My Makeup Story Tag

November 14, 2014

I have been tagged by the lovely blondebeauty13 to do “my makeup story” tag! I’ve seen this going around the blogosphere for awhile, so here are my two cents on it. Thanks for the tag and keep reading to see who I’m passing this on to.

1- How old were you when you started makeup?
I have been around makeup since I was born, pretty much. There is a professional (well, as professional as Sears photography is haha!) picture of me when I was four years old, on my mom’s lap with noticeable vibrant, deep red nail polish. My mom loves wearing makeup and I guess that’s where it started for me.
I began playing with makeup in Grade 7, so around 12 or 13 years old? That was back in the days of school dances, we would get ready in the school bathroom. Anyone else remember buying things from Claire’s?! I remember receiving an eyeshadow palette from Claire’s, a boutique chain catered especially towards preteen girls. The eyeshadow set was something similar to the one below, but with 6-8 colours only šŸ™‚
claires

2- How did you get into makeup?
I’m not too sure, makeup is something that has always felt natural to me. I don’t wake up everyday dreading putting on makeup, in fact, I really enjoy it. Probably sometime around the first time I started wearing makeup, I began to read a lot of those embarrassing teen magazines that I feel a bit ashamed of now… haha like J-14, M magazine, and Discovery Girls. If anyone read those, please let me know so I feel less embarrassed… Ā I would always go to the library and read magazines like those/novels until the library closed, I was usually the last kid to leave the library. Here’s an issue of J-14 from 2005, back in my prime reading days LOL.. From there, it progressed to Seventeen magazine which I subscribed to for a majority of my high school days. How embarrassing… Why am I admitting to all this publicly…
J-143- What are some of your favourite brands?
Urban Decay is my favourite brand right now, I love all their products. I also like Benefit, Bare Minerals, and Kat Von D. For drugstore products, I like Revlon, Maybelline, ELF, and L’Oreal.

photo 1 (6)

4- What does makeup mean to you?
To me, makeup is really fun and enjoyable. Makeup shouldn’t be a mask that you hide under, but instead, as something that enhances your features. Makeup makes life more colourful (literally, hehe), and brings together a lot of people whether it’s through Youtube, beauty blogs, or just in person.

5- If you could only wear four products on your face, what would they be?
Eyeliner, mascara, liquid foundation, and eyebrow pencil.

6- What is your favourite thing about makeup?
I love how you can change up your look and dress up. I love how makeup has the power to transform your mood and empower you, and gives you confidence. Also, this is a bit stupid but I really appreciate the packaging and marketing of all beauty products. I admire the design and advertisements of the beauty industry, but that’s probably my Communications (in-process) degree talking. I saw this at Sephora the other day and fell in love with the packaging.

7- What do you think about drugstores VS high end?
I like both, but obviously I can’t afford all high end products which is okay. Drugstore products are becoming more and more innovative, and there are a lot of drug store products that work just as well as high end brands. Just because you can’t afford high end makeup, that shouldn’t limit you to not wearing makeup.

8- What is one piece of advice you could give to a beginner?
Practice makes perfect. No one is born knowing how to create the perfect eyeliner wing/cat eye/ eyebrow shape. See the picture below, we all have been there before at some point LOL. Also, always wash your face and remove your makeup before going to bed to prevent bad breakouts and infections! No bueno =(

Winged-liner_RESIZED

9- What is one makeup trend you never understood?
Hmm… this took awhile for me to think about. Heavy lip liner 5-10 shades darker than your actual lip/lip stick. WHY??? Why Britney why? LOL!

britney

10- What do you think of the beauty community on YouTube?
It has transformed the way we view makeup. Great makeup techniques can be taught by the everyday girl, which is very encouraging. It’s so accessible that anyone with an internet connection can learn how to do makeup. I’ve spent many many hours watching beauty videos and vlogs!

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner

November 13, 2014

It feels like a long time since I have written a beauty post… and it has been quite awhile. I’ve been so busy the last month that I haven’t really been able to go out and try new products, which means nothing really to write about. But I finally had time to open my new products and splurge on some new items as well so I’ll be back to more makeup posts. Yay!

