skincare products and a soap bar.

I’ve been using the wild rose day cream & night mask for the past week, the two on the left and right pictured above. So far, it’s been working really well with my skin and leaves it hydrated and plump. I’m going to use it a bit longer before I write the review, but I’ve been really loving it!
Stila HighlighterThis star light, star bright highlighting trio is part of Stila’s holiday collection. Just like their putty foundation that I reviewed last year, the highlighters also have a nice bounce to it.
Stila Liquid LipstickSome liquid lipsticks from Stila! These come in sets of three, but I just put them all together so you can see what colours they offer.
Ceramic GlazeNail polishes from Seche & Ceramic Glaze. Both are companies that I can vouch for. Once I discovered the Seche Vite top coat, there was no going back. Seriously, it’s a phenomenal top coat and I recommend that you try it for yourself if you haven’t already.
Fusion BeautyFusion is a smaller brand that I haven’t tried that much of yet, but so far, I’ve been really liking the browfusion. It is a double ended brow pencil and gel. I love how angled the pencil is, and how easy it is to get a nice shape!

Apart from the browfusion, they seem to specialize in mascaras. Pictured above are their new mascara launches, which I need to try!
St TropezLast but not least, new products from St. Tropez. Self tanning seems pretty intimidating to me, I’ve heard many horror stories of people trying this at home and coming out looking like an orange. Perhaps one day I’ll give it a shot!

However, we were told that the gradual tan mousse (pictured on the right, the white can) is perfect for beginners because the tan builds up slowly!

Press event. Opinions are own.

Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad

August 17, 2016

After a stressful and busy summer, I am so relieved that everything has finally died down. With two weeks to go, I am determined to make the most out of it by relaxing and catching up on blogging. I’ve nearly exhausted all of my backup drafts!

It’s been very hot in Vancouver this weekend. Well, hot for Vancouver that is… and seeing how my house is not equipped with air conditioning, the boyfriend and I were uncomfortably melting away despite the fan working overtime. It was not a pleasant at all.

So, we decided to go to the mall and enjoy some of that sweet A/C! I spent a bit of time in Sephora and spontaneously decided to treat myself after what I’ve been through this summer, and because I haven’t purchased any high end makeup for awhile.
Kat Von D Eye QuadI’ve been looking for a matte shadow palette for awhile, and this one just spoke to me. I was in love at first swatch. The colours were incredibly pigmented, and felt velvety soft on my skin. I am a HUGE fan of the Kat Von D tattoo liner and I also love the everlasting liquid lipstick line, so naturally, it is time to progress into the KVD eye territory!

There are four different quads available. I bought the one in rust, which features brownish red matte shades – exactly what I was looking for! I’ve been really into matte shades lately, but most of my palettes are more on the shimmery side so I am glad I bought this!
Kat Von D Eye Quad 2The top, light pink is the base. The brown is to define, while the orange one is to contour. Lastly, the white one has the slightest shimmer and is used for highlighting. I’ve never contoured my eyes before, so this should be interesting!

I am in love with the reddish/orange shade. I LOVE how pigmented and smooth it goes on!

While the shades go on extremely pigmented, are easy to work with, and have no fallout, my one complaint would be staying power. Now, keep in mind that I have really oily eyelids and I always have to use primer if I want my shadows to stay the whole day. Without primer, the shadow lasted a mere two hours, which was disappointing! But I can’t entirely blame the shadow because my eyelids can get pretty oily.
s1671353-main-Lhero
Even though I love the colours in the quad, I am considering purchasing the shade & light eye palette instead. There are similar colours in here, and a lot more matte shades I can choose from. I can create a lot more eye looks with this palette as well, I feel like the quads are limited because there are only three shades you can work with. We shall see if I end up replacing it with this!

Picture taken from Sephora.com

As I mentioned earlier, I love the quad. As usual, Kat Von D has WOWed me with their products. I have not tried a KVD product that I haven’t liked yet! The pigmentation and feel of the shadows are incredible, but definitely do require a shadow primer if you have oily lids like I do.