To be honest, I haven’t used any Stila products before but have seen them around for quite awhile. The Stila liquid eyeliner came in an eyeliner set, and it was the first one I decided to open because I wanted to try a Stila product. This is the sample size but the full size product retails for about $26 Canadian.

StilaIt’s quite a long name- Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. For simplicity’s sake, I’ll just call it the Stila liquid liner. This shade is the dark brown – chocolate brown. When it comes to liner shades, I much prefer jet black because it’s more noticeable on my eyes. Brown is good if you want a neutral “no makeup makeup” look, but it’s just my preference. Anyways, I decided to try it and see how it looked.

Stila 3The packaging of this liner is pretty sturdy and standard. The eyeliner comes as a felt tip, and application was very easy. The product and colour applied instantly at first contact, and it was very easy to glide along my eyelid in one easy sweep, no corrections were necessary. The application was also very even. I was also expecting a lighter shade of brown, but I actually preferred this colour more. When it dries, I found that the colour was actually a bit darker so it does look black.

Stila 1Now, the important question is… how long did it last? I put this on in the morning, and was out and about for the whole day. Throughout lunch, shopping, and going to a very exciting Canucks game, I am happy to say that the eyeliner did not smudge at all and was in the same condition at the end of the night as it was in the morning. The removal process was also very easy too, it came off with one quick wipe of makeup remover. I am quite happy with this product and am glad that I gave it a try.

Pros:

  • Very easy to apply in one sweep, no mess at all
  • Brush is very easy to use and guide
  • Great lasting power
  • Rich colour
  • Does not smudge

Cons:

  • For this shade specifically, I found it darker after application than it was originally shown (which was a good thing for me since I prefer dark liners)

Estee Lauder Fall/Winter 2014 Media Preview Event (Part 2/2!)

September 16, 2014

As I was mentioning in part 1, I decided to split this post up because it would just be way too long for one post. If you’re just reading this now, these two posts are a review of the Estee Lauder Fall/Winter 2014 Media Preview Event that I went to two weeks ago. I also mentioned in the first post that these two posts will just be a simple overview of the products, as I did not get a chance to try these products well enough to formulate an opinion or review šŸ™‚ However, I was able to bring home many of their already released products as you will see.

photo 3 (1)Out of all the products I was introduced to that day, my favourite would have to be the sculpting foundation brush on the top left, designed exclusively for Estee Lauder. I read about this brush before, but I finally got to see it in real life and hold it! The middle section of the brush is curved, and will effortlessly hug the contours of the face for effortless sculpting and definition. I feel like this brush will definitely be a saviour for beginner contourers like myself. In front of the sculpting brush, is their new perfectionist youth-infusing foundation. It contains their best selling serum, along with advanced ingredients that will create a more “youthful” appearance to the skin. There are microscopic priming beads that instantly fill lines while blurring imperfections- sounds like real life photoshop to me!

Moving on to the top right is Estee Lauder’s new Re-Nutriv Ultra Radiance Foundation. I was drawn to this one because it contains gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, and jade. To add to the elegance, it includes a blend of Gold and South Sea Pearls. These magnificent gemstones and pearls complement each other as they interact with light to create unique, vibrant colours. Unfortunately one small bottle costs $100, but a girl can dream right?

On the bottom left was the Modern Muse perfume, which smelled lovely as well. It is a blend of “sophisticated florals and succulent fruitiness juxtaposed against deep sultry woods”. Wow, I want to be able to write as beautifully as the person who wrote Estee Lauder’s PR book (which I am reading for reference right now cause I forgot what the scent was exactly, haha)
photo 4 (1)At the end of our tour, we were given an option to do the “3 minute mini makeover”, with an Estee Lauder makeup artist. There were four looks that you were able to choose from. As I mentioned in my first post, I am still trying to master the art of contouring so I opted for the contouring option.

photo (2)Here is what I went home with. Thank you so much, Estee Lauder. I was in so much shock, I was definitely not expecting any gifts, let alone this many. I am super ecstatic to try all of these products out and will be doing reviews on them for sure, so keep your eyes peeled.

I am so grateful to be given this opportunity to attend such a great and organized event, thanks to Estee Lauder and the PR team. Everyone working was so kind, welcoming, and talented in what they do.Ā I have a newfound appreciation towards this brand because of this event. Every time I walk by an Estee Lauder booth, I am reminded of the wonderful team of people behind it and I am so grateful and glad that I caught a glimpse of that at the event.

The products in this post were sent to me free of charge from Estee Lauder, and I was not paid to write this post. Everything in this post is my personal opinion and was not altered by the request of the company.Ā

SpookyEyes.com Coloured Contacts Review

September 15, 2014

Disclaimer:Ā These contacts are FDA and ISO approved, and sterile. FDA means that they are approved for use in the States, while ISO is the international health standard institution. The ISO was formed since countries have their different standards of “safe” for many products, so it’s a way to harmonize the requirements for safe contact lenses wear.

I definitely wouldĀ notĀ be reviewing this product if I did not think it was safe, if the site looked questionable, or had any further doubts about putting these into my eyes whatsoever. Rest assured, although these contacts were sent to me on behalf of the company, they are completely safe to wear compared to other contacts and I would never risk the health of my readers or misinform you guys. With that said, I do know that compared to regular contacts, coloured contacts have a higher chance of drying out your eyes. As with all products, be careful and read the ingredients properly, and use your judgement.Ā

——-

Helloooo everyone! Today, I will be reviewing a product that I never wear – coloured contacts! My relationship with contacts, both regular prescription and coloured have not been great, to say the least. That is because my eyes tend to dry out really fast, making wearing contacts uncomfortable if I wear them for long hours.

I have tried many different contact lenses, different contact solutions, etc, which have helped on some days, but for the most part, they are not comfortable for me. Fast forward to the present, I only wear the daily disposable contacts probably 3-4 times a month as I find those are the most moisturizing, comfortable, and convenient.

Anyways, I was contacted by UK based sister companiesĀ DreamEyes.com / SpookyEyes.com to do a review of their coloured contacts. For simplicity’s sake, I will be referring to them as Spooky Eyes. I haven’t worn coloured contacts for over two years, so I figured I could give them a chance again and if it does work out, I can order a pair of Halloween contacts soon! Here’s how it turned out.
photo 3 (2)I was told to select three coloured contacts that I would like, and one of them would be mailed to me. I was quite excited to see which colour I would end up with! My contacts came roughly three weeks later from the UK. I received the colour green sparkle.Ā

I was happy to learn that the contacts are manufactured in South Korea, where coloured contacts are extremely popular with the female population. That fact reassured me as I know from prior knowledge that South Korea makes great quality coloured lenses.
dreameyesHere is a screenshot from the website, and what I received. Compared to the picture online, I feel that the green shade in real life appears a bit softer and lighter, which I actually prefer.

There are many different shades of green, brown, blue, and purple on their website. I’ve always wanted to try green contacts with my Asian skin and brown eyes, and I felt that these weren’t too dramatic or harsh.
photo 1 (3)I did not have any trouble putting these inside my eyes, they were like my standard contact lenses. When I first put these on, I was shocked at how my eyes looked. Although these contacts did not specify that they will enlarge the appearance of your eyes, they definitely will!

I was not used to seeing myself with enlarged pupils, let alone green eyes. This picture was taken in natural sunlight. Luckily, the colour matched my skin and eyes pretty well. If it was the green shade as seen on their website, I don’t think it would have looked as soft. I also liked how there is a bit of sparkle to it as well in the sun.Ā How do they look in your opinion?

Since these contacts are only for cosmetic purposes, I still had to wear my glasses. These two pictures were taken outside as well, I try to use natural sunlight when possible. With my glasses on, I don’t think the green is as noticeable at first glance, but if you look longer, you can definitely tell.
photo 1Oops, I forgot to take a picture of my eyes before the contacts so here is a picture from a previous post, taken in the same spot where I took the picture above. Since I have naturally dark eyes, coloured contacts may not always turn out the way it appears, or it may not show up at all!

I’m glad that I didn’t have this problem with these contacts. I ended up wearing these for a bit over five hours, and had no problem at all with them! I actually forgot that I was wearing them until I got in the shower, and my eyes started to sting a bit when water got in.

They were super comfortable to wear, and remind me of a smooth, gel-like material as opposed to thinner, plasticky feeling contacts.
Pros:

  • Very comfortable to wear, smooth gel-like contacts
  • This specific shade was not too harsh which I preferred
  • Colour will show up even on dark coloured eyes
  • Lasts one year and retails for $28 US
  • Made in S. Korea, a country known for great quality and comfortable coloured lenses
  • Great for cosplay or costumes but the softer looking coloured lenses are good for daily wear too
  • Free shipping!Ā

Cons:

  • Does not currently offer prescription lenses

In conclusion, I am really satisfied with these contacts, as they are really comfortable and I like the colour. They also have a vast assortment of coloured contacts, with all the possibilities imaginable. White out, UV, devil, cat eye, sparkle, anime… they have them all. Here are some I picked out on SpookyEyes:
contacts
Check them out at DreamEyes.com and SpookyEyes.com!

I’m curious, let me know what are your favourite contacts on their site and if you would you consider wearing coloured contacts for fun in the comments!

These contacts were sent to me free of charge from SpookyEyes, and I was not paid to write this post. Everything in this post is my personal opinion and was not altered by the request of the company.Ā

Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara Review

September 8, 2014

The Lancome Hypnose Star mascara came with my Sephora glitz and glam makeup sampler kit last Christmas. To be honest, I haven’t really used it much until now because I have waaayy too many mascaras and I don’t normally wear mascara.

My lashes seem to have a problem with mascara, because no matter how popular, expensive, or fantastic a mascara is, my lashes just won’t behave! No matter the formula, they will almost always clump up and not lengthen or volumize like it’s supposed to.

On a rare occasion however, my lashes DO cooperate with me and my mascara looks wonderful! If you have any idea how to fix this, PLEASE let me know! I’ve tried switching multiple mascaras, trying different eyelash curlers, heating my eyelash curlers… etc. It’s just too much hassle to put on mascara daily when it fails 70% of the time. Anyways, I’ll let the picture of my lashes before and after speak for itself. Keep reading!
photo 3My love for this mascara came suddenly and unexpectedly. I was getting ready to go out, and mindlessly grabbed the first mascara that was within arms reach. To be honest, I had no idea where I got this mascara from until I searched it on the internet, and found out that it was featured in the Sephora glitz and glam set. Oops šŸ™‚
photo 4The mascara wand features a cone tip, which I haven’t seen before. This tip made it easier to reach the shorter lashes.
lancomeThis was after two coats, I’ll let the picture speak for itself! I noticed that my eyelashes looked a lot longer, really well separated, and still natural! Amazing. Compared to the Benefit- They’re real! mascara, I would say they both have similar effects in that it makes your lashes look really natural and long.

I’ve tried to search online what ingredients are in this mascara, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere! Lancome seems to have different variations of their Hynose mascara, but this one was not listed on their site or on Sephora. I’ve come to realize that makeup sampler sets are really the way to go. It’s a lower cost way to discover many new products at once! Plus, they usually come in sample sizes so even if you don’t agree with the product, it’s a small size anyways. I also discovered the Too Faced 3 Way Lashlining Tool in this same bag too. Sephora normally sells their sample sets during the holiday season, so I definitely will be keeping my eyes peeled! It’s so exciting because the products in the sets change every year!
lancome 2Pros:

  • Really great at lengthening lashes
  • Does not clump
  • Cone tip makes it easy to reach the shorter lashes on the side
  • Ideal for dramatic makeup looks or a substitute for falsies (Yep, it’s that good)

Cons

  • Pricey compared to drug store products
  • This exact one is not waterproof, however other mascaras in that line may be

I wish I could tell you guys how much this retails for, but since I got it in a sample kit AND I can’t seem to find the same product online anywhere, I can’t šŸ™ The other mascaras in the Hypnose line range from $30-35, so I assume it will be around there. The sample kit was $50, so you’re already getting a great deal. The Too Faced Lash Liner tool was already almost $30 too. See, more reason to purchase sample sets from Sephora! šŸ˜‰

I hope you guys enjoyed this review and thanks so much for reading! What are your favourite mascaras?

-Carmen
